#202217 — 100Base-FX (SC) card PCI/PCIe

Good day *,

I am running on my Organic Farm and my Forest into problems with the
lenght (100m) of Ethernet cables and want to use now for this case
Fiber Multimode 1310nm cables.

So what I have is following:

1) Server "Bunker" (19" 16U Rack, 2 Mini-ITX Server, 4G-Router,
   Astra-Internet Switch, currently 8-port D-Link GreenSwitch, UPS)

2) House (30m distance to second D-Link GreenSwitch)
3) Workspace (20m distance, will get maybe an additional D-Link 5-port
   GreenSwitch)
4) (Winter-)Greenhouse (60m distance for Siemens LOGO!)
5) Powerstation (20m distance, Victron Color Control GX, Siemens LOGO!,
requires 2 cable or also an another D-Link 5-port GreenSwitch)

So this can be done with 12m thick Ethernet Earthcables which I get
for under 0,50€/m

6) Panorama IP cam with remote controll installed on my big Windmill
   mast (100Base-TX, 110m distance)

Best option to connect 6)?

7) 1 IP cam (100Base-TX) with Interphone in 50m distance
here I can also use an Ethernet cable and then using a Eternet/Fiber
   switch to connect

and from 7)

8) 2 IP cams (100Base-TX) in 40m distance
9) 2 IP cams (100Base-TX) in 80m distance
10) 2 IP cams (100Base-TX) in 140m distance

In 2020 we plan a Stall (160m distance) for our animals which should
get also an IP cam and an IP based Interphone (SIP?)

In 4-5 years we plan a second House which in a distance of arround
300-350m

For the IP cams I can get very cheap the TP-Link MC100CM on which I
can attach a small temperature controlled heating element (Estonia
can be cold as -40°C on our farm). The LevelOne IEC-4001 would be
nicer, but the price is GRMPF!

Fiber SC cables I can get up to 400m preconfigured, so this is no
problem.

The question is now, how to connect all best together?

The two Mini-ITX Servers have no free PCI/PCEe ports available,
hence only Ethernet direct or the MX100CM is an option

Now I need a Fiber Singel-Mode SC Switch and (maybe) Network Cards
for my Workstations where two have PCI and PCIe slots.

Which 100Base-FX/SC Switch and Card can you recommend?

Note: Since I have NO AC-Power availlable, the Switches MUST HAVE
      external power supplies (5-24V DC)

I found on eBay the Microsens MS453111 very cheap (I can buy some
spare too; however, the Microsens Website <http://www.microsens.cn>
does not more work since some time) but I would probably need in my
"Bunker" a Switch which has 12-16 Eternet ports and 3-4 SC ports.

Also the power consumption does matter because Of the solar- and
windenergy systems

My old 3Com 100Base-FX (PCI) cards have unfortunately only
Singel-Mode hence I need new stuff for my 4 Workstations.

Thanks in advance

do you have a technician available to install the FO connectors? If you want
to do it yourself you need a microscope for FO cable, the tools to grind and
polish the cuts AND practice. To get practice buy many extra connectors and
take your time.

In many parts of the world, having the cables made by a specialist is
fairly cheap, I think terminating your own cables isn't worth doing
unless it's hundreds.

There is a means of getting quite large amounts of power along with
two fibres, but it's fairly expensive: the SMPTE Hybrid cable, widely
used in TV broadcasting. The Neutrik OpticalCON is a cheaper system.

Yep, the OP mentioned that he can get the FO cables made ready-to-use.

Hi Michelle Konzack,
between buildings fibre optics is always the best bet, because of differences
in earth potential and the danger of lightning hits. These do not have to hit
the cables directly. Strong earth currents in the case of a tree being hit or
another building being hit may destroy most of your infrastructure in a wink
of the eye.
So do not only take the cable length into account.
If copper cat6 needs lengths > 90m within a building, additional switches in-
between are an option, maybe with PoIP. But from building to building: always
fibre optic cable. It also eventually may turn out to be cheaper becasue you
need only one kind of switches and can skip the installation of (expensive and
often useless) ground arresters.
I wish you success
Eike

I know.

But my here pros and cons:

                       100Base-TX 100Base-FX SC
                        Ethernet Multi-Mode

1) Lengt =<100m 2km
2) Lightning hits requires ---
                       protection
3) Env.Temperatur -40°C no problem ???
4) Price =< 0,50€/m arround 120€/100m
                                                   configured
5) easy to find switches Most only professional
with external power switches with integrated
                            supply Power supply (230V)

I found the "HP ProCurve 1600M" (16-port. under 100€) and the 4-port
"HP J4112A 100Base-FX Module" (approx. 50€). This would be perfect,
except for the Power Supply.

The question is:

Is it possibel to replace the 230V Power supply by a DC-DC-Inverter?
Recom and Traco have a huge sortiment...

Or use simply my D-Link 5/8-Port GreenSwitches and use a load of
TP-Link MC100CM in my "Server Bunker"? On the other End I could
use the Microsens MS453111 which has 7 Ethernet and one FX ports.

Thanks in advance

Why are you looking at 100FX instead of gigabit? The availability of
gigabit gear is much better, and I'd expect it to end up cheaper.

