I'm pxe booting the debian live cd. I currently serve filesystem.squashfs over nfs, but I'm wondering if there is a way to serve it over http like other distros offer? --gregf

Yes.
LABEL jessie-live
MENU LABEL Jessie Live
KERNEL debian/jessie/live/vmlinuz
INITRD debian/jessie/live/initrd.img
APPEND boot=live
fetch=http://servername.tld/isos/debian-live-8.3.0-amd64-standard.iso
for example.
Note that it does not, at this time, appear to work with https.

Does fetch have to pass the iso file or can it just point to the squashfs file? --gregf
