Greetings all; I re-added the amd64 architecture to the architecture's in dpkg/synaptic, but the package -> force-version remains stubbornly ghosted, so I cannot fix any broken patckages that are preventing the install of any updates. So I try to have dpkg remove the amd64 aarchitecture, but now get a database is locked error. The system is working, quite stably, but I cannot update anything. A dpkg -C spits out about 60 files in error, all tagged :amd64. What are the steps I should take to fix this? The system is working, quite stably, but I Using aptitude I would command aptitude purge '~ramd64' and maybe aptitude purge '~c' which should remove leftover config files from packages previously removed. Then again dpkg --remove-architecture amd64 Regards, jvp. > cannot update anything. Some more explanations: these tilde-on-letter combinations are search patterns for aptitude. "~c" stands for packages already removed but not purged, there are some config files left on the system. See also "--purge --pending" in the man page of dpkg. So this does no harm if you don't intend to reinstall one of these packages. Just to list these sort of packages command aptitude search '~c' "~ramd64" addresses all packages for architecture amd64, "~i" addresses all installed packages. The patterns can be combined, for example aptitude search '~c~ramd64' Could you show what this command lists? You said aptitude search '~i~ramd64' didn't list any package, which would mean there is no amd64 package installed on your system. Could you also show the outcome of dpkg -l | grep ':amd64' ? Regards, jvp.

The aptitude on your system is an older version (on sid it is 0.8.1), maybe it hasn't the full architecture support. The dpkg output is reliable, I think. Since in the output of the dpkg command all amd64 packages have an "ii" at the beginning of the line, it shows that all your amd64 packages are installed correctly. Then, I'd like to see the output of dpkg -C You said it showed 60 package names in error all tagged :amd64. These are not shown in the list generated by "dpkg -l | grep ':amd64'". They should be taken care of first by purging them all together. I don't remember the output format. The idea is to generate a command to extract the package names from this and feed it to dpkg --purge. Regards, jvp. So I believe that I will clean up the "foreign" amd64 stuff if I can, following JVP's most helpfull guidelines so that updates can resume. Failing that, I have good backups courtesy of amanda so that I can reinstall and restore my data, like this email corpus of around 26 gigs. Only this time install the amd64 install, followed by a backup of this running kernel which will run the linuxcnc simulator. To that end, I'll next be collecting that iso and burning a couple copies so they will be ready should that path be needed. Thank you for the link Lisi, I believe it was helpful in showing me that at my age, I am finally in over my head, at least until tools can catch up with the concept and do it automatically on command. Multiple reboots expected of course. Completely separate issue, I just bought a new mouse, which if unused for a period of time shuts itself completely off! What a revolting development that is becoming! > > > maybe it hasn't the full architecture support. According to the required versions, it has, but I don't believe the wrappers to drive it all have all been created. Likely a WIP. In the meantime I have purged more than half the files that may be creating my broken packages hell, but which in synaptic, refuse to identify themselves in the broken packages list, it is, or was last night, clean. So synaptic itself isn't telling me the whole picture either. > > > The dpkg output is reliable, I think. He got 99 or 98 out of 99. Most of the theory was double dutch to me, and I did feel that I ought at least to know what my son was talking about, so I did the exam myself. The person teaching me said. "He is way ahead of you, and you know that you will never catch him up don't you, let alone overtake him? So I hope that that is not your aim." The first time I ever said to my son "I don't know darling, you will have to ask Jane Doe" he was around twenty months old. I think he may read this list. I don't think he has been told the first of those before - and he probably doesn't remember the second. Even Einstein won't have known everything. We two are still trying to learn. Let us hope we are succeeding, anyhow some of the time, so we are not yet brain-dead, merely not omniscient. Join the club, Gene. It's nice to have you on board. ;-) Omniscience is SO wearing. ;-) Lisi I have it on the best of authority - a local medical specialist - that no-one can live for ever, three score years and ten is man's allotted span, 83 is already 13 years more. Go away and shut up. Well, that last wasn't put _quite_ like that, only almost - but the rest is verbatim.

