*Hi everybody,*

*Strange, until today, I believed that a pdf file written in any language
can be read by a pdf reader, since it is binary !! For example evince, and
not I was wrong !!The following file is a pdf file in Arabic, it is read
correctly under windows by acrobat reader, but not with evince, some parts
are read but not others, (nevertheless my coding of the system is utf8),
but what is the link with utf8, since pdf is binary !!Please, how can I
fix this problem, thank you very much and in advance*

There are two problems here. The first is that there is no PDF file
to look at. The second is, even if there was, you would be relying
on someone on an English speaking list being able to read it and
judge its quality.

PDF is fundamentally a text format, but it is usually compressed,
sometimes encrypted, and may contain embedded binary documents such as
images. Sometimes the text in a PDF is in the form of an image, where
some real physical text has been scanned and embedded in a PDF as an
image, but more usually, the text is in a standard encoded form such as
ASCII or UTF8.

Note: the computer needs to have installed on it all the fonts used in
an encoded-text document, or else the document has to contain the
fonts embedded within it. This may be where your problem lies, in more
than one font having been used, though I would expect a PDF reader
which is missing a font to tell you so and invite you to install it.

PDF was basically developed from PostScript, and PS files pretty well
are raw text which a text editor can display (but not interpret), and
PS is a distant descendent of pure text plotter driver languages such as
HPGL.

> thank you very much and in advance*

Not all PDF readers are created equal. PDF is effectively a programming
language, and different implementations of an interpreter for the
language do not all behave in the same way.

I've had quite a lot of trouble with Evince, mostly, it has to be said,
with PDFs generated by applications which are not primarily PDF
creators. I've not yet found one of these dodgy documents which Okular
can't handle. It's a bit slow, but it gets there, and it's worth a try
in your case. If it works, and Evince doesn't, and your document isn't
confidential, you might consider submitting a bug report to the Evince
developers.

Note that Windows Acrobat Reader is produced by the people who invented
PDF, and will generally do the best job of rendering a PDF file. There
are derivatives of PDF which just about only Acrobat Reader will
handle, though Foxit tries to keep up. There is a Linux version of
Foxit, but it's not Open Source. Neither was the Adobe Acrobat Reader,
and Adobe dropped support for that a few years ago.

Hi,

First, please avoid written your emails in bold with a huge font, it is
very annoying to read (this is probably the reason why you did no
receive any answer).

I can't tell about the details, but you should try other PDF viewers,
like Okular or xpdf: it is very possible that you will get better result.

Yvan

PS: Sorry for the previous direct answer, I am still not used to click
on "Answer to the list" in my email client.

No previous responses? Perhaps the mails had fonts too small for you to
see them. :)

Brian is very knowledgeable in many areas but unless your request meets Brian's
specifications all you will get from him is criticism on how the request was placed.
If you don't believe me check the archives of the list for this Brian-bot!

He does have a point about the missing file, all I can contribute is that I have seen multilingual documents with Evince
and in many cases Arabic was included and displayed in correctly. One does not need to understand the language to
identify and distinguish correct display from an error message.
The advice from other contributors about the other packages that read and display pdf's is sound advice.
In addition, there are some conversion packages and/or plugins that convert a pdf to other printable formats, although
I have great doubt that they can do any better job than evince. Are you sure the document is not locked by a password
that evince can not deal with?

Welcome to the Debian zoo!

thanks a lot
I think it is an encoding problem.
When I open it in embedde pdf reader in firefox, the a print it as a pdf
file I get same problem,
but if I print it as a PS file, the problem is fixed and the display is
correct.
So the problem is in " pdf font" ?
by the way pdf uses font?

thanks again
regards

From: abelahcene@gmail.com

thanks a lot
I think it is an encoding problem.
When I open it in embedde pdf reader in firefox, the a print it as a pdf file I get same problem,
but if I print it as a PS file, the problem is fixed and the display is correct.

As far as I know this would make it a ps file renamed as .pdf? This is a different format/language.
I'm pretty sure there are utilities that would read the one format and export the other.
But as others mentioned, a pdf file produced by acrobat will always work everywhere, while those
that are exported by other software may not be equally accessible by all pdf viewers.

So the problem is in " pdf font" ?
by the way pdf uses font?

Not always, you may look at a pdf text document and all there is is a picture of a printed page
which only ocr could possibly convert back to text. So there is no fonts or text in a picture.
Usually you find this in scanned documents or from authors that do not want you to copy/paste
their text. An easy way to tell this would be to click and drag the mouse as in blocking text and
see if it can actually copy lines. In a picture you can only copy the whole page as an image,
but no text.

thanks again
regards

no problem, but the way this works on the list is that whoever responds may not always
know everything, so others correct their responses, and knowledge gets dialectically
refined. If what I stated here is wrong you can bet people will jump and correct me, so
we both learn from them, if they are right!