Because a 8-port Fiber GigaBit Switch cost endless!

We're talking about one fiber run, right? So something like
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=12K-008X-00023 would
suffice, right? How much are you getting the 100fx gear for? If you're
looking at used 100fx equipment then an apples to apples comparison of
used gigabit gear brings the cost down into the $50 range. Add a bit
more for a couple of SFPs, but I still don't understand where the cheap
100FX equipment comes from. The other low cost option would be a pair of
100TX to 100FX media converters.

Am not sure recommending 100FX ; the 1000 Base optics are around the
same price and likely a better bet; your application isn't looking at
throughput, but you do want some of the newer resiliency features on
1000 Base (EAM etc).

Is microwave between buildings not an option - overhanging & line of sight not withstanding.

Microwave is usually ridiculously expensive.

802.11(abcgnhjklq%) is plausible but suffers from a lot of
interference.

Fiber is reasonably cheap, although burying it in conduit or
otherwise can get expensive or laborious.

We have (like in the USA) problems with criminals, using Wifi-Jammer.

> Fiber is reasonably cheap,

Yeah, I found <http://www.fs.com/> which seems VERY cheap even for
customised lenghts of OM3 SC/SC cables.

Gigabit, as someone sugested, would require OM4 cables which are
twice as expensive and also the Networkcards and switches.

I use for my "Serverbunker" a 16-port greenswitch (12V/2A) and for
every fiber cable a TP-Link MC100CM Media Converter. On the other
end I use the Microsense MS453111 which has 7 x RJ45 100Mbit and 1 x
100BaseFX/SC (12V/1A).

I think this should work for all.

Oh, from the Server Bunker to the Portal I can use Fiber, but then
I can use my existing Cat5e Ethernet Earthcable to connect the first
4 IP-Cams and the SIP Interphone where I have not the need for any
protection pipes.

I bought currently 400m protection pipe of 50mm diameter which I am
ongoing to place parallel with the HD-PE pipes and the electric cables.

How much is single-mode fibre? The cheapest single-mode SFPs are
1.25GB/s, and the fibre will handle sixteen 3GB/s signals optically
multiplexed, if not more. I've been out of it for four or five years.

A 100m Earthcabel OM4 for 1 GBit (mimited to 550m) cost around 280€,
while an OM3 Earthcable for 100Base-FX with Duplex SC connectors cost
only 90€.

Also I have 8 Microsense Switches (1x 100Base-FX, 7x 100Base-TX) which
you can get on eBay for less then 30€/piece including shipping.

The TP-Link MC100CM Media Converter (100Base-TX->100Base-FX with
Dupex SC) cost less then 32€/piece (Brandnew with waranty) directly
at TP-Link on eBay or lesser (refurbished) from other sellers. I
got 3 of them in Germany for 47€ including DHL shipping to Estonia.

Need still 3 Media Converters more and maybe 2-3 spare.

Doing this with GBit would cost more then 3000€ in total because of
the very expensive OM4 Earthcabel.

Also a 1GBit Network card cost roughly 140€ in Germany. In Estonia
it is out of question to buy it (200€).

Oh, to isolate the Serverbunker from the IP-Cams, the ALCASA
Elektronik AG offerd me OM3 Earthcable with 8 Fasern (???) and
on each end 4 Duplex SC Connectors, which I can put immediately
into the ground to the Portal of my Farm. This Allow me to install
immediately the first Microsense Switch with the SIP Interphone and
the first IP-Cam plus a Siemns LOGO! 2BA8.

For the IP-Cams on the street corners on the Farm I would then need
only the Duplex SC Adapter and continue with 100-150m Fiber Patchkabel.

Next year I can continue with another 200m Patchcable for the forest
for which I need to slice the street an need an authorisation, but
after the winter this is no problem, because it is only a 8t light
street which is repaired after each winter (do not ask, why estonians
do this)

I hope, I get all prices together in the next days

Thanks in advance

That's not correct; gigabit over this distance would require OM2 at
most, and may even work over FDDI grade fiber (not that I'd run FDDI
grade fiber in 2018). OM4 would be required for 10gbase-sr for the
longest run (and I'd personally go with single mode instead if you think
you might ever want to upgrade past gigabit) but OM3 would suffice for
the shorter runs.

I searched the internet and it shows, that with OM3 and
GigaBit you can have only 150m. 10GBit is limited to 35m.

If you have OM4, then GBit is 550m and 10GBit 150m

OM4 would alow me to increase the 100Base-FX to 2km,
while OM3 allow me up to 550m which is in my range
since my Farm is not bigger except at the End of the
Forest where "Nobody was gone before". ;-)
(I love StarTrek)
Would be a 5 year voyage with heavy djungle equipment.

Have a nice weekend

Where did you find that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-mode_optical_fiber#Comparison
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/interfaces-modules/gigabit-ethernet-gbic-sfp-modules/product_data_sheet0900aecd8033f885.html (look for "SFP Port Cabling Specifications")
http://www.thefoa.org/tech/Linkspec.htm

I feel like you're embarking on this project with some very skewed
expectations.
