#169621 — Truncating MPGs or MP4s

Hi folks,

There seem to be a number of video editing programs available, at
least according to Synaptic's lists.

I have a very simple need - I've got a LOT of VHS tapes to convert
before my last VCR dies. I have it all sorted except for one thing - I
have to play the tapes real time, so I leave them running. This means
the resulting files will have a chunk of 'dead space' at the end of
them if I'm not there when the video content finishes.

I just need to remove that dead space - doesn't matter to me whether I
do that on the MPG or after conversion to the MP4. I don't need all
the bells and whistles that most video programs are likely to have, I
just need to be able to see the video and then mark a point after
which everything will be deleted - in other words, a very SIMPLE video
editor.

Amy recommendations, please? 64-bit Debian testing, XFCE desktop,
plenty of CPU and RAM available.

Thanks,

I have used Avidemux and it is simple to use. The problem is it is not
in the official debian repositories but in the deb-multimedia repo.

I usually use avidemux for that, telling it to copy the audio and video
rather then reencode them. Then I do the transcoding with handbrake.

project-x should also be able to do that.

Yes it is. Should be in the debian-multimedia repo.

Useful info, thanks!

Project-x may be a bit more limited than ffmpeg and avidemux
though as
it doesn't support H.264 (disclaimer on
http://project-x.sourceforge.net/).

+1 for Avidemux as a GUI tool. To my knowledge it is the only gui
tool
in linux which allows simple truncation of files
without reencoding.
Last time I checked, Openshot, Pitivi and Kino couldn’t just
truncate
(copy) the streams, they always reencoded them. Apart from loss of
quality, this also means loss of time.

I also use the ffmpeg solution mentioned earlier. It’s simple and
effective if you don’t need frame accurate precision in
your timings.
Technically truncation can’t actually start or stop on just any
frame in
the video. Start and stop must be on a keyframe (one of the frames
encoded in full and not deduced from others, more on this here:
http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/doku.php?id=using:cutting).

I'm not sure how ffmpeg deals with the situation where the
timecodes you
specify don’t match actual keyframes. I suppose they shift the
start/stop time a bit earlier or later. It’s usually not a big
deal but
sometimes it matters. If you want full control over this,
avidemux’s gui
can help you set the trim markers to keyframes.

In case you don’t want to enable an extra repo just for avidemux,
it’s
fairly easy to compile it yourself. I followed the instructions
here:
http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/doku.php?id=build:install_2.6 The
gtk
gui crashes on my debian testing with xfce, but the qt one (which
is the
default) works just fine.

Victor

I have used kino for that quite a few times, mainly to edit out my shakes
when I should have been using a tripod to shoot a wedding. There are
others to be sure, but with a firewire card to address my now old Sony
digital hi-8 handi-cam, kino can also run the handi-cam, including
writeing the edited video back to the tape. Thats been tested, but I've
not figured out a reason I'd want to as the output is normally put in a
video CD or a DVD for distribution to the participants. In doing that,
some video quality is lost but the result on the viewers tv is still 2x
sharper than a vhs tape, competing with an s-vhs machine but with less
video noise. The handi-cam outputs 720x480. And it was new several
years before hi-def broadcasting began.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

If the command line puts you off you wouldn't want to use

 ffmpeg -ss 00:00:00 -t 00:50:00 -i input.mp4 -acodec copy -vcodec copy output.mp4

One of these years I'm going to try command line just to do it since
I've seen it mentioned a few times, mostly on accessibility lists for
persons with visual impairments.

Normally I use the fairly simple, fairly basic OpenShot for something
like this. BUT... It sounds like your files would be large. I a-sume
OpenShot could most likely handle something like that, but I don't
know yes or no because of no firsthand experience...

OpenShot is usually available in the most primary of package
resources. That was actually how I came to use it versus Avidemux. I
wanted one line and ONLY one line in my /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Using OpenShot helped me keep it that way... for now. :)

Have fun!

Cindy :)

I did my first programming course back in 1978 on ICL kit - I have a
passing familiarity with CLIs. :) I admit that it hadn't occurred to
me, I think this will be first on the list to try...

Thanks for the hints, Brian and everyone else.

I'd second this; it is a more direct way to ask libav to do the job, most of
the GUI tools will be essentially asking libav to do the same thing.

I would use any video player to check which are the dead sport and just use
ffmpeg and just copy option to not loose quality on re-encoding. Otherwise
openshot or cinerella for gui
