Subjectquestions about debian installer prompts re: iwlwifi firmware
Message-ID<qc1up-245-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Greetings!

I am trying to install Debian on a Dell620 with USB stick media. When
the installer tried to configure the network software, it asked for an
iwlwifi firmware file.

I put the file on another USB stick, then tried two things:

1. put the firmware USB stick in another slot before booting. The
installer did not recognize when it asks for the iwlwifi file, i.e.,
no success.

2. put the firmware USB stick in another slot when installer requested
the firmware. Same result as 1, i.e., no success

2. replaced the install USB with the firmware USB when the installer
requested the firmware. After Installer configured the network, I
replaced the firmware USB with the installer USB. the installer died
when it tried to partition the disk with message that it can't read
the install media, i.e., no success.

MY QUESTIONS

How do I get the installer to load the firmware file?

What is the reason for the problem in the installer prompts?

Regards,

Tom

P.S. I found what i think is a solution to my installation problem,
but I suspect that it's more complicated then necessary and that the
debian-user list folks have a better one.

Tom, I regret no one has answered your question yet, for it is one that
has bothered me in the past. In lieu of an answer, I've had to string an
ethernet cable to the machine, install the OS and then the wifi firmware
and configure the network interface, and then reboot without the cable.

I would like to add that there is also iso with non free drivers on
debian.org. Just check if your hardware is included. Basically most
hardware is included but one more check never matters.

I'm not really surprised. The OP's PS says he's found a solution.
What that is might help us determine what was wrong originally.
Why should we have to trot out what's already documented in the
debian-installer manual, and then engage in a guessing game?

Sometimes people pose problems without revealing all the necessary
info because they don't realise what might help. It's always better
for them to be specific about what they wanted to do and what they
actually did.

But why deliberately withhold information?

Cheers,
David.

I had this problem a while ago, but I can't remember how I solved it.

The firmware packages or files have to be in either the root directory,
or a directory named /firmware. Also, the USB has to be FAT32 formatted.

You can ignore the firmware, you won't be able to use wifi. However, you
can complete the installation process and then download the firmware and
install it after you reboot it successfully.
