#162575 — Audio and HDMI port not working on Jessie

SubjectAudio and HDMI port not working on Jessie
Message-ID<qNchc-3mS-21@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hello,
I've just installed Jessie on my Laptop (Dell inspiron 5000 Series)
and unfortunally
audio card and hdmi port are not working.

Regarding hdmi port, from lspci I see:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 1916 (rev 07)
01:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Sun
XT [Radeon HD 8670A/8670M/8690M] (rev 81)

>From dmesg I see the following error message:
[ 15.064289] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[ 15.064330] [drm:radeon_pci_probe] *ERROR* radeon kernel
modesetting for R600 or later requires firmware-linux-nonfree.

Instead regarding the audio, I've made all checks that dpkg bot suggested:
- user is in audio grou
- unmute channels
- speakers are on
- pulseaudio is started

I have no idea how to fix these issues,
Please, any help and advice is appreciated.

Thanks

First, install firmware-linux-nonfree.

Ensure that you have the contrib and non-free repositories enabled in your
sources list, then (or equivalent with your preferred package handler):

# aptitude update
# aptitude install firmware-linux-nonfree

I always install firmware-linux-free at the same time if it is not already
installed.

Everything might now be fine. If not, reboot to restart everything. If stil
not, come back again.

He might fire up alsamixer to be sure the card is not muted. :) Ric

Yes, I realised that that might not be automatically understood as I clicked
on "send". But I thought, Oh well, if he comes back and hasn't checked such
things, we can always suggest checking. ;-)

If the HDMI port is handled by the radeon card, it won't work until the
driver and firmware works, and only if it is supported by the driver in
jessie.

The message above might be something related to having two GPUs:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/457391/radeon-ring-0-test-failed-on-boot-ubuntu-14-04

Does the laptop have something like that?

I'm almost sure that my laptop have an hybrid card, I've already found
this solution on google
but I don't have
/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
also I didn't find something like "Enable GPU switching"
in bios settings

For the archives, it would be nice to know what the solution is.

Unfortunally, I didn't found a solution that works on Jessie.

I recall an advise to disable this in the bios, so linux finds the normal
audio first - at least for my Dell e5440
You could try also the latest kernel 4.3.3 or something alike.

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT DRAM Controller (rev 0b)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0b)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller (rev
0b)

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller (rev
04)

Bios is Dell A10

Well, I've installed firmware-linux-nonfree, restarted the system, and boom.
