The command line install works with ethernet and not yet with wifi. I
tried a firmware iso and when I got to the network install I got asked if
I had broadcom drivers on another disk. Maybe those couldn't be included
in the firmware iso but if they are on that iso, the installer acted like
those were not available. I can run ethernet to download and install
missing drivers and an Xdumy package and that should get me going.

That's right. That presumes there is at least an abstract notion of
a screen and in a normal headless server, there is simply no such thing.

Hence, the need for something like Xdummy or Xvfb.

So the machine does not have a monitor plugged into it.
But does it have a graphics card?

The graphics card is probably telling X that it has failed to autodetect
a monitor. I think that you can still get around that in the X
configuration with cards with analog output but it makes more sense to
install a dummy X server.

Yes the machine has a graphics card radeon if I didn't murder the
spelling.

I think John's right about it, then: the radeon driver probably decided
to "stop" or something like that because it didn't find a monitor (and
hence couldn't choose the resolution and such).

You can probably put something in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to make it
ignore the monitor-detection failure.
But you might be better off using a dummy X server like Xdummy or Xvfb.
