I would like to change the user desktop displays to 1960x108 from 3800x 2400 as the font is not readable. The setup for root is appropriately sized. So I copied the files from: /etc/xdg/openbox/ lsxde-rc.xml, menu.xml, rc.xml and autostart to /home/me/.config/openbox Then changed owner CHOWN to the user for each. Then rebooted. There was not change for the user. I looked through these files and found that none of them store the 1960x1080 the root is using. What are the files I need to copy over, or what do I need to do?

Here is an example, which is the way mine worked to use two monitors: Added to autostart: ~/.screenlayout/ext-acer-dual-monitor.sh The ext-acer-dual-monitor.sh contains: #!/bin/sh xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1904x0 --rotate normal -- Charlie Kravetz Linux Registered User Number 425914 [http://linuxcounter.net/user/425914.html] Never let anyone steal your DREAM. The challenge I have with changing the font is there are many places where this seems must be done. For example, I can set the desktop font but not the panel font nor the fonts of the pop ups. And the text is not legible; although the text during the boot process is quite large. As I am building this, I reboot a lot, so I don't like any waiting. So once I get the desktop lined up, I will be looking for a solution resolution during booting.

So once I get the desktop lined up, I will be looking > for a solution resolution during booting. I just did a fresh Stretch install with LXDE to confirm nothing's changed lately. Recent Intel video driver versions are picking up video= from cmdline to make the Xorg default. I typically include video=1440x900@60 on kernel cmdline with a 1680x1050 display. With Intel video driver, this makes X start in 1440x900 unless overridden by xorg.conf* or xrandr. With this fresh installation, I put 'xrandr --dpi 108 --output VGA1 --mode 1680x1050' in a startup script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ to get LXDE to start in the display's native 1680x1050 mode and using an artificial DPI to enlarge Xorg objects (including text) 26.5% (1.125^2; 108/96 ^2) over default. Whether ATI or Nouveau drivers are picking up video= from kernel cmdline I've not checked lately. Nevertheless, if you want to run some mode other than your display's native mode without needing to fiddle with any DE's settings, it remains possible using xrandr as I did (or as Charlie suggested via ~/), or setting PreferredMode in /etc/X11/xorg.conf*. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Thank you all for the info. That is challenging to understand. But I see xrandr being used and Xfce (which looks like is needed to get xrandr). So I: apt-get install Xfce4 with no errors. I did not include any of the added packages. I ran xrandr and selected a different configuration since I already had 1920x1080. I picked 1680x1050. There was not immediate change. So I rebooted. I could no longer login as the user that I installed Xfce under. But I can log in under root. (This happend when I tried this same thing on a desktop a couple months ago, I never figured out how it failed - and histry repeats what I don't remember!) I am not sure where to go from here. What I would like is to recover that user session. If I recall for the desktop, I could log on through a terminal which implied that I broke something related to the display managerm. But I was never able to recover that user, so I just copied my data to a new directory, removed the user, added the user again and brought my data files back in. But that does not solve the problem of how to get Xfce to work. Any suggested steps?

xfce4 reports the display to be eDP1. There is now a ~/.screenlayout with a file cDP1_1960x1080.sh with the one line xrandr --output HDMI1 --off cdP1 --mode 1960x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal This line was generated by the arandr. On rebooting, it comes up in 3840x2160. Openning up arandr, it shows this same configuration. To get bootup screen in this mode, I used xfce4-session-settings (Sessions and Startup) | Application Autostart and the selected +Add and pointed it at the same location as above. But now that I read it for the 3rd time, it is supposed to bring up the script at log on. On rebooting, it still comes up in 3840x2160. To change the DPI, I used the xfce4 appearance | settings and changed the dpi from 90 to 106. There was no immediate change. So I logged off and back on. There was no change. Maybe it wasn't enough. So I changed it from 106 to 300. Still no change. Since neither of these a being implemented and they show up where they are supposed to be, I must be missing something. I would appreciate any suggestions.

