For the last several weeks my posts to this site have not been showing
up. I am not sure whether they are getting through or not. Someone
respond to the message just to show me that my postings are getting
through.

I've never seen my own posts nor in this list, nor in other lists. This
is very bad, as there are questions from me which never been asked. And
I don't know if this is due to the fact that my post didn't get to list,
or nobody have an answer.

It's because you use gmail and that has a 'feature' which you can't turn
off that deliberately hides your own messages.

I know about this. Its just a minor annoyance. I could just enter lists
site and see if it is there or not. I don't send a duplicate if message
is on list.

I don't want to use my ISP's mail account. Its limited. It can be
blocked. I can switch to another ISP.

I could setup a mail server, but why should I bother to set it up on my
linux-like router, or on my windows desktop...

This google's "functionality" is a minor problem.

I'm glad you thing this is a minor problem. Just put out a critical
question, get no answer and not know whether its due to the message not
getting through or just no interest. It drives me nuts. Things are
inconsistent as well. When I posted this thread my original message was
posted. Since then I tried to as a question requiring the inclusion of a
screen shot. I put the screen shot as an attachment. The message just
disappeared never to be heard from again. Very annoying .

Not sure what you mean by web access. To what?

My account is now with aol only because they allow me to use my old
verizon address. But I don't think that aol or my mail client is the
problem here. I have mailing lists that are hosted by GoogleGroups and
by Sourceforge that work fine. Does any one know who hosts this list. It
doesn't have any info at the bottom of the page like the others do. Does
Debian have there own mail server?

Yes Debian runs their own email server. If you want to show someone an
image, don't attach it to an email here, but use pastebin. I know Debian
has their own (don't have the url handy right now) but put it there or
anywhere and post the url in the body of your email.

It needn't be the case, but it looks like gary719_list1@verizon.net is
subscribed to the list (garyroach@verizon.net is not a subscriber). Just
as a check: send a mail to

  majordomo@lists.debian.org

with

  which gary719_list1@verizon.net

in the *body* of the mail. Either the From: or Reply-To: must have
gary719_list1@verizon.net.

A blank Subject: is ok.

A reply will be sent back within seconds of the mail being sent. What
does it say?

I think you have nailed it, Brian. When Gary sends from
garyroach@verizon.net, it doesn't make the list distribution. When he posts
from gary719_list1@verizon.net, it does, as can be seen in
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2016/04/author.html, all of the Gary
Roach emails on which come from gary719_list1@verizon.net

Very observant of you. So Gary, all you have to do is either stop posting
from garyroach@verizon.net, or subscribe it. Then you will get it sent out
to you.

Actually, the purpose of my post was to elicit information. Gary Roach
says no list mails which he himself has sent appear in his debian-user
folder (or whatever he uses). I haven't followed the thread assiduously
but he hasn't said that some appear but others don't.

Tracking down his problem depends very much on his email setup. Like
others, I am reluctant to see list operation as the issue. The list
sends mail to whatever addresses are subscribed to it but it is worth
thinking about how we on the list know someone is subscribed. For
example, there is nothing in my mails which indicates my subscription
address to other list members.

The point being: his From: address may be gary719_list1@verizon.net but
this isn't necessarily a subscribed address. The advice I gave will
confirm it or not.

OK I've created a monster. Posting to the wrong address was a problem
but I now have my mail client set up so that if I try to post with the
wrong address it screams at me. This problem solved. My problems with
returns started when I posted a problem with my kde desktop. The icons
all turned into translucent squares for no apparent reason. Someone
asked for a screen shot. I complied with a jpg attachment. I haven't
received a return message since. I still have the icon problem and
haven't a clue as to what is causing it. None of the log files show any
abnormalities. I suppose I could put my self on cc. That would sort of
fix the problem with a bandaid. As for as aol is concerned, I would like
to get as far away from them as possible but will have to change my
email addresses to do this. I am about to the point to go that route anyway.

Someone said that I need to use a pastebin for images. I've never used
one before so another Fxxxxxx Learning Experience.

I haven't posted to the majordomo list as suggested earlier but will do
so. I will post the results.

Not a big deal. Just go there, and paste in whatever it was you would have
attached to or pasted into your email. A number of locations are available,
among which:

http://paste.debian.net/
http://pastebin.com/
http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/
<your own web site, either offered by your ISP, or by installing and running
Apache on your own PC (how I do it)>
http://paste.opensuse.org/
https://paste.fedoraproject.org/
http://pastebin.com/u/Gentoo
