Ciao a tutti,

I need to (re)install debian on a compact on intel with graphic board
broken so I would try to install via ssh: are there installation images
prepared for this kind of situation?

This is what would be called a "headless" install.

A naive search based on that produces some unhelpful results, but also
finds this:

https://sowhatisthesolution.wordpress.com/2016/03/13/headless-debian-install-via-ssh/

which appears to be someone's directions for doing exactly what you're
after, only a couple of years old.

I hope that's helpful; if not, possibly there may be more to find with
the additional search term.

i'm not sure i understand your question...

it sounds like you want to do a headless install
and that isn't anything i've had to do yet.

does it have working USB ports?

if so, copy netinst image to USB, change bios to
boot from USB and to turn off graphics card if you
can (no need to detect and load stuff for it if it
doesn't function).

this looks like it would work:

  https://blog.sleeplessbeastie.eu/2015/10/12/how-to-install-debian-remotely/

there may be other issues like making sure the machine
or firewall/router is not blocking access to ports).

if you have troubles it may be easier to pull the disk
from the device and just access it via another machine.
if that is the real issue...

You could try:

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Remote

Basically the D-I has already build in support for ssh, you would need
to configure the network interface... using a preseed file.

Can't an external display be used?

What is the point of this page? As it says

The DebianInstaller/NetworkConsole is really neat. It allows you to
do some really cool stuff- like a completely remote full installation
 of Debian.

It then goes on (to my mind) to convolute the process. "Why?" the page
asks. "Because I can" is the answer. Basically, it does not offer any
advantage over d-i's already built-in support for ssh. I suppose you do
learn something about how to re-master and re-build the installer. But
featuring Legacy GRUB isn't exactly heartening.

And a few other things.

The graphics card is defunct.

I speculate that it is a machine to be used as a headless server, so it would
be an overkill to buy a graphics card just to do initial installation, as you
would never need graphics from that point on.

If this speculation is true, then the simplest solution would be to *borrow* a
graphics card from some machine for initial installation.

Or, if you can get into BIOS settings somehow (in spite of a defunct graph
card?) and if your machine (BIOS) can use an RS232 port for remote console
(server class machines usually do) then you can connect to the broken machine
over telnet / RS-232.

As I don't know what exactly "...with graphic board broken" means (driver
problem? hardware problem? totally or partially broken? if partially, then how
broken? etc.) I can't comment further.

if it was not configured in bios prior the card broke, it is unlikely to be
able to configure it after the card was broken.
what might help here and is not very hard to configure, is to get it done
via nfs boot - you can prepare it with a working computer and then run the
one with the broken card. But again if bios was not configured to run PXE
as boot option, it is unlikely that it will work without a graphic card.

https://wiki.debian.org/PXEBootInstall

In summary I think OP should borrow or buy a second hand graphic card - even
old one would work - there are some really cheep, as you simply need a
command line/text console.

It can also be a good way to manage server farms, where all the machines in
the farm were setup to try booting PXE first, then hard disk, so that any server
can be (re)installed or booted into a special installation (security,
diagnostics, forensics, offline disk imaging,...) without physically attending
to them - which can be a hassle sometimes.

I'm game, primarily since it's available via "main", but it will take
a while between download time and the usual whole flubbing it up a few
times before success. After reading through the first part of its
description, I figured I could test it via virtual machine. Next part
of its description mentions QEMU so there you go....... :)

If it absolutely demands a physical disk to plant itself, I may even
have one of those that works. Optimal for today's World, though, will
be if it offers an option that lets you save something like an ISO
file straight to a hard drive. :)

i always cache downloaded packages just in case i ever
need them for something else. with my connection not
being super fast it does help at times.

the other day was the first day i even looked at qemu
to see if i could use it for doing git bisect for tracking
down some issues. i have to pass for now, but it looks
interesting.
