#168811 — Non-firefox browser?

Are there any browsers in Debian Jessie that are not dependent on
Firefox?

It seems everything has been replaced or is just a cover/skin/re-paint
of firefox.

Yes.

I don't know about an exhaustive list, but even ignoring text-mode
browsers, there are at least chromium (which is essentially Chrome) and
konqueror (which is Webkit-based). I used to know of a few others, but
I've forgotten their names just offhand, and I don't know how many of
them are still around in any case.

There's a bunch of webkit-based browsers you could use, I guess.

Here's a list of others: https://wiki.debian.org/WebBrowsers

dwb (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/dwb) seemed like it may be
promising, though it lacked some functionality I just couldn't bother
implementing myself.

I just added the line

deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ jessie-backports firefox-esr

to /etc/apt/sources.list , then after an apt-get update iirc it was
automatically set up to replace iceweasel.

Best regards

Michael

AIUI you no longer even have to do that. I gather that "# aptitude update"
and "# aptitude full-upgrade" (or equivalent) will now do the trick. I
gather that you need the "full-" bit ("dist-" I think in apt-get) in order to
get rid of all of Iceweasel.

I can't test this, because I went over to Firefox as soon as Debian officially
recommended doing so.

Add jessie-backports to your sources.list and do "apt update; apt
install firefox-esr" .

Jessie security is enough:

$ apt-cache policy firefox-esr

firefox-esr:
  Installed: 45.2.0esr-1~deb8u1
  Candidate: 45.2.0esr-1~deb8u1

Note iceweasel is being replaced by firefox-esr - which works for me.

The scripts to move from iceweasel -> firefox-esr work well and don't
lose bookmarks etc.

All the best,

Though if you used add-ons that had different versions between Iceweasel
and Firefox, like VimFX, you will need to reinstall them if they're not
compatible.

They seem to be running checks for that. Perhaps you get an offer of
automatic replacement now?

There are many. Among them are midori, epiphany-browser, dillo, netsurf
(mostly for text only). I do have all of these and more installed.

The most radically different text browser I've used and it's available in
debian was edbrowse. If you're afraid of the command line stay well
clear of edbrowse since if you don't you'll be in for massive culture
shock.

My two favorite non-firefox browsers are xombrero and qupzilla.

Xombrero used to be called xxxterm. Not sure what it was called in Jessie by
the time Jessie was released. I always have my sources.list set to "testing"
rather than any of the nicknames, so I'm never quite sure what a nicknamed
version of Debian had in its repositories when it was released.

Anyway, xombrero is a different kind of browser designed to be controlled
entirely from the keyboard. Depending on your preferences, it might work for
you. It's very fast.

Qupzilla is new to me. It got installed when I decided to drop Xfce and switch
to lxqt. It is extremely fast, maybe the fastest graphical browser I've seen
-- at least on my systems.

Hope you find something to suit you.
