What characters? What is shown? What did you expect?

xterm uses fixed-size bitmap fonts which typically support only limited
character ranges; both xterm and bitmap fonts are considered legacy
technologies and have been replaced since by the development of scalable
fonts and terminals supporting them in the 1990s. Can you use a terminal
that supports scalable fonts? Examples include gnome-terminal and
xfce4-terminal.

If the characters are shown in in Firefox, I expect that you have
installed fonts that support Chinese characters with a command like:

apt-get install fonts-noto

It might also be useful to know your locale. I hope your system and
filesystem are using UTF-8. What is your filesystem type (ext4? vfat?)
and what is its filename encoding?

Kind regards,

XTerm does support scalable fonts.

You could try uxterm. It is provided by the xterm package.

Another method is to install xfonts-efont-unicode and use that font for
xterm. For that purpose, I have these lines in ~/.Xdefaults:

xterm*VT100.foreground: black
xterm*VT100.background: white
xterm*VT100.cursorColor: gray
xterm*VT100.geometry: 85x40
xterm*VT100.font: -efont-fixed-medium-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*

As for the size (16 here) you can choose from 10, 12, 14, 16 and 24.

When you say Firefox shows the characters, do you mean it correctly
shows those file names, or just that you can see somewhere else the
characters used in the filenames?

Maybe some filenames are incorrectly encoded.

It would really help if you showed us what you get, and what you expected.

I really don't know, but this fellow Eric Ma

https://www.systutorials.com/241209/how-to-make-xterm-display-chinese-characters/

has this in his '~/.Xresources' file (amongst other things):

 ! Chinese fonts
 XTerm*faceNameDoublesize: AR PL UMing HK
