I know that Alt+F2 does not start konsole. What is happening is that
the little input window pops up when I press Alt+F2. But when I enter
konsole in it and press Enter key, nothing happens. That is the
problem.

The little input window is the program called krunner. Using that term
in web searches might lead to more insight. You might also start
krunner from a shell and see if it produces any errors.

Thanks Kushal. Now I have something to search for.

When I run krunner from the konsole terminal, the little input window
pops up but I see a segmentation fault on the terminal. That explains
why I can't launch any launch any applications from it.

rajulocal@hogwarts ~ % krunner
KCrash: crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2
KCrash: Application Name = krunner path = /usr/bin pid = 4640
KCrash: Arguments: /usr/bin/krunner
zsh: segmentation fault krunner

Looks like someone already filed a bug report on this:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=829614#10 . I will
try the suggestions listed there and ping back if I need more help.

That is correct, Brad! It used to work a while ago. But it stopped
working recently..

Yes, of course. I showed the version of konsole installed in my
original post. Here it is again, just in case.

rajulocal@hogwarts ~ % dpkg -l konsole
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name                 Version         Architecture    Description

ii konsole 4:16.04.2-1 amd64 X terminal emulator

It is the same problem with any other application. For example, I
tried gvim, konqueror, ksysguard and they do not start either.

No, it is the other way around. Something is wrong with the
application that starts when we press Alt+F2.

I don't often use that method to launch programs myself, so I just tried
it out of curiosity. All I can tell you is that it works for me.
Software launches without problem from there.

Sadly, I have no idea where to look to diagnose what's wrong.

Hi Brad,
If you do not mind, could you please provide the list of packages
installed on your machine? You can email it to me directly
(raju.mailinglits@gmail.com) or provide a link to download. I would
like to compare the list with mine.

The list can be obtained by running
dpkg -l | grep ^ii > installed_packages.txt

thanks
