#167758 — Chromium. Good Alternative for Chrome?

SubjectChromium. Good Alternative for Chrome?
Message-ID<rxO4V-3zH-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Now that Google Chrome support has ceased for Wheezy (and others), and
since I have no plans to upgrade the OS for another 2 years when it
reaches LTS EOL, would Chromium make a decent alternative? Is it stable
enough for regular use? I've never used it and opinions vary.
Everything I've read says Chromium is "cutting edge." Are we talking
"Unstable-like" to "Testing?" Or Fedora to Red Hat?

Any alternatives instead of Chromium? I mainly desire
stability, security and longevity. Already have the most recent
version of Firefox installed, but prefer it only as a back up.
Iceweasel has been purged.

Or, maybe, I'll just continue to use the old, unsupported Chrome.

Thanks.

Give a try at Opera. I find it great.

I installed Opera last week to test and it worked fine, but this
week it refuses to load.* So, purged it. Decided to manually set up
opera repo, etc. instead of downloading the deb file from Opera as
I had done originally. As yet haven't reinstalled. Thought I'd check
on Chromium first.

* Maybe my converting over to opejdk7-jre and icedtea-7-plugin as
the Oracle noticed stated (and purging 6) caused the problem.

Chromium would not be a good choice in Wheezy LTS as its life
has ended in Wheezy.

https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2016-1622

You should probably run 'check-support-status' to obtain a list of
packages on your machine that are no longer supported security-wise.

Hi,

Install the package 'debian-security-support'.

Best,

In this case you are looking for a file from a package and not for a
package.

try apt-file search check-support-status

assuming that apt-file is installed and updated..

Thanks for the info. I hadn't gotten far enough in my research to
realize this. So, Chromium is outed!

Chromium used to have screen reader acessibility which was useable with
orca but that went away then speech-dispatcher support was available for
a short time and now that's gone too. So long as you won't need screen
reader accessibility with orca you should be good to go.

Firefox/iceweasel is the best choice

Anyway
Google Chrome is based on chromium, so is a replacement

Installed the new Firefox (and its repo) a while ago, but prefer it
only as a back up just like Iceweasel which I've since purged. One
caveat being both used Adobe Flash which caused problems on some sites
I frequent -- not "current" enough. No problem with Chrome/pepperflash
though.

> Anyway

I was hoping that Chromium unlike Chrome might still be supported in
Wheezy. I've since discovered, it's not. Considering Opera now.
Looks like it uses pepperflash. Unfortunately, don't know as yet, if
updates to Opera will also update pepperflash, too. I'll be glad when
Flash is finally and totally abandoned.

I'm getting to the point now that I might just continue to use
Chrome, supported or not, until it stops doing the job.
