#172710 — Change of UUID?

FromHans <hans.ullrich@loop.de>
Date2016-09-23 17:50 +0200
SubjectChange of UUID?
Message-ID<skATD-5G1-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hello list,

I need some help for understanding things.

On my EEEPC I am usiing encrypted partitions, also swap is encrypted (all
luks), too.
When I ssuspend to disk, the memory is written to the encrypted swap
partition, which is /dev/mapper/swap.

In /etc/uswsusp.conf the UUID is identically to the output of "blkid /dev/
mapper/swap".

BUT - Now the problem: From time to time the UUID of /dev/mapper/swap changes
and is then of course different to the entry in /etc/uswsusp.conf.

This means, the system sometimes inhibits to boot (after resume), as it does
not find the resume device. It can then be started by adding "noresume" to the
kernel commands.

So, what might change the UUID? I did not format swap or similar. The only
thing I do from time to time is starting a livefile on this computer, buit this
should not change the UUID, shouldn't it?

But maybe, I have misunderstood, how UUID's are created. The other
partiitions, which are also encrypted, do NOT change.

Or is it a bug?

Thanks for any help to enlightening me.

Best regards

Hans

Can you give an example of such time?

The Debian installer reformats an existing swap, which means it gets a new
UUID, unless you go out of your way to prevent it from doing so.

What do you mean by "starting a livefile"?

Sure, from time-to-time means 2-3 times a week, but randomly.

No, I did not install Debian, I am running this now for several years.

I mean something like this:

blkid /dev/mapper/swap
/dev/maoper/swap UUID="ba1b8eXXX-and-sop-on" TYPE="swap" PTTYPE="dos"
PARTUUID="0007a381-05"

# /etc/uswsusp.conf(5) -- Configuration file for s2disk/s2both
resume device = /dev/disk/by-uuid/fd45123cf-and-so-on"
compress = y
early writeout = y
image size = 1908094484
RSA key file = /etc/uswsusp.key
shutdown method = platform

UUID's (anonymized by me) are different!

Best

Possible workaround:

1-recreate swap using -L to give swap a volume label
2-adjust Grub config to direct resume to LABEL instead of UUID
3-adjust fstab to mount swap by LABEL instead of UUID

If this succeeds, file a bug, maybe against device-mapper or multipath-tools.

I wish to go out of my way, so to speak.
Can you point me to "the road less traveled"?
My environment is a laptop dedicated to installing various
configurations of Jessie. It is extremely annoying that only the
last installed {and *most likely* to be removed} boots promptly -
the other installs having problems with finding an invalid UUID.
I gets worse as I occasionally install a system and its intended
swap partition to a flash drive - effectively clobbering all
installs on the laptop.
TIA

My thoughts would be to mark the partition you wish to use as swap as
"Do not use" in the installer. Then, on the first boot, add the
partition manually to /etc/fstab:

UUID=...	none	swap	sw	0	0

If you then wish to use that swap without rebooting, run "swapon --all".

It might save a lot of typing to use LABEL rather than UUID.
(Of course the necessity might be avoided with pre-seeding
about which I know little; I've probably installed Debian
fewer times than the OP has installed jessie in a day.)

IIRC the partitioning phase of installer does not allow
specifying a label for the swap partition.

I rarely install Jessie more than twice a day ;)
Although I may have installed Squeeze 5 times in one day.

In context of $SUBJECT, it would seem opportunity for setting a label on swap
has already been presented, and the problem has to do with a change. If a label
already exists, that the installer can't create one should be irrelevant. (That
is can't I consider a design flaw.) By deselecting swap in partitioning you
maintain the status quo.

<chuckle> I got trapped in a mental rut. I now have a new mental
outline of how to start from scratch when doing the first install

I'm sorry. I was conflating "It has had as many as a half dozen clean
installs in a single day" with "a laptop: [...] whose HD has been
erased multiple times in ONE day [... and] has multiple installs
of Debian, primarily classed [into three categories]. But not all
jessie then.

Cheers,
David.

Any permutation you can think of, I've probably done it. My

I'd do exactly as Darac suggests, with one adjustment:

I'd add a "mkswap /dev/disk/by-uuid/<whatever>" here, with one extra suggestion...

I would suggest exactly the above; except, I'd label the swap partition "swap"
(by adding "-L" in the mkswap invocation), use LABEL=swap in the fstab and set
that in *all* of the fstabs for each installed OS.

Works a charm.
As I always use preseeding I'll have to investigate using a
post-install script to automate the fixup. Haven't yet had need
to learn how to use such a script.

This is my routine ever since discovering the Debian installer's rudeness.

As my swaps always have a label set, I use it, and not UUID=. UUIDs weren't made
for humans.

If all you use this laptop for is installing jessie, is it
necessary for you to have any swap available? Would that be
something worth knowing?

Cheers,
David.

Until doing an install to test Darac's suggestion, I haven't done
an install since before Christmas. I admit that stability sets
some sort of record for me ;) In general I doubt that I've
actually have needed swap space.

I expect to go live on my Debian box very soon. I may make it
before my Windows box has hardware failure.
