#202645 — VLC doesn't shutdown when closed

FromGary Dale <garyndp@gmail.com>
Date2018-11-21 02:30 +0100
SubjectVLC doesn't shutdown when closed
Message-ID<wWpv3-88K-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
I'm running Debian/Buster with a Plasma 5 desktop. After I close a VLC
session, the program continues to lurk in the process list until I send
it the Kill signal. This is annoying because VLC stops the screen saver
/ session locker from kicking in while it is active so I have to bring
up the System Activity monitor to check for and kill all the VLC processes.

Note that just ending the process doesn't work. I need to send the Kill
signal.

Not a VLC user here, so take my advice with a fist of salt (or two),
but I think you might want to describe more precisely what you mean
by "close a VLC session" resp. "end the process". You close the
program's main window?

Close - click on the close button, which closes the window and should
also shut down the application

End Process - click on the End Process option in the System Activity
monitor after selecting the VLC process. According the manual, this is
supposed to send the SIGKILL signal but it doesn't seem to work in this
case. Instead I need to send the Kill signal to the process.

Cliff's Notes version > jump down to where I said I might have found
something. :)

The rambling version > More apples and oranges, Thunar file manager
was doing that to me a couple years ago to the point it was still
alive *after reboots*. That's bad. At some point, I stopped noticing
it occurring.

Am writing to ask.. is there a toggle switch anywhere, e.g. in
Preferences, that gives you the option of leaving it running in the
background? I've seen programs do that but can't remember what did.
Some browsers have something along that line, for one thing.

I just installed Samba and noticed a "background" option for it via
its manpages. That wouldn't be something that users necessary knew was
occurring because it was about a command line option in Samba's case.

One of the players I've used had the option to postpone screensavers
until videos finish playing, too. Maybe... well, I don't know. It's
nice when the screensaver does NOT kick in while something's playing.
But if it's a royal pain for whatever reason, maybe untoggling that
might somehow help *if that option exists*.

Might have found something. After I wrote the above, I took a quick
peek at "apt-cache show vlc" before sending this:

"VLC can also be used as a streaming server that duplicates the stream it
reads and multicasts them through the network to other clients, or serves
 them through HTTP."

Maybe that has something to do with it not going gentle into that good
night? That "show me" there even references an additional plugin
package for-r-r-r-r..... backgrounding happy Samba.

I looked for a keep running option (and VLC does have a lot of options)
but couldn't find one.

If in 'Simple Preferences' under 'Playlists and instances' 'use only one
instance when started from file manager' isn't checked the phenomenon
has been known to occur (if you're starting VLC from a file
manager).

If not and on the other hand this appears to be a known bug. How you are
closing the app might be pertinent. 'Ctrl Q' after stopping the video?
Or some other way? Have you experimented in this regard?

I normally start it from Dolphin  and don't have that option checked
because I sometimes need to compare two videos.

I normally just click the close "X" on the top-right. I'm lazy so the
video probably isn't stopped. I haven't experimented with other methods
because I don't consider a media player staying open in the background
to be anything but a bug.

I have tried killall vlc but I note that fails to work, confirming my
suspicion that this is a bug. A properly behaving program should respond
to normal terminate requests.

Interesting - if I press the stop button on the player, vlc terminates
properly.

We live in an imperfect world, though this isn't exactly what you'd call
counter-intuitive, either.

Maybe the VLC people would argue this isn't a bug, as you might be
streaming to your Aunt Tilly in the other bedroom and only want to free
up screen real estate by closing the video's window on the source machine.

That would be equally served by the minimize button.

Moreover I will note that this is a new behaviour. I've been using VLC
for a long time and this behaviour is not normal for it.

Finally, I will note that your example only makes sense if VLC is being
used to stream a video. It doesn't make sense when the stream option
isn't being used.

It /might/ be just you, Gary:

Using VLC here, and closing without stopping video playback, clicking
the close gadget (top right of window) VLC shuts down, and leaves no
trace of having been run. IOW, there's no task left showing in the
activity monitor - in fact, it's entirely possible to watch the monitor
showing VLC shutting down cleanly.

What happens when/if you move the existing config file out of the way?

When I do that, VLC behaves itself. However when I added the faster and
slower buttons to the timeline panel, VLC stopped shutting down again.
If I remove them again, vlc shuts down properly. When I put them back,
it acts up again.

That explains why it doesn't affect me - because I don't have those
buttons added. I have no idea why that should happen.

So, now you know what's causing it, you can check if that's expected
behaviour, even if such behaviour is a recent change (changelog?) and
take things from there.

That's too bizarre to ever be an expected behaviour. It's a bug.

Go to Preferences -> Interface -> Show settings -> All ---> Interface -> Uncheck 'Run as deamon process'.

I checked that setting, began watching a video, then clicked the upper
right-hand 'X' of the latter's graphical window (which I believe is the
OP's customary modus operandi).

I didn't get any zombie or supernumerary process, though; vlc shutdown
cleanly and completely.

If you read the other discussion, the problem seems to be related with
what controls you have added to the interface. If you just use the stock
interface, it works. Adding speed controls creates the issue.

I added the 'faster' and 'slower' speed controls to the time toolbar in
vlc, started a video, stopped it by clicking the upper right-hand X of
the video's graphical window, but failed to reproduce the symptoms
you've described.

The VLC maintainers appear to have finally fixed the problem.

I spoke too soon. I'm still having it.
