My sound card is Intel Broadwell HD audio for Dell Inspirion 15 3543. The sound quality on Debian Jessie seemed to be okay to me (I use Rhythmbox as music player, and VLC occasionally). Today, I used Windows for a while, and experienced far better and more dynamic sound quality on same earphone and for the same track (Rolling in the Deep :P). I have both alsamixer and pulseaudio installed. Can anyone help me out to improve sound quality? Regards Himanshu Shekhar

Hi Himanshu, Can you please provide more info regarding the Windows music app? Do you have any plugins or EQ enabled? Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. -- Pete Orrall pete@cs1x.com www.peteorrall.com "If there isn't a way, I'll make one."

No plugin or EQ. I would rather like to know, how to use EQ for Linux. :) Well, I tried using the same Dell Audio software I had once on Ubuntu that came pre-installed with the laptop, from Dell Ubuntu PPA (download the deb, named dell-wmi-dkms and manually install). However, the installation failed for dell-wmi on Jessie. > -- > Pete Orrall > pete@cs1x.com > www.peteorrall.com > "If there isn't a way, I'll make one." Regards, Himanshu Shekhar

Okay, if we can rule that out I would figure out exactly what sound chip your hardware's got and see if there are any known issues. It might be that jessie is too old. This looks like a good start: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/HDAGeneric It might just be easier to get a live cd/usb with the latest kernel and latest alsa and see if there's any difference. -- Cheers, Sven Arvidsson http://www.whiz.se PGP Key ID 6FAB5CD5

Or, you can manually set filters that mix audio. Just go to tools/effects and filters. Have fun! Usually soundcards expect the information to be presented as PCM. That is a digital representation of the analog sound information. However your music files are most likely MP3 or some other format. The conversion of these file formats to PCM is done in sofware. MP3 specially still has some patent issues which means that most likely the conversion in free software is different than in propietary software. Another possibility is that the windows software automatically applies a "profile" during the conversion based on the type of music (equalizer functionality). That can lead to the perception this music is "more dynamic". I would say you should try an equalizer on linux and see if you can shape your music output more to your liking. -H -- Henning Follmann | hfollmann@itcfollmann.com

The soundcard is Realtek ALC3234 with Waves MaxxVoice. Banshee has got an equaliser with a few useful presets. I do not have access to Windows, but I found that using different presets or adjusting the equaliser makes a marked difference in sound quality. After making some random hits, I finally landed on Clementine. It is one of the best music players I've experienced so far and it gives me perfect feel of the beats after little change in settings.
