Hi everyone.

I have an ultra wide monitor that supports 2560x1080.
While I have a Radeon 5450 graphic card, running Debian Sid, I only can get 1920x1080.
I installed firmware-linux-nonfree to get it running. So why isn't my complete resolution listed?
Also I experience some glitches while watching videos.

I have to mention that I can't install the proprietary driver from AMD website because of the following error:

<code>
    make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-4.5.0-2-amd64'

which package for the graphic adapter did you install.
Could you show us the contents of your Xorg.0.log (either
~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log)?

How is the monitor connected to the computer (VGA, HDMI, Display Port, ..)?

jvp.

But xserver-xorg-video-radeon would be the right driver to use. Now you're using
the much simpler vesa driver.

The Xorg.0.log file shows that X is searching for the ati driver (package
xserver-xorg-video-ati) which will then use the radeon driver from the
xserver-xorg-video-radeon package.
Try the ati package and if it fails or not, let's look into the contents of the
Xorg.0.log file of that again.

Let's look at this further after trying xserver-xorg-video-ati.

Here I'm clueless :-(

The log shows that the radeon driver is used, although also drivers are accessed
but unloaded later.
The radeon driver seems to work, even direct rendering.

There are no further warnings (WW) or errors (EE) in the log.

Do you see the mousepointer on the black screen? Maybe it's a problem with the
backlight? (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/backlight)

Did your setup work before?

Maybe, to test your setup you could use a Linux live CD.

Regards,
jvp.

Well let me tell you what happens at that time.
First I see a screen with resolution of something like 1280x960 (or
whatever) in my grub menu. Then I see something like 800x600 after
choosing Debian. Then after some loadings, the screen resolution changes
to something like 1920x1080. Then it starts blinking, and I can't type
anything there, even I can't use tty2 nor tty3. After about 60 seconds,
I can log into tty2 to use apt.

No.

Yes, while I was using Gforce.

Does the monitor enter some energy saving mode (indicated by some led light)
after the screen turns black?

Do you have some other monitor to test the computer setup?

Did you insert the AMD grahic card recently into your computer?

I suppose you checked the cabling etc.

No it doesn't, it just stays still.
> Do you have some other monitor to test the computer setup?
I have a CRT Samsung monitor. Not that I can get 1920x1080 on my current
monitor, if I use that monitor I can get it running too. But if I use
any drivers other than firmware-linux-nonfree, then the screen will be
black too (just tty)

Those are correct. But I have to mention that when the screen turns
black, before I hit Alt+CTRL+F2 to get tty2, I see this error on the
screen:
Invalid PCI ROM header signature: expecting SOMEHEX got 0xfffff

What GLX implementation are you using? If you still have e.g. the NVIDIA
GLX alternative selected, it wouldn't surprise me if you got results
like this.

To figure this out, look at the glx-alternative-* packages, and at the
output of 'update-alternatives --list glx'.

I use the Radeon drivers myself (open, not FGLRX), and I have
glx-alternative-mesa active (under the alternative name
'mesa-diverted').

I _think_ this should be handled automatically by the relevant driver
packages nowadays, but I can't swear to that, and if it's not then it
might be your problem.

Running that command gave me this output:
/usr/lib/mesa-diverted

Does it have anything to do with my previous GPU which was GForce?

Another question: could there still be some packages related to fglrx on your
computer?
Try
  dpkg -l | grep '^ii.*fglrx'

No, Just this one. But as I already mentioned in the thread, I was using a
GForce gpu before this one.

Just Gnome settings using display option. Also arandr doesn't show a
better resolution.

I've tried to remove every possible drivers. Currently I only have
radeon driver. I have aptitude, but I mostly use apt-get (can it cause
problems?)

Yes, this is strange. Did you try to fiddle with the setup of the monitor using
the buttons at the monitor? Something like scaling options?
I have no idea why xrandr doesn't show the native resolution.
The wiki of archlinux is a good documention. See "Adding undetected resolutions" on
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xrandr#Adding_undetected_resolutions

something like

  xrandr --newmode "2569x1080_66.7" 185.6 2560 2624 2688 2784 1080 1083 1093
1111 -hsync -vsync
  xrandr --addmode "2569x1080_66.7"
  xrandr --output HDMI-0 "2569x1080_66.7"

using information from your Xorg.0.log

Which one is running?
  uname -a

May I ask, which CPU you have?

No. It's just that I#m more familiar with aptitude CLI for package management,
then I would have commanded
  aptitude unmarkauto xserver-xorg-video-ati
  aptitude purge xserver-xorg-video-all
  aptitude purge '~c'

The last command purges remains of removed packages.

I've already tried this. Now that I can load the proper driver, I tried
it again, and after choosing the created mode using Gnome Display, I
faced a black screen saying "No Signal".

Are there some relevant messages in dmesg or .xsession-errors ?

That I interpret as switching off of the GPU.
What are the specifications of the graphic card regarding maximal electric
energy consumption? On the web I found something like around 160 Watts.
Can your power supply unit in the computer deliver that?

You said in another e-mail that your computer worked with Windows but maybe the
driver is better with energy saving.

I use the kernel parameter "radeon.dpm=1" for saving some energy with my GPU.
In the file /var/log/dmesg there appears then a lot of output regarding dpm
(lines containing [drm]).

No, I just asked because some CPUs have builtin GPUs.

That shouldn't be necessary with an up to date kernel. Power management
is automatic.

I don't know why, but I can't find .xession-errors or I don't have such file in my system.

I think it can, It can deliver 800 watts.
As I mentioned in the other email, I can get 2560x1080 using DVI cable,
but with very very poor quality. Can this all be related to cable?

When I use DVI cable I see thi error on my _monitor_:

The screen is not currently set to the recommended resolution.
A DVI Dual-Link cable is provided.
Other DVI cables may be used, but they must be Dual-Link DVI cables.
Otherwise the video will not display or have poor quality.

I'm clueless.
The suggestion of Felix Miata to ask on a specialized list is the best to do, I
think.

jvp.

Why not try with older kernel that works with the driver?

regards
