Yes, this is exactly what seems to happen. But the funny thing is--when the
system has resumed, there is no way to switch the screen on!

If you suspend to RAM, then hibernate, what happens if you do not
suspend to RAM first?

On my system, if I hibernate with everything on (including the monitor) all
works fine.

Instead, if I hibernate with the monitor off (but the system is not
suspended), I got the problem I described in my original post. When I wake up
the system, I see the boot messages, everything seems fine, but at the end of
the resume phase the monitor switches off and I have no way to turn it on,
apart from a reboot.

I would set it not to suspend. That causes the setting of monitor
off/on to be stored in RAM. When it then hibernates, that reminder to
turn the monitor back on is lost.

So are you saying the behaviour I see is normal? Does it always happen? Do you
experience this? Such behaviour doesn't seem correct to me. Why doesn't that
reminder get saved to disk, when the system hibernate, like everything else?

The sequence turn off screen -> suspend -> hibernate would seem pretty
standard to me. Basically you are saying that I should hibernate as the first
power management step, which I would consider overkill, after just e.g. 5
minutes inactivity.

So, just out of curiosity, what happens if you use ctrl-alt-Fn to
switch between virtual consoles several times after the box gets stuck
thinking the screen is off?

I don't have virtual consoles. During installation I could switch between
different consoles with CTRL-ALT-Fn, but since installation has completed this
key sequence doesn't produce any result. I haven't bothered to investigate
this thing yet.

Well, that's not true. In fact I do have virtual consoles. On the Mac I need
to press ctrl+alt+fn+Fi, where i=1, 2, 3... 6 to get to one of the six
vconsoles I have. fn is the key that makes the top row keys act as function
keys:
http://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/macbook-keyboard.jpg

As for Joel's question, trying to switch between virtual consoles several
times doesn't result in anything--the screen keeps staying black. And it's not
the system that *thinks* the screen is off. It is indeed off, as the following
command from an ssh session shows:

$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power
4

bl_power = 4 means the screen is off.

I sent a bug report on this issue some weeks ago, but it's not been considered
till now, so I wonder whether I sent it to the right place and whether it will
ever be considered:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=850221

Cheers,
  Davide
