I thought it would be nice to see if I could sync my iPad with my Jessie
box. I downloaded all the packages that online research suggested I would
need:

apt-get install ideviceinstaller python-imobiledevice
libimobiledevice-utils libimobiledevice4 libplist2 python-plist ifuse

However, the ifuse package was not found in the Jessie repository. Checking
the Debian Wiki. it lools like ifuse is indeed not in the repository:

Package ifuse

   - wheezy (oldstable) <https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/ifuse> (utils):
   FUSE module for iPhone and iPod Touch devices
   1.0.0-1+b1: amd64 armel i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
   1.0.0-1: armhf s390x
   - stretch (testing) <https://packages.debian.org/stretch/ifuse> (utils):
   FUSE module for iPhone and iPod Touch devices
   1.1.2-0.1+b4: amd64 armel armhf i386 mips mipsel s390x
   1.1.2-0.1+b2: arm64 ppc64el
   1.1.2-0.1+b1: mips64el
   - sid (unstable) <https://packages.debian.org/sid/ifuse> (utils): FUSE
   module for iPhone and iPod Touch devices
   1.1.2-0.1+b5 [*debports* <http://www.debian-ports.org/>]: ppc64
   1.1.2-0.1+b4: alpha amd64 armel armhf i386 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386
   mips mipsel powerpc s390x
   1.1.2-0.1+b2: arm64 ppc64el sparc64
   1.1.2-0.1+b1 [*debports* <http://www.debian-ports.org/>]: hppa m68k
   mips64el x32
   1.1.2-0.1 [*debports* <http://www.debian-ports.org/>]: powerpcspe sh4

So, it is in Wheezy, and Stretch, but not Jessie? This leads me to suspect
it has issues, probably dependency ones, like an updated dependency package
not making the freeze cutoff. And I am not one to go willy-nilly upgrading
random dependency files to get one package, however much I want ifuse.

Can anybody add any actual fact to my suppositions?

if you download
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/i/ifuse/ifuse_1.1.2-0.1+b4_amd64.deb
and try to install it with dpkg -i, the package manager will list you
the missing dependencies:

Preparing to unpack .../ifuse_1.1.2-0.1+b4_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking ifuse (1.1.2-0.1+b4) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of ifuse:
 ifuse depends on libimobiledevice6 (>= 1.1.0); however:
  Package libimobiledevice6 is not installed.
 ifuse depends on libplist3 (>= 1.11); however:
  Package libplist3 is not installed.

you can download and install libplist3, but installation of
libimobiledevice6 gives:

Unpacking libplist3:amd64 (1.12-3.1+b1) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libimobiledevice6:amd64:
 libimobiledevice6:amd64 depends on libgcrypt20 (>= 1.7.0); however:
  Version of libgcrypt20:amd64 on system is 1.6.3-2+deb8u2.
 libimobiledevice6:amd64 depends on libgnutls30 (>= 3.5.6); however:
  Package libgnutls30 is not installed.
 libimobiledevice6:amd64 depends on libtasn1-6 (>= 4.5); however:
  Version of libtasn1-6:amd64 on system is 4.2-3+deb8u2.
 libimobiledevice6:amd64 depends on libusbmuxd4 (>= 1.0.10); however:
  Package libusbmuxd4 is not installed.

what is available on Jessie?
libgnutls28 (3.3.8-6), libtasn1-6 (4.2-3), libusbmuxd2 (1.0.9-1)

according to the package tracker (https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/ifuse):
O: This package has been orphaned and needs a maintainer.

ifuse was in Wheezy, but was removed for the release of Jessie. It may
be included in Stretch.
