I have currently no sound.

It is an ASROCK N3050B-ITX motherboard with onboard sound with the following
specifications:

Chipset Intel N3050
Sound Card Type Realtek ALC887
Number of Sound Card Channels 7.1

I have the following information:

I have installed and tried to adjust pavucontrol, but it doesn't seem to see
the sound card correctly.

Missing drivers? Which??

Very little sleep last night is probably not helping. But my husband wanted
this emergency computer fast so that he could keep up with his courses - and
for that he wants sound. :-(

Try disabling HDMI in the bios. This was work around for some audio cards
with intel chip and HDMI

From command line, enter alsamixer. It should pop up and you are
looking for muted channels. Hit F6 to chose the Intel device and you'll
see vertical volume bars. Each setting bar should display 00 just below
each bar. If you see mm then that channel is muted and you want to hit
the m key to un-mute it. I know ...primitive.

If you would rather use a nice gui then enter (as root user) apt-get
install alsamixergui. I love pulse audio, but it sits on top of alsa, so
if alsa if broken, pulse won't stand a chance. So, I'm betting 50 cents
that says fixing the alsa settings will enable sound for you. Ric

The Intel Haswell motherboard/sound in this PC with

00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)

required this in /etc/modules.d/99-local.conf:

	options snd-hda-intel index=1,0

cf. this on another machine with sound trouble running TDE:

Hi your post is interesting for me.

on the debian one it is /etc/modprobe.d/ - no?

I have similar chip if not same

00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller (rev
0b)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller (rev
04)

so there I put sound.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ and it has

## ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio

## module options should go here
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=ref enable_msi=1 enable=0,1
options snd-usb-audio index=1

which means HDMI is disabled (enable=0,1)

But according your proposal it should be possible to invert the order of how
it is initialized - correct?

Now for the setup above perhaps I should change to

options snd-hda-intel index=1,0 model=ref enable_msi=1
options snd-usb-audio index=2

What do you think Mr Miata?

Why should it be related to TDE? I do not think your statement is rectified
here. However I did not test anything else.

I screwed up, fingers badly out of sync with eyeballs. :-p modprobe.d/ it is.

I probably would never have figured out on my own to swap 0 and 1.

is where it came from. Follow-up to that bug comment begins here:

Sound config makes me crazy, sometimes just working, other times impossible
to make work, and occasionally working via minimal effort. I would have to
try your proposal to begin to know what to think. As the machine it applies
to is this one rather than one of my many test installations, and I have no
current sound system complaints, I won't be disturbing the sleeping dog.

I only mentioned TDE because I know Lisi uses it.

When I setup the machine I use I read a lot about the issue - the only
proposed work around was to enable/disable.
I played with alsa years ago to understand how it works, but last time I
checked the kernel driver docs I did not find this option. Anyway it is
worth trying. I just do not understand how this indexing works in the
different contexts, but I'll figure out.

As far as you have good driver it always works. I found out the key is to
tell the machine which is your audio card and which model it has.
Why being so frustrated?
The problem I guess is the variety of audio chips out there, some of which
are really cheep (and bad).
I always check the kernel driver doc - but this also changed recently and
got more confusing (at least the intel part)
I am not afraid of the "sleeping dog" - we are friends.

Yes, but you are on a public list and your comment is of no favor to TDE,
neither it is related to TDE in any way.

This isn't a public questions, private responses list, in spite of list
conformance with idiotic RFC 2822 do-not-munge policy. Private responses do
not get any benefit from peer review, nor show up in archive searches, where
they can benefit others than the OPs, among other reasons munging FOSS user
mailing lists makes more sense than not.

Lisi, the OP, is a TDE user with a $SUBJECT, as am I. Thus, our problems
could very well have a common FOSS root and/or FOSS solution to be assisted
in determining by some other FOSS list reader. This thread's OP even took the
trouble to say thank you for my reply.

Yes, I found it helpful. I agree that the fact that I use TDE could well have
been relevant, as is the fact that the whole thing is generically FOSS. I
almost included some TDE details from the beginning, but started with the
obviously Debian ones, and was then going to change list if it looked as
though TDE was relevant.

We get a lot on the list that is only relevant to GNOME.

I remember, back in the days when "programmed learning" was new,
picking up a novel where the chapters were designed to be read
in the order of the reader's own choosing. (Reader's rather than
readers'---I'm sure only the proof-reader ever read the entire book.)
Having flicked through it, my only decision if I bought it would be
to decide, after pulling it apart into its signatures, in which order
to use them as firelighters :)

Cheers,
David.

This is probably a silly question, but have you tried alsamixer?