Go away and shut up. Well, that > last wasn't put _quite_ like that, only almost - but the rest is > verbatim. I may have had an advantage on you. My mother was slightly smarter than the average bear, and was the only girl in the class on aviation technology that was offered in 1929 at Des Moines Technical high school in Des Moines Iowa, state capital. By the time I was 5 I was reading nearly any book I could carry. I can also say that while she did not know the answers to all the questions a 5 to 8 year old could ask, she did know where the county library was, so I found myself reading high school level physics books by the time I was 7ish. Some of those questions haven't been fully explained yet, like what is gravity? It blew my young mind that my mother didn't know that! They've invented the Graviton is a transmission particle, but there are 2 schools of thought on it because the only way to measure its speed is by conflicting theories. One of course being that it cannot exceed C speed. But if you plug C speed into planetary orbital math, the orbital math predicts that our earth should have spiraled into the sun billions of years ago. The difference is the vector force direction because C speed puts that vector at the center of mass of the sun where we see it now, NOT where it was 8 minutes ago when that light left headed this way. And the orbital math results only agree with us still being here is if that vector points at the center of mass where it was 8 minutes ago. And that implies there is something that can travel 1,000,000x C speed at least. If we could turn gravity off and on we could measure this propagation velocity first hand and settle the argument, but thats a trick we haven't, despite all the Star Trek movies, mastered yet. Einstein couldn't merge that into a T.O.E. and Hawking spends most of his time thinking about extreme gravity and black holes, where C speed determines that we can't see a block hole, only infer its mass from the sub-luminal velocities of other stars orbiting it that we can measure. So its a question that I doubt will be answered in my remaining time. And there are brains at least 300 IQ points above whats left of mine that have spent decades playing what if games with it in the night when they can't sleep. The first letter denotes the package state, "p" stands for not installed. Second
letter is package selection state, "i" means selected for installation. The
meaning of the fields is in the man-page of dpkg, the meaning of the letters I
took from the aptitude docu.

No, since your task is to return to a pure i386 system. i386 packages don't
depend on amd64 ones.
Now, would you try to get rid of these 20 packages?
A list only of the package names should be doable by
dpkg -l | awk '/:amd64/ {print $2}'
and if the list looks o.k., now for the brave
dpkg --purge $(dpkg -l | awk '/:amd64/ {print $2}')
Does it work? Is "dpkg -C" now silenced?

No, dpkg cannot remove it, claiming the database is locked/busy this
after a fresh reboot, so I edited it back out of the arch file with
a text editor, restoring it to its original i386 only condition,
then had synaptic do a reload.

I see. Thanks.

Almost, one leftover I don't recall ever installing because I've never
used/played with tor, but I wind up with this, clipped from that
screen from the first failure of the above command:[wordwrap off]
Removing libavahi-common-data:amd64 ...
dpkg: warning: while removing libavahi-common-data:amd64, directory '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu' not empty so not removed
Removing libkeyutils1:amd64 ...
Purging configuration files for libkeyutils1:amd64 ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for ccache ...
Updating symlinks in /usr/lib/ccache ...
Then I repeated the command in case it would catch it the 2nd time thru:
root@coyote:/var/lib/dpkg# dpkg --purge $(dpkg -l | awk '/:amd64/ {print $2}')
dpkg: error: --purge needs at least one package name argument
Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !
root@coyote:/var/lib/dpkg# dpkg -C
The following packages have an unknown foreign architecture, which will
cause dependency issues on front-ends. This can be fixed by registering
the foreign architecture with dpkg --add-architecture:
torsocks use SOCKS-friendly applications with Tor
root@coyote:/var/lib/dpkg# dpkg --purge torscoks
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove torscoks which isn't installed
Humm, I can't spell excrement with my nose in it. :( Never was a flawless
speller. And these fingers don't always type what I think either.
root@coyote:/var/lib/dpkg# dpkg --purge torsocks
(Reading database ... 421142 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing torsocks ...
Purging configuration files for torsocks ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
And VOILA! Synaptic is happy and just "upgraded" 4 packages, no idea if
it was to satisfy the stuff I just nuked, or if they were true updates.
Point is, it works again. :)

This person: Jörg-Volker Peetz, who guided me thru this, deserves to
wear the Wizard hat from the Alley Oop cartoon, it is a well earned
honor. I know he labored to get the awk stuff to work correctly, and for
that, deserves a diabetic safe hand cooler, in glass, no alzheimers
creating alu, should he get to WV before I fall over the last time.

If you prefer dpkg, try dpkg --purge --pending Or heavier, using aptitude aptitude purge '~c' but this could try to remove also other automatically installed packages which are not needed by any other package. To get a list of such candidates use aptitude search '~g' "g" like garbage. Regards, jvp.
