Were you referring to the ballad or the book?
If the book then the steep learning curve and encryption is already there, not
so?

I meant the book. It is hard going but if it was posted up in a really
tough mark up language and you had to run your own decryption algorithm to
hack in and upload it that would that would make it the ultimate pesky
pastebin neat freak purity test.

The 'u', 'c', 'k', 'i', 'n' and 'g' keys on your keyboard are not
working. A separate thread to deal with the issue is desirable. :)

I may have found the problem. When the majordomo message didn't return I
start digging into aol. I found the return message in the Spam bin. I've
turned the feature off and hope that fixes the problem. All I want is a
pop server and an smtp connection that stays out of my hair. This sent
without a cc to myself.

Only one piece of information was asked for. You have omotted to give

It was not returned. I finally found it in the aol spam folder. It just
had 2 lines that repeated my email address one of which was "which
gary719_list1@verizon.net" . Turning off the aol spam filter seems to
have fixed the problem.
Remember that I do not use anything of the aol web site. All of my
emails are supposed to be fed raw to my icedove mail client.

So your "quotation" above was completely inaccurate. When you are asked to
say what something said, you have to say it verbatim if you want help.

So <gary719_list1@verizon.net> is subscribed. <garyroach@verizon.net> is
probably not. You have also been posting from <garyroach@verizon.net>. That
would explain a lot. You could test <garyroach@verizon.net> the same way.

A, The posts to garyroach@verizon.net were accidental and didn't happen
very many times. The problem has been filxed. If you look through the
archives you will find almost all messages sent as garyroach@verizon.net
were followed up with a gary719_list1@verizon.net message. I screwed up
a couple of times. Mia Copa.

B. I see no reason to go further with this since everything has been
beaten into the ground and all of my problems have been fixed. I saw no
useful information in the majordomo returned message (after I found it
in the aol spam folder ). I don't use the aol web site, don't look at
the aol web site and hope to never have to look at it again. If
something gets listed as spam I will normally never know this. I use
good old icedove and set up my own filters.

C. I still think debian-user is being a bit cavalier with there handling
of rejected email and their settings on maximum file sizes. With a max
size of 10K only text can be included in an attachment. With about 50K
attachments would become useful and would not take that much longer to
transmit over a dial up line. Returning rejected messages with an
explanation can be completely automated. The argument that it would tie
up bandwidth in this day and age is ridiculous. If they had done this
with my messages this thread would be about a third of the length that
it is. There is no savings in that level of brevity.

The Majordomo message tells you that gary719_list1@verizon.net is
subscribed to debian-user. You now know for certain that you will be
sent list mails. It would be quite remarkable if, out of all the
subscribers, gary719_list1@verizon.net was not kept in the loop. It is
an incentive to look at the way your received mail is handled. Which you
have.

I have a feeling you are misunderstanding how your mail provider's
system works and the role Icedove plays in it.

I don't know where you (or anyone else) gets the idea there is a 10K
maximum size limit on attachments in mails sent to -user.

> dial up line. Returning rejected messages with an explanation can be
> completely automated. The argument that it would tie up bandwidth in this

You definitely do not want rejected messages with 100M attachments
returned to gary719_list1@verizon.net. How do you feel about getting one
every ten seconds.

> day and age is ridiculous. If they had done this with my messages this
> thread would be about a third of the length that it is. There is no savings

Not receiving an explanation about a mail which does not make it to the
list is probably a limitation in the list software, Smartlist. However,
your assumption that rejects are just thrown into the bit bucket is
unsubstantiated. They could just as well be forwarded to Listmaster for
consideration. Being a busy person, he hardly gets any time to look at
them. Then they get thrown into the bit bucket. :)

There used to be information at the bottom of the emails but it was
moved to the headers because it broke digital signatures.

You can still see this information by telling your email client to
show the full headers.

> Does Debian have there own mail server?

Yes. The list server is called lists.debian.org, aka bendel.debian.org,
and it's a machine from the Debian Project.

There are a lot of other machines from the Project for several purposes.

If you look at the list of most recent postings at
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/recent
you'll be able to see whether your contribution has arrived yet.
The page should refresh about every 20 minutes.

That's if you start a new thread. If you reply to an existing
thread, it'll be listed under that thread, which may be on
a previous page (though AIUI not a previous month).

So, for example, the post I'm replying to here is visible at
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2016/04/msg01096.html
which is listed on such a previous page at
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2016/04/thrd2.html

That information is in the headers (near the bottom):

List-Id: <debian-user.lists.debian.org>
List-URL: <https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/>
List-Post: <mailto:debian-user@lists.debian.org>

Cheers,
David.

The Debian archives. You can see your messages there. E.g. this one to which
I am replying (though I am replying from my email client and the correct
position in the thread):
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/5723DE1E.9060003@verizon.net

Since you are the only person suffering from this precise problem, it seems
unlikely to be the fault of the Debian lists. They do have idiosyncratic
ways of doing things sometimes, but they ARE posting your posts. As David
says, you can check online in the archives to see them for yourself.

What critical questions have you asked to which you have not had a reply?
Your last post, on any topic other than this, was in February, on "Setting up
HDRI in ImageMagick", when you got six replies in two days.

Try looking at the author index for each month and you will be able to see
which of your emails have got through. Here is April's to get you going:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2016/04/author.html

Your posts DO show on list. You, your ISP, your email supplier or your email
client are/is doing something strange.

Nobody should have to suffer ISP mail server limitations and
implications; far too many don't care about using TLS on the servers and
people re-use passwords with passwords being sent in plain text using
plain POP.

Nobody should have to suffer using Google mail servers either.

There are alternatives that work, the best I've found over the years is
to simply run my own mail server where, I believe, on the whole, I can
make it work the way I expect it should work.

There are other services if you can't manage it yourself for whatever
reasons you see fit.

> This google's "functionality" is a minor problem.

It's Google's main "functionality",, of which it makes it's fortunes
predominantly, that is one of the greatest problems of the Internet
these days; take Yahoo for instance, they are a data company that has
been offered for sale (not sure where that is at yet), the value is all
in the data [user profiling for starters], not in anything else Yahoo is
doing. Everybody is being scroogled, no matter what major service you
use. Add to that the malvertising coming through flash advert systems
and you get the idea that too much is broken.

Don't use Google more than you need to, don't use Yahoo more than you
need to. Don't use Lookout... (Outlook in whatever guise is still
Lookout to me). I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Reliability was another major reason for me using my own mail server;
the ISPs ones were just far too unreliable.

Oh and the https idea of strict transport security; Google, Micro$oft
and others are trying to bring in a very broken version of that for
SMTP. Why the hell can't people simply respect SPF at the very least,
and if or when that is finally used to lessen spam from unauthorized
senders, well, then they can look at DNSSEC and other options that don't
destroy SMTP. [1]. Every domain may or may not require http/https, it
may or may not require MX usage.... to link the two so strongly in such
a broken way is ludicrous.

And yes, my ISP needs to transport bits, just bits and it should do so
without discrimination of what those bits are; it should also do so
without stealing information from those bits for tracking or other
purposes. Just transport the bits, nothing more, nothing less.
