#194323 — A Problem with Firefox Quantum

From"Stephen P. Molnar" <s.molnar@sbcglobal.net>
Date2018-03-30 18:40 +0200
SubjectA Problem with Firefox Quantum
Message-ID<vz5ei-Yv-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
I am running Debian Stretch on my Linux platform and have a rather
annoying problem.

I have upgraded Firefox to Firefox Quantum, currently v-59.0.2
(64-bit). Unasked for by me every time that I run a search I get 6
search recommendations.

Google has come up with how to remove the pocket, how to remove search
engines, how to remove . . . . but the 'Search Recommendations' persist.

Has anyone figured out how to get rid of the blasted thing? No, I
really don't want to switch browsers.

Thanks in advance.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-suggestions-firefox

Which says:

un-check() the Provide search suggestions box in the Search section
  of Firefox's preferences...

Or are you referring to something else entirely?

Thanks for the suggestions, so far. Unfortunately, that's not the
problem. Checked or not checked the 'Search Recommendations' are still
there.

Here's a solution in search of a problem:

Try:

 about:config

 browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete

Change boolean value to false.

Restart browser.

This preference has been removed apparently (in their perpetual search
to bugger the user up the wazoo with unwanted "features" you need more
than one PhD to turn off).

Maybe something in this reddit thread can be of use:

Sigh. Choice is confusing. Users are idiots.

Were it not Mozilla, I wouldn't care. Sad.

Are you on Linux? For me (on Debian Stretch), with all Firefox versions,
   the field name is

     browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled

and I don't need to restart the browser

Yes, the OS is Debian Stretch. Changing
browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled made no difference.

rather strange. I made an other test just now, and it works perfectly,
and immediatly (i.e without restarting firefox)
PS: and it's not an April fool!

I'm rapidly coming to the solution that my system is a bit to the funky
side. I guess I'll just live with it for the time being.

Changing to "flase" worked on my Openbox window manager-menu-lxpanel
only version of Wheezy Firefox 59.0.2. Ditto in Stretch similarly
configured running in VirtualBox. Both using DuckDuckGo. Search in
both in URL bar didn't work at all if I used Google search engine.

You can also remove unwanted entries under "One-Click Search Engines".
