#176118 — Trouble shooting a "thinkfan" problem on a Lenovo T430 Thinkpad

SubjectTrouble shooting a "thinkfan" problem on a Lenovo T430 Thinkpad
Message-ID<sU90u-7ha-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
I just purchased a used T430 to replace a R61 which had died to a
fan failure.
I've installed a minimal Jessie including what installer
considers standard utilities and a very basic MATE DE.

I used Synaptic to install "mate-system-tools".
An error message said "thinkfan post installation script returned
error exit status 1".
I checked for airflow - there was NONE.
Booted into Windows 7. There was warm airflow whose temperature
decreased with time.
I returned to Debian and attempted to reinstall "thinkfan.
Error message stated "attempted to reinstall E: Internal Error,
No file name for thinkfan:i386".

Two questions:

1. How may I force the fan to run continuously at maximum speed.
Noise &/or power consumption is not important.

2. What/where is this "missing file"? Any diagnostic suggestions?

TIA

ThinkWiki has been a great resource for me and my T520. It has sources
for special drivers as well as directions on making things work.

There is lots of information there. Whether I can understand it
well enough to use is another question.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_control_fan_speed had said:
# echo level 4 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (medium speed)
which resulted in
bash: echo: write error: invalid argument

I suspect the error messages I quoted in my original post give
the needed information.
I don't have a clue what they mean.

If you added "(medium speed)" to the command line, then this would be wrong.
But i get
-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('
when i try to do this with a regular file address after ">".

By googling i found this candidate:

  http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/82246/how-to-control-thinkpad-acpi-via-procfs-rhel-6-4

  "# echo 5 >/proc/acpi/ibm/fan
bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument"

"Fan control operations are disabled by default for safety reasons.
To enable fan control, the module parameter fan_control=1 must be given
   to thinkpad-acpi. [... detailed instructions ...]"

  "Thanks, that was it."

One should of course try to find out what is supposed to be installed
by package "thinkfan" and why your Debian does not find it on the
attempt to install it explicitely.
There is a package "thinkfan" and it gets built for i386:
  https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=thinkfan

  https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-pkg_basics.en.html
at the end of paragraph 7.6 says that the failed "post installation script"
should be on your machine in
  /var/lib/dpkg/info/thinkfan.postinst

So what do you get from
  ls /var/lib/dpkg/info/thinkfan.*

If there is a thinkfan.postinst : What is its content ?

*.postinst in general riddles me. I can see a file acpi-support-base.postinst
in
  https://sources.debian.net/src/acpi-support/0.142-8/debian/
but no bc.postinst in
  https://sources.debian.net/src/bc/1.06.95-9/debian/
although both .postinst files exist on my Debian 8.
The ./debian directory of package "thinkfan"
  https://sources.debian.net/src/thinkfan/0.9.3-1/debian/
does not have a file thinkpad.postinst either.
So there seem to be automats which produce .postinst at packaging time.

(I need to read more Debian packager manuals ...)

Have a nice day :)

Looks like an attempt to register and start thinkfan with the old init
system. Is this appropriate for your system ?

If you really use sysV init rather than systemd, you should check whether
there are links
  /etc/rc*.d/*thinkfan
pointing to file
  /etc/init.d/thinkfan

If you use systemd, then there is the riddle why there is an executable
file /etc/init.d/thinkfan.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The script
  https://sources.debian.net/src/thinkfan/0.9.3-1/rcscripts/thinkfan.init
when run with argument "start" executes

  start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile /var/run/thinkfan.pid --exec /usr/sbin/thinkfan

So

  ps -ef | grep thinkfan

should tell whether the daemon is running or whether you have to start
it on your own (most probably as superuser).

Have a nice day :)

One of your links lead to
https://sources.debian.net/src/thinkfan/0.9.3-1/debian/README.Debian/
which I think agrees with you.

One thing that continues to bother me is that thinkfan is
disabled by default because an improper parameter could damage
the computer. If that is true, why isn't the fan always on? The
documentation I've found indicates it's original motivation was
to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise. ??? ;/

A comment on another forum prompted me to run a Live Jesse MATE
on my T43 (a dedicated Windows box). The fan speed actually
increased. That gave me confidence to run some additional test on
the T430. Caught the fan running once. Ran my existing install
for about an hour without catching fan running. Quit and
immediately booted Windows. Fan ran and exhaust air seemed safely
cool. I'll do a complete reload after chasing down appropriate
monitoring apps.

Thinkfan may be having problems. But something seems to be
keeping me in safe territory.

More later.

Wiped existing installs. Did standard full install with MATE
desktop without print server or activation of networking. Added
mate-system-tools and mate-sensors-applet (which is now
displaying core temperatures). This sequence did *NOT* install
thinkfan. However it is obvious that something is triggering the
fan when a core temperature hits ~40 deg C.

I'll not pursue the installation of thinkfan as I see no benefit
and do see the possibility of breaking something. I'll continue
to investigate the various display and logging apps available.

Gkrellm {http://gkrellm.srcbox.net/} has been recommended and is
in the repositories. I'll try it out.

Thanks to all.

Please note that to us serious man page writers the difference between trouble shooting
a thinkfan and troubleshooting a thinkfan can be of mortal import.
