Hi,

Jamie White wrote:

I am very sure that the protest raising people are _not_ subscribed
to debian-user@lists.debian.org . If they are real at all, then they
got spam with our list as fake sender or as fake receiver of replies.

If ever, then this is the story to tell the senders.
(Or maybe a hint to look for malware on their computers.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder about the motivation behind that recent spam annoyance.

Not that i would dislike modern french poetry. I don't get the fun in
the dutch stuffi, though. Generally it would help the archives if that
spam could be dropped on the first hand.

If the senders are real, then they got our mailing list address from
fake headers in the mails to which they reply. After all we do not
see the alleged original messages on our list.

But the "leave me alone" mails mostly look as fake as those original
messages. (Can real people be that stupid ? Is this the proof for
brain damage caused by mobile phones ?)

I see two common patterns:

Many of the spams bear links to "http://bit.ly/" or "http://bitly.com".

Many of them reveal by what kind of device the mobile victim replied
or is pretented to have replied:
"Sent from my Wiko RAINBOW UP 4G"
"Envoyé à partir de mon Windows Phone" (aka Doppeldeppendevice)
"Envoyé depuis mon appareil mobile Samsung"
"Verstuurd vanaf mijn iPad"
"Verzonden vanaf mijn Huawei mobiele telefoon"
"Verzonden vanaf mijn Samsung Galaxy-smartphone."
"Envoyer de Huawei Y360"
"Envoyé depuis un mobile Samsung"
"Envoyé depuis mon smartphone Samsung Galaxy."
"Verstuurd vanaf mijn iPhone"

Maybe our list's spam filter could give such phrases a spam rating
sufficent to drop them if the sender is not subscribed ?

Have a nice day :)

That's my hunch, too. Either someone has managed to force-subscribe
them to the list (how? they must somehow control their mail address,
or they have found a gap in Debian's ML manager), or the senders
are fake. But then... *what* are they doing?

Me too :-/

(1) they can. (2) perhaps.

By experience, such patterns don't persist for long enough to be
worth the hassle of piling up yet another rule which quickly becomes
obsolete. But if it persists...

Strange.

Look at how many people are NOT protesting the G20, or
the earth's summit of earth destroyers. This is how bad this
epidemic of IQ drainage has gotten. It is all sucked through
FB and chasing pokemen.

How about an image file send with every subscription with a 18 digit
random code you would have to type manually to activate? Then use
something like an encryption key to post to the list, so fake headers
get blocked.

> Have a nice day :)

What is even worse than smart-phoniasis is protesting in Hamburg
with your digital identifying device in your pocket and wearing a hood.
That scores lower in IQ than Trump.
Have a great night

Hi,

The messages don't have "LDOSUBSCRIBER" in their "X-Spam-Status:"
headers. This indicates that the sender's mail address is not
subscribed. The sender as person might be subscribed by a different
address or might get forwarded messages which the list sends to
a subscribed address.

But then why don't we ever see the original messages to which
the alleged repliers raise protest ?

I wonder whether smartphone mail apps have a "Smack Sender" button,
which would explain the shallow-minded replies.

The mails already aren't very far from reaching the threshold:
  X-Spam-Status: No, score=2.3 required=4.0 tests=DKIM_SIGNED,DKIM_VALID,
    DKIM_VALID_AU,DKIM_VERIFIED,FORGED_MUA_MOZILLA,HTML_MESSAGE,
    RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE autolearn=no autolearn_force=no version=3.4.0
compared to yours:
  X-Spam-Status: No, score=-16.0 required=4.0 tests=FVGT_m_MULTI_ODD,
    LDOSUBSCRIBER,LDO_WHITELIST,PGPSIGNATURE,RP_MATCHES_RCVD
    autolearn=unavailable autolearn_force=no version=3.4.0

It's an intelligence test. You pass if you do anything more useful
than standing near a few love parades and the expectable hooligan-police
brawl while the big shots are yawning in a ridiculously overdesigned
concert hall.

Yep. Der Schwarze Block and our police leadership deserve each other.
Like Bob (http://monstersvsaliens.wikia.com/wiki/B.O.B.) they would
be dangerous if they had a brain.

> How about an image file send with every subscription with a 18 digit

Doesn't this list send confirmation requests with a long random
URL and/or mail reply code as answer on subscription requests ?
But whatever, as said, the repliers are not subscribed and the alleged
original messages are not spread by our mailing list.

Have a nice day :)

Because they do not exist, of course. These messages are the spam,
themselves. The pretend "leave me alone" prologue is just to disguise
that status and attract your attention until you read the quoted text.

The messages without spammy content in the quoted text are probably
decoys to confuse the automated or mental filters even more.

I think it is far more likely that these people are responding to
spam that has been sent to them with the list's address as the from
address. The recipients do not know or care that the from address of
an email is not trustworthy¹, nor that they should not respond to
spam, so they just reply to express their anger.

I further hypothesise that this is not actually targeted behaviour
to inconvenience the mailing list specifically. I suspect that
massive lists of real email addresses have been harvested from
public mailing list archives and compromised address books etc and
these are used as from addresses on a random basis. Though it would
have to be one address per spam run rather than a different address
for each individual email, as these seem to come in bursts.

