Subjectmake system boot straight to browser connection
Message-ID<qh8Yh-6CS-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
I want to setup a system so that when the power button is pushed on
the PC, the system connects to the internet and starts a browser
without a login or any other intervention by the user.

There are no security issues.

Is this doable?

What DE, if any, are you using? This could easily be done in TDE, so probably
in at least some others.

Certainly. The term for this is "Kiosk Mode". There are many tutorials
on the web if you include that in your search terms :)

Definitely doable. I do it every day. Set up my computer for autologin,
open browser to page wanted. Save session in Xfce. Every time the
computer is restarted, it comes up, logs in, starts firefox.

How to do an autologin? In a DE independent way?

http://manpages.debian.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=autologin&apropos=1
gave no relevant links.

A Google search gave only decade old or DE related links.

I currently use Mate, but exploring other desktops(avoiding Gnome
3!!!;}.
I'd like something similar to autoexec.bat from DOS/CPM days.

I've used runit for such things successfully, most recently for starting
kodi at startup on my HTPC.

apt-cache show runit has as part of its output:

runit service supervision can run under sysv init or replace the init
system completely. Complete init replacement requires some manual
configuration described in the supplied documentation.

So the standard systemd init system needs replacing to get autologin in
a DE independent way? Technically you might be correct but are you
serious? It doesn't seem very elegant.

With sysvinit, all you need to do is drop a line or two into
/etc/init.d/rc.local - to set up the environment, su to the appropriate
user, then start a browser. What's the big deal?

Replace the init system when nodm is available just to get autologin?
Madness.

runit provides service supervision it can run under sysv init *OR*
replace the init system.

I can describe my config in more detail if interested.

Yes. You've repeated what I quoted from 'apt-cache show' without adding
why changing one's init system to get a simple thing like autologin is
at all beneficial to most users.

Not necessary.

Runit does not require one change one's init system. That is why is
states it can run under sysv init ****OR**** replace the init system.

Simply installing runit does not replace the init system.

What version are you running? Brian is assuming Jessie, I think. You appear
to be assuming Wheezy or earlier.

Correct. So how does simply installing it allow an autologin to X?

As a matter of interest. From runit(8):

  DESCRIPTION
runit must be run as Unix process no 1.

  root@jessie:~# runit
  - runit: fatal: must be run as process no 1.

Well, one has to configure it.

In /etc/inittab add a line like

SV:123456:respawn:/usr/sbin/runsvdir-start

then create a run script for firefox (.e.g /etc/sv/firefox/run)

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/xinit /usr/bin/firefox

then create a symlink fro /etc/sv/firefox to /etc/service

more info is at http://smarden.org/runit/.

Thank you for the detail. I'm sure it works under sysvinit but systemd
doesn't use /etc/inittab.

I received two suggestions, neither suitable:
   1. nodm was recommended by the ??? who has publicly stated
that he ignores
      how I phrase my questions.
   2. runt was also suggested. I chased down a series of links
but didn't see
how to apply it to my preferences.

Prior to my post I had done a web search for "autologin". I did
another with [I assume] slightly different criteria. I suspect
"DE independence" may not be achievable.

Is this an in depth technical analysis of the unsuitability of nodm or a
rewriting of history? :)

From

 http://www.enricozini.org/sw/nodm/

nodm is an automatic display manager which automatically starts an
X session at system boot. It is meant for devices like smartphones,
but can be used on a regular computer as well, if the security
  implications are acceptable.

Your suspicions are unfounded.
