Greetings,
I am a student, according to me this is a Debian question so I have
asked here. Please let me know if I have asked in the wrong place.
Just to learn, I am trying to install open edx on Debian and I faced this
error.

The error is.

An exception occurred during task execution. To see the full traceback, use
-vvv. The error was: apt.cache.FetchFailedException: E:The repository '
http://ppa.edx.org stretch Release' does not have a Release file.
fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false, "failed": true,
"module_stderr": "Traceback (most recent call last):\n File

raise FetchFailedException(e)\napt.cache.FetchFailedException: E:The
repository 'http://ppa.edx.org stretch Release' does not have a Release
file.\n", "module_stdout": "", "msg": "MODULE FAILURE"}

I tried searching it online but could not find a solution for this. Can
someone help we with this.

Thanks in advance.

[...]

The repository http://ppa.edx.org/ doesn't have a file named "Release".

Actually, it seems to be inaccessible (Release is the first file your
installer tries to access, that's why this error comes up front).

If I try to access the repo from here, I always get "Forbidden".

My guess is that you might need a slightly different URL for your
edx repository.

Cheers

I guess that too -- but unfortunately, I have no idea what
"edx" is. A superficial web search doesn't turn up any
conclusive results for me.

Good luck

As I already said, I don't know even what "edx" is. A cursory
web search didn't make me smarter either.

Is it free software? Is it a product by a company?

I did not know myself either :-)
it's about online learning:
https://open.edx.org/about-open-edx
The poster did not mention what is goal is by trying to install openedx
but from what I gather from the above mentionned website, he does not
need openedx software at all if his sole purpose is to access online
courses (LMS): that may be done with a web browser

And for creating or managing courses: there is a native Ubuntu 16.04
version and a Docker container that is recommended for other linuxes

1) Please, please, please... As Thomas already asked you: answer only to
the Debian user mailing list (or the newsgroup or the web forum,
depending on what you use). Other people might have the same problem as
yours in the future and this thread may help them.

2) What do you mean by "I want to port it to Debian"? There is no
Openedx Ubuntu package: so what you want is adapt the Ubuntu native
install procedure to Debian? or create a Debian package? or just running
Openedx on Debian? or something else?

3) How, precisely, did you try to install Openedx on Debian? Your first
message mentions the transcription of an error message but not the steps
you achieved that caused it.

4) Be warned that my comptetences in porting and packaging tend to zero :-)

I followed this
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/openedx-ops/xYIWpRfIXOs to install
the edx on my machine
.yea the article is old,I thought the procedure for debian9 would be
similar to the one given in the article.
when I run the mainscript. I found the error.

when i comment the line in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa_edx_org.list the
error is rectified.but when I again run the command. the file is created
again and issue remains the same.
I am just trying to learn

I do not know if it is already in production or if it is still in a beta
stage, but open-edx has switched from Vargrant to Docker.

- there is a *native* version of open-edx for Ubuntu 16.04
- there is a older *native* version of open-edx for an older Ubuntu
- *Fullstack* is deprecated from Hawthorn release
- *Devstack* is vitualized or contained (Vargrant before, Docker now)
- *Manual* means you adapt the *native* method to your needs to install
and run on your OS, counting on your abilities because it is not
supported by open-edx nor your OS provider

I suppose this PPA is not used anymore to install native UBUNTU openedx:

https://openedx.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/OpenOPS/pages/146440579/Native+Open+edX+Ubuntu+16.04+64+bit+Installation

However UBUNTU is not Debian and chances are that trying the above
mentionned method to install Openedx on Debian will fail.

It seems the recommended method recommended by Edx to run Openedx
on other Linuxes is inside Docker:
 https://github.com/edx/devstack
