Hi, Thakur Mahashaya wrote: > Please tell me what is the list of standard utilities in Debian? If this is a trick question: Good one. It makes me think. A standard utility is supposed to be installed often. The popularity of Debian packages is ranked at https://popcon.debian.org/by_inst A package may contain more than one utility (e.g. "coreutils") or none at all (e.g. "libpam-modules"). File lists of binary packages are at https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/"$package_name"/filelist See for example https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/coreutils/filelist https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/libpam-modules/filelist Have a nice day :) Thomas

Me being naturally loopy to begin with, I navigated the treacherous semantic waters of your inquiry with my usual aplomb. I would consider the package 'coreutils,' containing "the basic file, shell and text manipulation utilities which are expected to exist on every operating system," as representing "standard utilities" in a sane and good faith (but perhaps too restrictive) understanding of the phrase. The list of these utilities is short enough to include here: arch base64 basename cat chcon chgrp chmod chown chroot cksum comm cp csplit cut date dd df dir dircolors dirname du echo env expand expr factor false flock fmt fold groups head hostid id install join link ln logname ls md5sum mkdir mkfifo mknod mktemp mv nice nl nohup nproc numfmt od paste pathchk pinky pr printenv printf ptx pwd readlink realpath rm rmdir runcon sha*sum seq shred sleep sort split stat stty sum sync tac tail tee test timeout touch tr true truncate tsort tty uname unexpand uniq unlink users vdir wc who whoami yes I think they live primarily (if not exclusively) in /bin/ and /usr/bin. I note that some of these apps I've never heard of in my life. ptx - produce a permuted index of file contents Produce a permuted index. I wonder if I would want to do that any time soon (I might if I knew what the hell a permuted index was). This page may be of interest to you (the whys of what goes where in the Debian file hierarchy): https://wiki.debian.org/FilesystemHierarchyStandard Having reached this point I believe I've forgotten exactly what your question was to begin with. Packages: standard Section: user Test-new-install: mark skip The standard system utilities task installs the package "standard" But apparently when I try to get details on this package: matthew@matt-tower:~$ apt show standard N: Unable to locate package standard N: Unable to locate package standard E: No packages found So I'm a little confused too. Running tasksel on a running system, and I don't see an option for standard system utilities etiher. Maybe this is a bug in the installer?

Searching the archives isn't. I've been deleting this thread as a likely troll, but I always check your posts. Sorry to attach at random. Anyway, here's where the phrase "standard system utilities" occurs in the debian-installer. As you see, it's what I always install myself before adding the next ~200 packages from a script (plus a heap of fonts). ┌───────────────────────────┤ [!] Software selection ├────────────────────────────┐ │ │ │ At the moment, only the core of the system is installed. I saw everyone else's great responses. Dissecting a debootstrap encounter comes to mind for me. That would give an idea of the extremely base set that is needed/necessary to get the party started (on regular occasion)...
