#163152 — Unreadable xmessage (sid)

FromThierry Rascle <thierr26@free.fr>

SubjectUnreadable xmessage (sid)
Message-ID<qRBqG-6gt-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi list,

xmessage does not work properly any more on my sid system. The window
is displayed as expected, it has a working okay button, but the actual
message is not readable. It could be that the message is displayed in
the background color, making it invisible.

I have a custom .Xresources file. Removing it does not solve the issue.

I have made a capture of the window:
http://thierr26.free.fr/img/broken_xmessage.png

Does anyone experience the same issue or have any clue about what is
happening ?

I guess a very recent package upgrade caused the problem but I am
unable to tell which one. xmessage is provided by package x11-utils
which has not been upgraded recently.

I'm using xmonad as my only window manager and desktop environment. My
other applications are working properly.

Thierry

I have seen this a couple of times. Normally, rebooting fixes it. Yes,
I know, Linux, reboot not needed. I just don't know the right commands
to make it work without the reboot.

In this case, rebooting does not fix it.

One simple thing you might try is selecting the text in the xmessage
box:

 - does it become visible then?
 - independently: can you paste it elsewhere?

Thus you might confirm (or rule out) color/font issues.

It was even simpler than that: slightly enlarging the window makes the
message visible.

For a reason I don't understand (related to the font ?), the xmessage
window now opens with a dimension which is slightly too small and this
makes the text totally invisible and unselectable.

I can work around that by using the -geometry option in the xmessage
command line and requiring a sufficient dimension:

xmessage -geometry 700x68+300+600 "My message"

Thank to all for your help.

This could be a stray geometry option in the X11 resources. You can try to
look at the output of xrdb -query, and compare to what happens on a blank
X11 server.

Then it does not seem to be the cause of the problem.

I don't know how to entirely blank the X11 server. Removing my
custom .Xresources makes the output of xrdb -query almost empty but it
does not fix the issue.

The output of xrdb -query after removing my custom .Xresources is:
*customization: -color
Xpdf*fileFilterStyle: filter_hidden_files

Regards.

BTW: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=745492
rsyslog no longer by default log to /dev/xconsole
