#182500 — flash in stretch again

Subjectflash in stretch again
Message-ID<tV30u-gs-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
I just updated some packages and it upgraded me to stretch. That is all
fine but I cannot get flash to work yet again. Is there any help out
there for this program. I even installed Chromium with pepperflash and
it won't work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running on an AMD A8, Toshiba satellite, with stretch. Thanks.

Yes I did try firefox-esr and it doesn't work. I have installed
flashplugin-nonfree 1:3.6.1+deb8u1 and pepperflashplugin-nonfree
1.8.1+deb8u1

I had jessie and I went to synaptic and it upgraded to stretch. I
should have paid more attention to what I was doing. Neither flash will
work in firefox-esr or chromium. I only tried chrome to see if it would
work as I don't use it normally.

When did you run the flashplugin-nonfree install?

As far as I can determine, that package has been in a nonworking state
since January, to the point where it was left out of the stretch
release. That's not because of any problem in the package internals, but
because something changed *outside of* the package - in particular, on
Adobe's Website - and something *else* outside of the package has not
been updated to match.

What that package does is see what Flash-for-Linux version is available
on Adobe's Website, download a hash file for that same version from one
Debian developer's personal Debian Webspace, download the Flash
installer from Adobe's Website, then compare the installer's hash
against the one from the hash file. This happens automatically at
download, and can be triggered manually later by running
'update-flashplugin-nonfree --install'. The apparent purpose of all of
this is to make sure that what the package downloads and runs isn't
malicious code (due to e.g. domain hijacking).

What happened in January is that Adobe released a new Flash version, and
no one copied a matching hash file into place. Several new Flash
versions have been released since then, with no more reaction, despite
several bug reports on this subject (most or all of which have been
merged into one in the bugtracker, so plainly the Debian developers know
about the issue).

Without the hash file, existing versions of this package will never be
able to download the Flash installer, and so installing or gpgrading
Flash will fail. If you download the Flash installer from Adobe
yourself, and run it (as root, with any needed options) yourself, it
should still work - but the flashplugin-nonfree package itself is
currently useless, and that's why it wasn't included with the stretch
release.

I've been concerned about this exact failure state, in lesser form
(unreasonable delay in getting access to security fixes), ever since I
first noticed that the package was pulling an upstream-version-specific
file from a place apparently controlled by only one single person...

FTR, downloading the .gz archive from Adobe and copying over the
included 'libflashplayer.so' into the appropriate directory (e.g.,
$HOME/.mozilla/plugins), as one's normal user, also works. It's what
I've been doing.

Are there no fixes to this problem? I have tried everything that I know
how to do. Still nothing and it doesn't matter which browser I use. It
worked just fine in Jessie and I am really sorry it upgraded to Stretch.

Works fine for me in firefox-esr in stretch using flashplayer from Marillat.

Add to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch main non-free

Then:
# apt-get update, then apt-get install flashplayer-mozilla

Good luck!

I did as you said and I got the same results as I did before I installed
it. Two games just send me to Adobe and one just keeps loading but
never does a thing. Something is wrong and I can't find the damn
thing. Any other suggestions?

Download page:
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Download the .tar.gz (should be the same as this link):
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=FP_24.0_for_Linux_64-bit_(.tar.gz)_-_NPAPI&sType=5504&standalone=1
<https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=FP_24.0_for_Linux_64-bit_%28.tar.gz%29_-_NPAPI&sType=5504&standalone=1>

For the next steps, you need to be root.

Extract the library (change the path to where you downloaded the .tar.gz):

tar zxfO /path/to/flash_player_npapi_linux.x86_64.tar.gz
libflashplayer.so > /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

Fix permissions:

chmod 644 /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

Register the plugin:

update-alternatives --quiet --install
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flash-mozilla.so flash-mozilla.so
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so 50

with no results at all. Any other suggestions?

You need to search and find all "libflashplayer.so" on your computer and
delete them and then reinstall flashplayer and that should fix your problem.

you have to install this package - forget the download from adobe - it's
much easier to use the debian package

$ dpkg -l | grep flash
ii flashplayer-mozilla 3:26.0.0.126-dmo1

I could not find a package named flashplayer-mozilla. Where is it? I am running
debian/testing.

If a user does not enable the non-free component of the archive,
apt-cache show will show no result for that search.

Yeah, but this is an external 3rd party repo and not the original debian one.
So it is clear, why it cannot be found.

As far as I know, this repo is meanwhile orphaned (or is this changed in the
last years?) as the multimedia packages are integrated now in the original
repos of debian.

Do I miss something?

Best

Yeah, I see now. I totally overlooked that it was a third-party repo
package. Sorry for the pointless noise. You got that right.

On the debian wiki, there is the DebianMultimedia/FAQ page. On that
page, FAQ numbers 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8 explain (far better than I
could) the (non-)relationship of deb-multimedia.org to
DebianMultimedia:

Nothing but a can of worms, AFAICT.

The OP stated he downloaded the non free version. He/Her's problem is it
doesn't work and the goal is to work.

If OP does add the repo and use the package, chances are good to complete
the goal.

Have you verified that 'update-alternatives --list flash-mozilla.so'

returns

 /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so
or
 /home/user_maureen/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

?

Maureen, I was wondering the same (not so "simple") thing: Did
libflashplayer.so eventually and ultimately install in the right place
in your file hierarchy?

In years past, I've gone so far as to put it everywhere I thought
rational until it would work. My method of operation was/is to target
any sub-directories with the name "plugins" for each and every browser
I used.

Eventually I picked one higher profile location for the "real",
original libflashplayer.so file. I then symlinked everywhere else so
that I only had to replace that one primary file on upgrades. It never
caused me noticeable conflicts, but that might not be the same
experience for others.

The only caveat I've faced so far is that I have to remember to repeat
that process when I start from scratch with each new, regular
debootstrap (full operating system install) attempt.

Another thing is there is at least one related "toggle" usually
available in a browser's preference settings. It would be about
plugins if it exists. It would be about enabling/disabling/deleting
and is something that it never hurts to check off on a debug list.

Just thinking out loud... :)

Cindy :)

It returns /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so
it also return one for gnash. could this be the problem or confusion?
