Hello, A month or two ago I moved a certain computer from jessie to stretch and after doing so found that neither the right nor the middle mouse buttons have any effect when clicked on the XFCE desktop. The expected thing happens when clicking on a panel, but on the desktop, nothing. To get to the applications menu I have to have that button on a panel and always use it. I recall vaguely, in past version updates, having the same problem and eventually finding a checkbox somehere that had come unchecked during the upgrade process, but this time I've searched in vain for a checkbox or any other means to reset it. I've done searches for mention of anyone else having this problem and found nothing. I did find people actually wanting to disable right clicking on desktop in kiosk mode and being told that it's impossible without recompiling which makes me wonder how this has happened. I'm wondering if this is a bug or have I just not yet found the proper place to reset something? Don MacDougall

They are both checked, but the Desktop Menu box only determines whether the Applications menu is appended to the other items that show up when you right-click. When I right-click, nothing shows, whether the box is checked or unchecked. I've changed both of those setting and my problem never changes. I have several other machines (one almost identical except for the debian version) that are still on Jessie and on them checking those boxes has the expected effect as it did on this on before the upgrade, but on this one with version Jessie there simply is nothing whatsoever that happens when right-clicking on the desktop. I wondered if the right mouse buttons was not registering at all, but I found that it operates just fine when over a panel. Don

It looks like pretty much everything else in xfce is running, but xfdesktop isn't. Now I guess I gotta figure out why. I've been looking for errors in logfiles, but I'm not sure where to begin. Don

Once you get it running, as long as you have your session set to remember what processes are running, it should start when you log in again. mike

The man page says it should be started without arguments, but when I do that it says "Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:" so I guess it's trying to find some arguments in some config file. I've looked for where it might be looking for them and why it can't parse them but there seem to be quite a few config xml files and I haven't yet figured out which one or ones it is attempting to parse and why it can't parse them. I was hoping it might have an option to run verbosely so I could see where it is failing but no such luck. I may have to download the source and read it to find out where those error messages are pointing to. If someone can suggest an easier way, I'm all ears. Thanks for letting me know that once I get it to start xfce should keep track of that and restart it the next time, I didn't know that. Don

Otherwise, running it from a shell works fine for me. Can you start other X-based applications, e.g., xclock, from the same shell? What is the output from echo $DISPLAY ? mike

So I set it and then the error message became: Failed to connect to session manager: Failed to connect to the session manager: SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined I notice there are several other variables missing which do appear on another machine with working xfce system, i.e. one still on stretch distribution, such as XDG_MENU_PREFIX=xfce-, XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg as well as SESSION_MANAGER and several others. Huh. How odd. I guess the next step would be to do "pgrep xf" on a working and non-working system and see what's not running on the non-working system. (In particular, is xfce4-session running?) Then make sure the corresponding packages are installed on the non-working system. What display manager is the non-working system using? Is /usr/bin/startxfce4 present on the non-working system? mike

I don't think there is any display manager on the working system. On it, startx runs xinit which starts xfce4. startxfce4 is present on both systems. I did something yesterday and ended up restarting the system on the non-working machine and mow it looks like xfce4 isn't running on that machine. I don't have physical access to it till Sunday afternoon. I'm currently working on it through a remote shell and I'm not sure if or how I can start an X session on the console from a remote shell so I think I'll have to continue this next week. Then I'll compare them with pgrep and see what differences there are. Until then, thanks for your help. To be continued. Don

When I updated the packages I noticed that a number of xfce4 packages updated. I don't know if any of the changes in them had anything to do with things working correctly afterwards or just coincidence. Thank you very much for your help. I know a little bit more about XFCE4 now than I did. Don
