#187137 — Splitting MP3 files (again)

Fromdeloptes <deloptes@gmail.com>

SubjectSplitting MP3 files (again)
Message-ID<ut09P-8nH-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi all,
I know this topic was discussed quite a few times.

Now I was thinking that someone of you could know how to solve following
problem.

I have some remixes (no silence between tracks). How can I split those
easily?

I need a tool, where I can mark the place in the mp3 file for splitting
(schedule a split or queue a split job or alike) and run the split process,
which in result should produce the mp3 files - preferably in subdirectory
with the same name as the file and prefix number :).

Thanks in advance

Regards

Have you considered Audacity? I use the Mac version myself, and it's available for Linux and WinDoze as well.

Can you add some simple guide/howto setup split points and perform the split
in Audacity.

That would be great

Last time I had a look at Audacity it was like sophisticated audio editor...
and I have not used one since 2001.

thanks in advance - regards

1. Select region to be saved as a separate track
2. Chose "export selected audio" from file menu

You might prefer copying or moving the selected audio into a new audio
track, setting it to "solo" and "export audio" (without "selected")
instead, if you need to do this more often. There are many roads
leading to Rome...

too much work for simple task ... I want to right click and say create split
here. I can not export each single track from 10 mp3 files with 20 tracks
each :(

obviously so far we've not found the shortest way to Rome :)

+1 for Audacity.

BTW, please post your solution when you solve it - especially command
line apps and options.

Good luck,

In this specific case I will not have a script solution. I expect the
application to be able to do this.

I don't have Audacity installed and I wanted to be sure it can do the job
before installing it.

at the moment I use
        mp3splt -t 5.00 -f -a -d XXX yyy.mp3
followed by
        cd XXX

        for i in `ls -1`; do
                 mp3check -e \
                        --fix-headers --fix-crc \
                        --cut-junk-start --cut-junk-end $i;
        done

Last part is to fix the headers and some other things that prevent them
playing on my car audio system

But I want a gui to listen to the stream and set up the points to split
because as you see in my solution it splits at each 5th minute.

I'll look at Audacity next

Thank you

regards

Have you tried mp3split-gtk? Should do exactly that.

I was going to suggest 'mp3splt' myself.

(Note the 'i' from split has split in the package name).

It also appears that the package (both command line and gtk gui) is
missing from Stretch. Why, I dunno. The library and development packages
are there, but the app itself seems to have gone the way of
the 'i' in split.

Yes , see my other post - I have them in stretch - perhaps you don't have
the multimedia in your source.list.

If you're referring to an external repository (Marillat's?) I do not; I
noted simply that mp3splt is not included in Debian Stretch's
repository for whatever reason.

Reading the changelog it seems it was "orphaned" in February, removed
from Stretch, but has since been readopted (exists in testing and
unstable).

AFAIK multimedia was reorganized.

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/multimedia.list
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch main non-free

indeed it is from Marillat

Outch. Right.

It might help adding these to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://debian.ids-services.de/debian-multimedia/ stretch main
deb-src http://debian.ids-services.de/debian-multimedia/ stretch main

(replace "stretch" with "buster" or "testing" if running testing and
maybe find a mirror closer to you)

Actually it is helping so nicely, I completely forgot I had added
"debian-multimedia" to sources.list

I installed now mp3splt-gtk

It looks like it would do exactly what I need, but when I press the play
button, it says "gstreamer error: Internal data stream error"

(22:26:24) Warning: No decoder available for type 'application/x-id3'.
(22:26:24) gstreamer error: Your GStreamer installation is missing a
plug-in.
(22:26:24) gstreamer error: Internal data stream error.

installed the crap gstreamer1.0-plugins-good and it worked as expected.

The only problem left is that it does not produce the splitted file names
from the original file.

It says "description here_part1.mp3"

I don't know if it is the file name itself is a problem. If you have some
other nice advice, it's welcome

thank you all

You can generate somewhat better file names from the preferences or
-much better- you could use a tagging tool like exfalso or easytag to
create metadata and mp3splt will do the naming from these. There's also
an option to generate metadata (i.e. tags) from the filename but I have
never tried that.

Yes thanks, indeed it is using the tag for the name, so in my case I would
write the tag before splitting and mp3splt will create the proper names.

I consider this case as closed.

That's fine. Please send an exhaustive summary of your findings, as well
as a thorough enumeration of the steps you've taken to arrive at same,
to the Linux Debian User authorities in Washington within *10* days
maximum from the effective closing date of your case. Failure to do so
can lead to penalties ranging from fines to prisons terms, or both.

Thank you for using Linux Debian User.

I'll try the GUI, though I prefer not installing packages just for
testing ... perhaps a VM will server.

As for the mp3splt - as said before I use it, but I have to enter manually
the time point to plit, which I expect to be possible to do in a gui, by
simply doing a mouse click and selecting schedule split here or similar.

I don't want to type each time point somewhere manually - I'll get old until
I'm done :)

thank and regards
