#167415 — WebGL support suddely broken

FromPaolo Cavallini <cavallini@faunalia.it>

SubjectWebGL support suddely broken
Message-ID<ruBQC-2I1-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi all,
after an upgrade on sid, WebGL support is broken on my system, both for
Firefox and for Chromium. The symptoms are the same as here:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28466387/error-creating-webgl-context-in-chrome-but-not-in-android-browser
Any hint on how to fix this? I suspect some webkit component is missing.
All the best, and thanks.

Firefox doesn't use webkit.

Do you get the same error message in both browsers? What else changed
during the upgrade? Do you have working OpenGL in general?

yes

unsure about that, I upgrade almost daily, do not know exactly when it
got broken

how can I check this?

If glxinfo segfaults, something is quite wrong.

What is your setup? Do you use a proprietary graphics driver that broke
during an upgrade?

Make sure all the necessary mesa libs are installed.

Xorg logs might be useful. should be in ~/.local/share/xorg or
/var/log/

Backtrace from the glxinfo crash might be useful.

I don't use aptitude, but I guess this means the glx-alternative-mesa
package is installed?

Have you double checked that the correct glx provider is configured?

It's probably not necessary. I guess glxinfo just barfs without a GLX
extension.

The blurb in the package description says "update-glx --config glx"

Presumably you installed this package when you had another driver
installed?

I don't have it on any on my systems so I don't think it's installed by
default.

not voluntarily -maybe it's a dep of other packages?

so do you suggest to remove both
libgl1-fglrx-glx
libgl1-mesa-glx
?

Thanks again.

If you are using Intel, you need to reconfigure this to mesa-diverted.

If you don't use them, purging the fglrx/nvidia and glx-alternative-*
packages might also be a good idea.

Very strange, even an a system with an AMD GPU, fglrx is not installed
by default. It is only available in non-free and nothing in main
depends on non-free.

I suppose something else in non-free you have installed had
dependencies on fglrx, but that seems odd too. I also noticed that you
have nvidia-installer-cleanup, which shouldn't be necessary if you
didn't use nvidia hardware...

In fact, removing all that stuff and restarting solves the problem.
Still unsure why they got installed in the first place.
Sorry for the noise
All the best.
