Hi all, On my home desktop, I'm running Debian on the testing channel (currently at "buster"). A recent apt-get upgrade appears to have broken or removed a few vital virtualbox packages, including virtualbox-dkms. Launching any VM in virtualbox throws this error message: [error] The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root. where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT. [/error] Running modprobe as the error message suggests, though, gives me: modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found in directory /lib/modules/4.11.0-1-amd64 Current I'm running the 4.11.0-1-amd64 kernel, but can easily boot and run a 4.9 kernel (which is the last good working kernel I have). apt-cache search on my desktop doesn't bring up results for any virtualbox package, except for 'virtualbox-guest-additions-iso'. Is there a reason why virtualbox hasn't migrated into stretch or buster yet? While only a minor inconvenience of having to boot with another kernel, I would like to have the newer packages available for a consistent upgrade. Thanks, all. --Robert -- Nobody's ever lost in life...they're merely taking the scenic route. ============================== Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments. Sorry, I just forgot about Oracle policy terms. Yes, you are right and I am wrong. Yes it is true the official Debian repo won't contain Virtualbox again until Oracle make changes they will most likely never make. But, you can get VirtualBox to work just fine on post-Jessie Debian by adding the following to your sources.list or sources.list.d: deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian stretch contrib (Obviously you wouldn't use stretch, I am on stretch so that is what I use) then apt update and bob will be your uncle, and fanny will be your aunt. Works fine on this end. Also, I put it in a separate file in the sources.list.d but I don't know if that matters? I use virtualbox for development and testing, so for me it's a must-have. A friend of mine recently moved from hardware servers to Debian Stretch + VirtualBox (I told him how to use the virtualbox.org repo as I too discovered it wasn't in the Debian repo). I always used the Oracle repo anyway because it was updated more frequently. But I do wish that something could be worked out so that it would be back in Debian.

I need something that will allow me to share a directory between host and virtual machine, and to be able to go between both quickly (I don't have a dual-screen system - no room where I live for that). If I could find something that would work I'd switch, I think. As for my friend, he would need far more features I guess (I don't know what though).

You can use it with GUI friendly virt-manager, or from command line. And switching between host and guest is switching between windows. As for shared directory, NFS?

I must note that it features hardware acceleration (KVM used to be a fork of QEMU to implement this feature but it was merged back). Moreover, you can use SPICE <https://www.spice-space.org/> to display the guest windows as individual windows in the host. Regards.

I forgot something: As for sharing directories between guest and host, this can be accomplished using the same means that one would use to share a directory or files between machines in he same local network. I use sftp. I think that QEMU has a feature to make available content from the guest to the host as a SMB directory, but I have never used it.

The shared directory has to be a directory on the host (ie. ext4 is what I'm using). VirtualBox lets me share as many directories as I like and lets me specify which ones. I think I tried qemu and kvm and didn't even know how to use it or where to begin. I might have to revisit that sometime especially if I get tired of VirtualBox.

I might have to revisit that sometime especially > if I get tired of VirtualBox. > Hmm, I was curious to see if it can be done with qemu-kvm. It can and is not really hard. At least not with virt-manager, did not check on command line. Anyway, just as a note if you decide to use it. Once you make and open your VM, go to view, details, add hardware button, file system, select folder for source ( like /home/something on your host ), select folder for destination ( something on your guest like example ), then mount that example where you want on your guest. You just need to get right mount command, this is from qemu wiki: mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio [mount tag] [mount point] -oversion=9p2000.L Here is that page for further reading: http://wiki.qemu.org/Documentation/9psetup And here is with bit less reading and illustrated from kvm: http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/9p_virtio Personally, I do not have use for shared files between host and guest, but hope that this can help you.

Virtualbox has shared folders (directory) as well as shared Clipboard. You just need to install Guest Additions in the Guest OS to enable it. I use both all the time. VB has a lot of other features. Just read the manual. B

I have never used it, so I do not know how it works with practice, I think that connecting to QEMU using SPICE (instead of SSH or VNC) gives a shared clipboard among many other convenience features. Refer to the QEMU manual for details. Regards.

Never cared much for QEMU or kvm, but that was years ago. Maybe, they're easier to set up and use now.. B

QEMU has been well documented for as long as I have cared to read its documentation, which is at least 5 years. Of course, anything but the most basic software is hard to “set up and use” if you do not read he manual.

I started investigating emulators and VMs 10 or so years ago as an alternative to mulitbooting for testing and evaluating various Linux distros. Ultimately that investigation lead to my choosing Virtualbox. Been using it ever since. B

Of course, anything but the > most basic software is hard to “set up and use” if you do not read he > manual. Which TUI/GUI do you use? I've been struggling to create a Host-only network. In VirtualBox (and VMWare from version 1 or very early) I could basically just tick a check box for "Host only network", and name one or more shared folders. I realise I probably have to mount the SAMBA horse again. And for libre software, I'm willing to do all this. My most recent trial was just pre-Debian 9.0 - I could not get the dual monitor setup working properly (SPICE) - the mouse was the deal breaker, just repeating over the first "virtual monitor"'s window, and having traversed it the second time (left to right), would pop out the RHS of the RHS virtual monitor window. Last night I had the thought that perhaps I can just stretch the first window the full width of my two monitors (and rotate my portrait monitor back to landscape, so that I can use all my real estate. I'm pretty sure I could get everything working properly yet - it just takes the time, and in the mean time my life has caught up with me again, and so again I'm VM-less since Virtualbox stopped working quite a few months ago (forget why - it didn't get updated for a while to match some debian kernel or something - this might have been Oracle virtualbox, I don't recall sorry...)

The easiest way to do this in QEMU is to use the “-net user,restrict=on,hostfwd=...” option. The hostfwd part is optional, but you will require if you want host–guest network connectivity. This way, networking is handled in user space. A more efficient approach is to use kernel-managed networking. It is my understanding that for this, one may use the TUN and TAP virtual Linux devices, but I have never done it. >I realise I probably have to mount the SAMBA horse again. And for >libre software, I'm willing to do all this. Why do you want to use SAMBA? Install a SSH server in the guest and access it from the host using scp, sftp or rsync. Rsync is the most efficient.
