Hello,
"apt search ufraw" finds nothing but if I search on the debian website,
I find
https://packages.debian.org/buster/ufraw
My question is simply: why does apt not find ufraw where my sources.list
file includes the following line:
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ buster main non-free contrib
? I am quite confused, especially as I can find the .deb file on the
website at the UK ftp server. Any clarification to help my confusion
would be welcome!
thanks,
eric

Sorry, should have made myself more clear. Yes, I'm already at buster.

This does the job! The only thing I had not done previously is
apt-get clean
but for some reason this has fixed things. I'm not sure I understand
why, mind you.
Now time to work on my photos! :-)
Thank you,
eric

In a nutshell:
The 'clean' command will remove what the 'update' command has downloaded.
It looks like in your case your package index files were some how corrupted.
That's why cleaning and updating did the trick! :)
As recommended by the below URL 'apt-get update' is required before
installing/upgrading package(s).
If you go command line I would suggest you to familiorise yourself with
the following commands:
apt-get {clean|autoclean|update|upgrade|dist-upgrade}
https://linux.die.net/man/8/apt-get

Nice to hear that it is working for you.
Do not hesitate to come back if you need more info.

I do use these and have for umpteen years; I only use the command line
as I'm very much old skool, weaned as I was on Unix v7 ;-)!
It's the first time I have encountered such a strange situation. I must
admit, however, that I never use clean/autoclean because I like having
all the old files saved in the archive cache. This has been a lifesaver
at times in the past as tracking testing is sometimes (very
infrequently) harmful...
Anyway, thanks for your help! I've spent the past couple of days
playing with my raw images, a perfect activity given the gloomy rainy
weather we are having in the UK at the moment.
Happy new year!

Which is why the adice to delete only pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin
was given :). As a matter of interest, how do the sizes of those files
compare with what you had previously?
Note that, by default, apt deletes files in archives after downloading
and installing them.

But, if you think about it, do users want to keep all the debs they have downloaded? In some circumstances on some machines I know I do, but, on the whole, updating and upgrading is without regard to future problems. Anyway, snapshot.debian.org is at hand. I'm moved to suggest that apt rather than apt-get is the recommended utility to be advised in debian-user. Fewer keystrokes. :) -- Brian.

Try searching through all files there with grep "^Package:.*ufraw" * -- Brian.

What is the error message? Does 'apt search ....' find anything? How about 'apt show ufraw'? Comment out everything in sources.list and do 'apt update'. There should now be no package information in lists. Delete pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin. Add the single line deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian buster main to sources.list and do 'apt update'. 'apt search ufraw'? (I'd use "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main" but that is probably neither here nor there). -- Brian.
