Richard Owlett accomplished it without anything special as regards an
initrd. His installation to the SD device was from a straight up-and-up
installer. It is very, very doubtful that the initrd on his HD had been
customised. Details at

  https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2017/04/msg00329.html

So, the question remains. Is creating an initrd on Debian really necessary?

For environment clarification *ONLY*
I had transferred contents of DVD 1 of 13 to a flash drive.
I then chose that "dvd" as my 'boot device'

I am not at 100% sure, but AFAIK when you install the kernel mkinitramfs or
update-initramfs would add the modules already used by the kernel at the
moment of creation of the initrd. This could explain a lot.

As I explained before it is not possible to mount the root fs thus pass the
boot process to init/systemd if you don't have the proper driver(s). If the
drivers are included in the initrd it would boot ok, if not you are offered
the limitted shell. So again initrd is needed unless you have the drivers
compiled in the kernel. You can try this .. just remove the initrd line
when you boot

The OP wonders if

  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromSD

it will work for Debian. The answer is "probably" but it is questionable
whether the advice to alter the initrd on the SD card need be followed.
Perhaps it was necessary for the Ubuntu kernel at the time the article
was written. The hardware involved would have to be known to more
definitive.

Debian would need to be installed to the SD card and the *same" Debian
installed to the USB stick. lsinitramfs will help confirm whether needed
modules are in an initrd.

Not the kernel, but the default initramfs.
I seem to remember reading a recent post reporting that a SD/MMC driver
was missing in the default Debian initramfs.

Debian does not need to be installed on the USB stick. Only /boot and
the boot loader.

Yup.

Indeed.

Now fixed.

Fair enough, but d-i is a quick, painless and friendly method to achieve
the same objective and keep stick and card in sync with updates.

It will work definitely the same way as it is described in this Ubuntu
artice.
As the article states, if your laptop can boot from SD no work is needed.
If it works or not, you'll find right after you reboot ;-)

Not the same debian - you can install on the SD card and move or copy just
the boot directory to the usb, so that grub and pre init can do the work.

Now that we know the OP's machine has a Ricoh card reader I agree
"probably" could be raised to "definitely". But the palaver of
altering an initrd is still unnecessary.

His machine cannot boot from an SD card.

I got carried away. :)
