I have an acer aspire xc-704g 64 bit machine. I installed debian 8.5 on it and it went through the whole install with no problems once I had the rtl driver on a separate usb drive. So I booted it up and it went through the whole process to the final screen and all I get is the - symbol in the upper left hand corner and a dark screen. Nothing after that it just freezes. I keep getting the message that the i8042 controller not found. What the hell did I do know. I am so frustrated with this machine and have never had this type of trouble before. When I looked it all up on the net it talked about a PS2 keyboard but I am using the keyboard that came with the machine and it is a USB but I do have a USB port plugged into the USB to add additional ports as this machine only has two ports on the back and I need four. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Maureen

[Please reply on list. Good. You must type the root password to start a shell. Then what happens if you run 'startx' in the shell ? It should launch a graphic environment. If it does not hang with a blinking cursor again, then the issue could be with the desktop manager. > but after it reboots from that it still stops at the blinking - in the > upper left hand corner. If it is a graphic issue, you may want to try to add "nomodeset" to the kernel command line in the boot menu.

OK so I did the startx and the first time got nothing and the machine froze. So to make sure that my disks were not missing anything I downloaded a new set and re-burned them. I did the startx and this time I got a page full of blue with ( across the page. I had to use an adapter from DVI to hdmi since this machine only has HDMI slots and no place else for DVI or VGA. I checked the adapter and it was different from the female plug which were 8 holes each of three rows but the adapter had 3 two spaces and 3 prongs in three matching rows. I wonder if that could be the problem? On 08/10/2016 03:44 AM, Pascal Hambourg wrote: > [Please reply on list. OK so I did the nomodeset and still nothing. Obviously there is a problem with the video and nothing else but I can't find a driver for the screen I have. It is an HP w2007 model. It says it has intel hd graphics on the mother board. Is there something else I can try? On 08/09/2016 04:21 PM, Maureen L Thomas wrote: > I have an acer aspire xc-704g 64 bit machine. You discover this by running "lspci -nn". Once we know the video chipset, we may either jump straight to "Oh yeah, video chipset XXX needs driver YYY, so you just do ZZZ", or there may be some uncertainty about which driver/version to use, in which case someone may ask to see your Xorg log file. But definitely start by identifying the video chipset. Post the entire output of "lspci -nn" here.