The spammers' motivation is to use an address that is not associated
with them but is a real address so cannot be easily blocked on the
basis of from address alone.

I don't think they care who receives the blowback.

Cheers,
Andy

Just for sports i bet on the intention to annoy us and possibly the
reflector mailers.
(I am still undecided whether the reflectors are real.)

I am subscribed to several lists. Among them only debian-user gets
this special kind of spam. Do we have a dedicated enemy ?

Damn. So close and still not enough:

  X-Spam-Status: No, score=3.8 required=4.0 tests=FREEMAIL_FROM,GENDER,
      HTML_MESSAGE,RCVD_IN_DNSWL_LOW,

I wonder how many of these got caught with scores above 4.0 already.

Have a nice day :)

I regularly bounce those to report-listspam@lists.debian.org. Perhaps
the filters get trained on those...

I remember 2 months ago I had received a response from what appeared
as a list member responding to some spam that was sent by me to the list.
The response was something like
>
>
what?
So I fell for it and responded to this and the list telling everyone I had not
sent such email, or it didn't really come from my system. People were
asking me for headers where all I got was a message of the fake response
with minimal headers.
Maybe at the time they were fishing for how the mailist worked. But this
conversation has gone viral itself.

Not just a real address, but an address belonging to a popular mailing
list. If eg. gmail started seeing lots of spammy emails with an email of
jdoe@example.com, that email address itself could become a spam
indicator (even if that was a real email). However, it receives enough
legitimate debian-user traffic to dwarf it. And even if moved the
classification of messages with this address into spam, actual
subscribers would vote in the opposite direction.
So this seems a pretty smart move, unless the recipient spam filters
also take into account that only the spammy ones don't come from
bendel.debian.org

PS: Why don't {lists.,}debian.org have spf records?

Kind regards

The "stop your mail" and "PLEASE STOP YOUR MAILS" messages are
definitely not created by the owners of the email, though it might be
done by a mobile app as suggested.

The proof of this is that they all have nearly the exact same content
(some add the list mail, some don't), all being HTML messages formatted
the same way.

To be noted that the last two the list received are from email users of
Orange France, thus most likely French, and that it is clear from the
wording of those messages that they very unlikely to have been written
by a French person.

The source of those emails also clearly show that they are not sent by a
traditional mailer, but most likely by a java-written automated program
on windows, as seen in the message id, which for this last one was

773946604.1112.1499496543913.JavaMail.www@wwinf1f28

In this we can see that the system user sending this mail with JavaMail
is “www” and that the server sending the message is name “wwinf1f28”.
The previous mail of such type (PLEASE STOP YOUR MAILS) was sent by the
exact same server, with the following message id:

1662938282.1128.1499496664949.JavaMail.www@wwinf1f28

We can thus definitely conclude that those requests to unsubscribe are

true purpose are.

I've replied off-list to some of them to explain what (I think) is
happening and they carry on conversation exactly as if they are very
confused humans who just want the spam to stop.

I've also had my own email address used as the from address of
similar spam, thus forcing me to receive hundreds of "STOP THE MAIL"
responses that look similar to these. At that time I came up with a
boilerplate explanatory email to send back to these complainants,
and any replies I got seemed similarly human-generated.

It may come as a shock to you but most non-technical email users use
HTML email.

That is simply a Java mail-sending library, so could very well be a
mobile email app. Lots of normal people read and respond to email on
their phones.

I'm sorry but I don't think we can definitely conclude that. For me
the simplest explanation is merely that spam runs are taking place
with random addresses of real people and mailing lists used as the
from address. It is something I have seen happen for going on 2
decades now, and had happen to me from time to time (as in, my
addresses were used as the from address).

I have no need to concoct scenarios where the list is being
deliberately targeted in order to explain the behaviour we see.
Spammers generally send a lot of email and are not interested in
responding to any replies they get. They just want people to click
on links.

But if one were to believe that it is some sort of attack, there
isn't very much that one could do about it anyway, aside from
completely ignoring all of those emails. There's no real downside in
ignoring them so I'm not going to get worked up about people taking
it so personally!

Cheers,
Andy

"Any sufficiently siloed user is indistinguishable from a bot"
(I hope Arthur C. Clarke has a lenient eye on this variant)

If the vast majority of junk comes from wanadoo.fr I am tempted to
think that it is a targeted effort to accumulate so many spam reports
for such email addresses that eventually the whole domain is considered
a spamers domain. Huge ISPs have been listed as spam sources this
way. To use an html template that matches the webmail's provider
is the least of problems bot admins face in their escapades.

As long as they don't do it *here* (or any other unix-oriented mailing
list), no problem.

You are shifting topics and making up rules of your own to impose on
others. That's very un-unix like. Why don't you do this in your apple
mailing lists?

Here, amongst the rules, are:

Wrap your lines at 80 characters or less for ordinary
discussion. Lines longer than 80 characters are acceptable for
computer-generated output (e.g., ls -l).

Never send your messages in HTML; use plain text instead.

Cheers,
David.
