#200515 — calibre ebook project?

Subjectcalibre ebook project?
Message-ID<wBjaW-5dI-7@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi folks,
Very very simple question.
Does anyone on this list either contribute to the calibre ebook program
project, or take part in their discussion forum?
I am trying to contact someone with the forum, because I cannot create an
account due to the image verification. even the contact form uses one,
after stating you can contact them if having issues creating an account.
My goal is a human with information.
Feel free to write privately as I doubt other than the program being a
Linux one my question will interest few others.
Thanks,
Karen

ROFL!
ahem...yes I have that link.
However as pointed out in my question, I need a human because creating an
account requires an image verification which I cannot solve. So does
their contact form.
so... the goal is a real functional e-mail address instead.
Oh and before I get more off lists e-mails suggesting paths to work
around the captcha *nothing* you can suggest is an option.
Thanks for the giggle!

Calibre's upstream site is calibre-book.com. The author's personal
website is kovidgoyal.net.

While it's not mandatory, it's best practice for certain well-known
email addresses to be accessible for each domain. Therefore you could
try blasting an email to hostmaster@... webmaster@... and postmaster@...
for each of those domains and hope that at least one of them reaches Mr
Goyal.

His blog actually says to use webmaster@... . In any case, the OP
wanted to contact the forum, not Mr Goyal, I believe.

So, now that you've acquired a satisfactory agent, I will take the
conversation a step further. Evidently, now, it's not so much
that you are unable to use the captcha widget, but that you are
choosing to work around it.

You're up to something. What is your real agenda?

what agenda?
I do not even follow this logic because beyond reaching humans in a
position to assist me in joining a forum that I could not join myself
because their particular human verification processes could not be used
by me...there is no agenda. Why should there be one?

My interpretation is there was a miscommunication moment there. Karen
was saying some kindly folks had written offline as she had originally
suggested. *They*, the kindly folks, had offered her one or more ways
to get around the *inaccessible*/unusable captcha.

If you can not pass the human verification process you must be a robot!

I would welcome the participation of robots on mailing list discussions
who are at least as interesting as the 50th percentile of human
entrants.

Lol!
Oh but if it were only that simple.
The w3c,
www.w3c.org/wai
Provides resources articles, even research on recapture that outlines
some of the many many many reasons why an image verification test to
establish humanity presents problems.
They frown upon the practice, especially as there are other ways to
accomplish the same goal that are both more secure and more inclusive.
But that is an entirely different discussion.

If they knew that you could not see the captcha images (which are
unlikely to have audio descriptions attached), they might realise
that you're not just some spammer looking for a way to avoid captcha.
Unfortunately, we live in an age of bots etc. which makes people
suspicious of motives.

I assume some people have said "get a friend to help you".
Sorry if that isn't an option. I hope Darac's suggestion
achieves more.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons that someone cannot access a
reCAPTCHA. They are inherently inaccessible to people with visability
issues, such as blindness. Please assume good faith of fellow posters.

Fer sure; I'm one of those. My vision is sufficiently impaired
that a) the State of Rhode Island refuses to issue me a driver's
license, and b) every month, to renew a free 'net service, I
submit to the audio option reCaptcha provides.

Everyone gets good faith from me first shot out of the box. The OP
had it, but subsequently it was withdrawn. IMHO the details are of
no consequence. Trust no one. Deny everything. Never talk to the
FBI without your lawyer present.

I'm prepared to move on. Who's with me?

You are entitled to have your own personal policy on good faith for your
own personal communication but this is a public mailing list with a Code
of Conduct that enshrines "assume good faith", if you are not happy with
the rule, please do not post.

If you can't solve the captcha, and you can't work around it, basically,
you're fucked. Something I've said all along. Nobody in a position to
do anything about it (i.e. google) seems to care.

Even worse, google's recaptcha relies on US-centric terminology. Sadly,
many of the images they consider to be of a bus are more like coaches to
some Europeans. Cars are a minefield; Is an SUV a car or not?
Sometimes it seems to be, other times not. It goes on..... :-(

The only way I sought to work around the Captcha was not a work around,
but an effort to reach individuals behind the forum to which I sought
access, i. e.
I would have e-mailed hem directly, but even the contact form uses
recaptcha, even with the service anticipating people might have an issue
creating an account.

Additionally, there are many alternative forms of Captcha, honeypot
fields for example.
Google does not force anyone to use recaptcha over these alternatives.
and searching before using reveals lots of information, for example.

Recaptcha is an issue for those who do not speak English for whom Western
cultural references are meaningless etc. etc.
In the case of the door I sought though they pride themselves on their
opensource roots, which should at least invite thinking outside of the
box.
Lastly, Google can be made to care, there was a terrific piece on the CBS
News program 60 Minutes about Google's abuses and those prepared to make
them care. Recaptcha is just one example of how Google controls markets.

Just as the captcha is to prevent robots from submitting the web page,
so the web page contact form is likely there to avoid releasing
details such as email addresses and telephone numbers. IOW they might
not wish to be contacted in that way. So it's moot to say that you're
not attempting a workaround.

The contact people may also have little control over how their hosting
service sets up verification. Very frustrating, I agree.

Cheers,
David.

To a subset of Europeans quite known to be not at ease with
English, coaches are « cars », just like bread is « pain ». :-)

I thought coaches were charas (pronounced "sharras", (short as)).
"Charabanc" is a bit of a mouthful. The vehicles were used to take
one to Blackpool.

(Note to non-English speakers. Don't drop the word "chara" into
casual conversataion about transport; natural English politeness
will get you a nod of the head but there will be incomprehension
in the mind).