If a change from 1960 to 1920 does not help, try putting that xrandr command in /etc/X11/ somewhere. Felix, Thank you for the post. You are correct, the 1960 was just an email typo. I don't see how/where to put the display resolution file or command line in /etc/X11/. The contained files say they are not executed. I don't know if any of the directories would automatically be executed or when. What would be an appropriate way to include the resolution command in /X11? There are three files (plus one in installer directory). They are Xorg.0.log, *.1.log, and *.2.log; 2 being newer than 1. Before you try that, I fail to notice evidence you tried my 2015-11-01 22:11 -0500 thread suggestion to append the video mode you want X to use to your kernel cmdline. Why not try that first if you didn't already? video=1920x1080@60 You can do that on the fly by editing in your default grub menu stanza at boot time. If it works, make an appropriate change to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub, then run update-grub and reboot. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Felix, I was not able to find out how to add a parameter during the boot process. I put the video=1920x1080@60 in the 'default' line, update-grub, update-grub2 and rebooted. There was no change. Followup for previous typo: While the shell command had the correct designation '1920', I found file names using '1960'. I changed all of them and rebooted, no change. Also have: ~/.config/autostart# cat lxrandr-autostart.desktop [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=LXRandR autostart Comment=Start xrandr with settings done in LXRandR Exec=sh -c 'xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080' OnlyShowIn=LXDE During a Xfce session, I changed the DPI from 96 to 300 and did not observe any difference in the display. I am wondering if my expectations are misaligned. Reading Xfce 'How toos', I see many descriptions where people build a disktop widget to click to change settings as if they have not implemented an automated method - which I prefer.

I am wondering if my expectations are misaligned. Reading Xfce 'How toos', I see many descriptions where people build a disktop widget to click to change settings as if they have not implemented an automated method - which I prefer. Traditional xorg.conf and xrandr commands should be able to work as always. Let's not mix up trying to use them with trying to get your DE to do them (which amounts to overriding if working as designed). IOW, don't change multiple things at once and expect to know why whatever is or isn't happening is or isn't happening. You started trying to use xrandr, so let's stick with xrandr methodology until we either find it can't work, or get it to work - but only after we've finished determining whether the kernel cmdline methodology could work for you. I just tried here to get 1440x900 used by Xorg via kernel cmdline on a 1680x1050 display, and it looks like the Betsy and Wheezy 3.16 kernels may not always be passing the cmdline video= mode to Xorg 1.16.4 (Betsy) or 1.12.4 (Wheezy) as is done with other recent kernels and/or X server versions. It does work as I expect with openSUSE 13.2's kernel 3.16.7 and X server 1.16.1. All of these using VGA connections, not DP. When I did switched from the native 1680x1050 screen to a native 1920x1080 (HDTV) screen, and DVI port PC out to HDMI TV in, xrandr --dpi 108 --output HDMI1 --mode 1280x720 in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95setup produced the desired 1280x720 mode. So, if putting video=1920x1080@60 on kernel cmdline ultimately is not working for you, try putting: xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95setup (with ~/.config/autostart hidden, removed or otherwise not available). As 3840x2160 is usually only supported by the Intel gfxchips' DP outputs, and their VGA and/or DVI ports are limited to 1920x1200, you could try connecting with a cable other than DisplayPort to produce the lower than native resolution you want automatically without any need for software configuration. Exactly which distro are you using? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. I am using jessie. Here is my experiment plan: Goal: Now that grub update ~works, see how to get xrandr to work. Method: Save /etc/default/grub as the latest rev. Reinstantiate the latest version. Save /etc/grub.d/00_header as the latest rev. Reinstantiate the latest version. Run update-grub2 Follow Felix's tests: -------------------------------------- Perform the tests, note the results. -------------------------------------- If the xrandr works, keep it, and keep the two instantiated versions of: /etc/default/grub /etc/grub.d/00_header Then save a copy of each as the latest rev. If the xrandr does not work, Reinstatiate the latest version of /etc/default/grub (with 'payload') Reinstatiate the latest version of /etc/grub.d/00_header (with 'payload') Run update-grub2 As I often get lost, I like to have a bread crum trail to get back to a known location.

Felix, Here is an interesting twist. I have reverted both grub and 00_header to the original (no 1920x1080 parameters) and executed update-grub2, and rebooted. The desktop comes in at 1920x1080. Currently, the only artifacts directing 1920x1080 are the xrandr scripts in: /home/user4/.config/autostart/eDP1_1920x1080.sh.desktop /home/user4/.screenlayout/eDP1_1920x1080.sh It would seem the grub functionality triggered something that xrandr did not.

This is interesting. It is persistent for the user this was setup under. The other users have not changed to 1920x1080. Note, root has 1920x1080 desktop from the original session shell command. Note 2, the boot paramters for 1290x1080 have been removed.

>> Pastebin your current /boot/grub/grub.cfg Pastebin means upload the information to http://paste.debian.net/ or http://pastebin.com/ or http://paste.opensuse.org/ or http://paste.ubuntu.com/ or equivalent, or to your own personal web space, and put a link thereto in your mailing list reply. Pasting logs and configs into email puts it wasting space in the mailing list archive forever. Pastebinning is temporary, a week or month or whatever the particular paste host is configured for. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
