#189008 — No Sound

SubjectNo Sound
Message-ID<uMcDw-6Cy-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
I just installed an Asus Xonar DSX pcie card. Alsamixer recognizes it
and PulseAudio Volume Control show a strong signal level during playback
but no sound from the speakers. The system works with the onboard Nvidia
sound, no problems.

I assume the problem is a missing linux driver for the Xonar but I have
seen claims that Xonar works out of the box on linux systems.

Does anyone have this working?

I am using Debian Stretch.

if pulse shows signal, then it might be working, did you check the mute
thing - this is error #1 in such cases. error #2 select the correct output,
I hope you've plugged at the right place I mean line out and not mic

From a terminal run alsamixer, f6, select Xonar DSX

On another terminal cd to a directory of ogg files, start a playback of
a file.

Oh the desktop start pulse audio volume control. Monitor shows strong
active playback levels

Switch to terminal running alsamixer, mute master front which mutes all
output channels.

Return to desktop pulse audio volume control, monitor continues to show
strong active playback levels even though alsamixer thinks all output
channels muted!

The music goes down and around and comes out nowhere!

A lot of folks (myself included) manage just fine without
pulseaudio. ALSA is already complicated and capable enough for them.
Some sophisticated users route pulseaudio through JACK, so
that the pulseaudio daemon doesn't grab exclusive use of the ALSA device.

Good luck!

please try all of this using pamixer, pulseaudio is controled by its own
mixer software not by alsamixer. Remember pulseaudio when installed
manages alsa and not the other way around.

I tried pavucontrol but still no sound.

I concluded there must be a conflict between also and pulseaudio so I
purged pulseaudio. This did not help.

I switched the line out cable to the onboard sound card. With alsamixer
set to the onboard sound card there sound and the volume can be
controlled with the master/front control.

With the line out cable connected to the xonar card and the alsamixer
set to the xonar card there is no sound. With pulseaudio purged there is
no signal monitor but before its deletion pavucontrol showed the xonar
connection and its signal monitor showed a strong signal.

Conclusion: Alsamixer shows volume settings for each sound card but does
not switch to the output stream of the card, this remains the stream
from the onboard  audio regardless of the alsamixer sound card selection.

There must be another setting switch the output stream.

I also wish alsa had a signal strength monitor. Maybe I should reinstall
pulseaudio.

This is not a bad idea as pulseaudio is designed to work on top of alsa and
to make life easier.

In pulseaudio you can control your input and output, perhaps it is worth
looking in all tabs and selecting the appropriate input. In some cases the
fallback must be active (icon on the right pressed)

There are also ways to show level indication in alsa, but this is another
topic.

We asked you to control if channels in alsamixer are muted, you did not
report on that

The channels in alsamixer are not muted. All show MM and I have used the
m key to turn them off and back on to be sure.

I will reinstall pulseaudio and try to select the appropriate input. I
thought there might be a setting in ogg123 to select the sound card to
use but the man page directed me to /etc/libao.conf. which contains two
lines:

default_driver=alsa

quiet

Is there another setting other than quiet? But this can't be the
problem. ogg123 file.ogg plays file when the line out cable is connected
to the onboard sound card.

no this "quite" is related to output information from the process - like
debugging or verbosity.

the sound is managed by the driver
app -> sound library (alsa) -> driver (kernel) -> hardware

pulse sits between app and alsa - if you see indication in pulseaudio but no
sound, then the stream is not routed properly to the speaker - might be a
driver problem.
What you can do is check the kernel Documentation for that driver/sound card
you have.

Here some examples in linux-4.12.10/Documentation/sound/cards/
audigy-mixer.rst bt87x.rst emu10k1-jack.rst img-spdif-in.rst

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Codec: Intel CougarPoint HDMI

./hd-audio/models.rst:Conexant 5051
./hd-audio/models.rst:Conexant 5066
./hd-audio/controls.rst:Conexant codecs

The other approach would be - identify your codec and google linux+codec

it might be you need to provide some additional parameter to the kernel
driver. I recall one the HDMI was listed first and thus output went to HDMI
and not the standard sound system

Ok, my mistake, I thought MM meant click on M to mute

That corrected but now no sound even from the onboard soundcard.

Everything looks like it should work. Pulseaudio volume control/Output
Devices shows three devices: HDMI, the DSX sound care with port
headphones and the Built-in Audio Analoy Stereo with port Line Out. It
knows when the Line Out is plugged  in.

The Pulseaudio volume control/Playback only shows Alsa plug-in[ogg123]:
ALSA Playback on xxxxx where xxxxx is one of the output devices.
Clicking on xxxxx shows the three devices and allows an one to be
selected. Below this is a line with a slider to set the volume and below
this an audio strength signal. These two lines are the same regardless
of the device selection and regardless of the device selection the
volume slider will change the volume of the audio strength signal. The
alsamixer volume setting have no effect on the audio strength signal.

In short alsamixer device selection and volume settings have no effect
on the audio signal strength shown in pulseaudio volume control.

pulseaudio volume control works the same regardless of device selection.

There is no sound from the connected speakers.

It may help if you do rm -fr .config/pulseaudio in your user directory
and also in your root directory then reboot your system. This operation
should force pulseaudio into a known state which for it will be unknown
and pulseaudio would then have to go and do device detection with a
clean slate (no preconcieved notions) of what's on your system. At this
point you may find it useful to subscribe to
pulseaudio-discuss@freedesktop.org if this operation gets you no help.
One thing to try before erasing pulseaudio configuration from your
system's accounts is running the speakertest command in all accounts
then repeat the speakertest once pulseaudio command starts up after you
reboot or maybe better yet power down then restart your system. For my
equipment, pulseaudio has to be working at all times otherwise no screen
reader will speak and the computers on this end become paperweights and
I have had problems with pulseaudio in the past too.

Pulse rests on top of ALSA. If ALSA not workee then Pulse doesn't stand
a chance.

I would like to try this but there is no pamixer. apropos pulseaudio
shows many pa... commands but no pamixer. apt-cache search pamixer
returns a blank line.

I thought debian had the pamixer command. Archlinux has this one and I
think it may be something you can download and build from GitHub -
cdemoulins/pamixer: Pulseaudio command line mixer
