Greetings all;

Trying to find a web browser that actually works here. iceweasel has
been so emasculated that it asks about flash everytime, bringing up a
requester that has a button labeled "allow and remember", but it doesn't
remember, you have to do it for every flash presented. Half of the time
you click on it, the site has timed out, so you hit reload hoping you
can click the ok quick enough to make it work THIS time. Usually it
doesn't, so you never get to read or see that story.

And some news sites stories links are totally ignored, and some get
a "request entity to large" whatever the heck that is.

So I installed googles chromium, but it crashes and you have to use the
reload button, hundreds of times a day.

Konqueror is as emasculated as iceweasel.

So I downloaded the vivaldi-beta deb, and tried to use apt-get to
install, but that spit out several dozen pages of E: lines and didn't.

So I stepped into the deb with mc, and copied its contents to the
directories it would have been put in, even ran the postinst thing.
Didn't run from a cli.

Poking around in the installed stuff, I find an invalid link
in /opt/vivaldi-beta/libwidevinecdm.so to /opt/google/libwidevinecdm.so,
on checking that I find I don't have it, as the google stuff in /opt is,
and I quote "/opt/google/fucked-google" which is an empty directory!

Does anyone have a clue what that is all about? googles idea of an
easter egg that disappears if you register chromium which I assume turns
it into chrome?

Comments please, and what browser are you all using that doesn't hassle
the user to death, it Just Works, like firefox did 3 years ago.

Thanks all;

Cheers, Gene Heskett

Just remove flash-block plugin. :) Ric

Either go into tools/addons to disable it or use synaptic to see if you
installed the package. That should do the trick. :) Ric

Apparently I don't have any addons installed, all it shows me are the get
addons choices. I have also looked thru the about:config screen without
finding anything that looks suspect.

Best thing I have found is a fork of firefox called Pale Moon. It uses
some of the plugins and extensions from firefox, but around version 25.
I installed it over a month ago, and have not had a crash since then.

Downloaded and installed the installer to my /home directory. On running
it I am unable to progress beyond the download of the tar.bz2, which I
have now done twice because after the download, the installer can't find
it!

Why? Because it asks for my sudo password, and when iceweasel downloads
it, iceweasel is running as a sudo root, and puts the download
in /root/Downloads. It cautions about running the installer as root in
the readme's it showed me a few times. I have no access to the tarball
as me, so whats next?

Thank you.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

Throw that installer back in your /home. Run it as non-root, move the
first window out of the way, and click on install.

I have done that, about 6 times now, it opens no other windows UNTIL I
have given it my sudo passwd.

Since I have 2 copies of it sitting in /root/Downloads I think I'll have
a root mc session move one of them back and if needed change the perms.
Then look at it and see if I can do it without that broken script. Or
better yet, edit the script if I can see whats wrong.

Thanks.

IMO whoever wrote that script needs to take another look at it since they
do NOT want root to install it.

No, they are not the same thing. There is chromium, which is a Debian
package and Open Source, and Google Chrome, which is proprietary and Just
Works (most of the time).

I find that Flash on Iceweasel and Google Chrome both work on Wheezy for
almost everything. I don't use Iceweasel a lot because of all the security
issues.

The latter. From its about screen:

Version 37.0.2062.120 Built on Debian 7.6, running on Debian 7.9 (281580)

It was updated a few weeks back, which I had hoped would fix the
crashing, but it made zero diff in that regard.

Yes flash generally works, if you can get past that damned requester fast
enough. But when you don't respond, most sites that count clicks just
ignore you. cbsnews being the worst, if the adv isn't seen, then you
can't see the story either.

I just don't get this at all. You must have something set somewhere asking
for this behaviour. Flash just plays.

I am loath to install software by circumventing the Apt package system
-- doing so has destabilized my systems more times than I can count.
For me, the path of least resistance is Debian stable with minimal
customization.

Regarding IceWeasel on Wheezy, the default installation didn't seem to
include support for Flash. My guess is that the warning messages come
from a JavaScript library (on the web server, or other Internet server)
that detects the absence of an add-on to deal with the relevant MIME
type. Installing the following Debian package makes the warnings go
away and allows me to watch videos on YouTube:

     browser-plugin-gnash

Well, slashdot can crash chrome just sitting there on the front page,
presumably when an attempt is made to load some off-my-screen bit of
slashdot.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/armed-militia-takeover-oregon-debate-meaning-of-terrorist/
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-marshal-south-dakota-shoots-kills-south-carolina-murder-suspect/
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-quiet-power-of-meditation/
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/activists-target-gun-makers-with-unload-your-401k/
Thats 4 that give this:
Error 413 Request Entity Too Large, purported from the varnish cache
server, whatever the heck that is.

http://freedomoutpost.com/2016/01/isis-to-activate-thousands-of-sleeper-cells-in-2016-to-destabilize-the-west/
There I found a flash, tried to play it, clicked on the update now
button. it went thru the download of a 32 bit version in a tar.gz,
supposedly saving it in ~/Downloads. This is the only flash file in
Downloads:
-rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene 5979889 Aug 25 2013
flashplayer_11_sa.i386.tar.gz
I have unpacked it and installed it several times, no effect.

Thanks.

All five played fine in Google Chrome. The last three played fine in
Iceweasel. The first two had a large blank space at the top in Iceweasel,
but otherwise played fine.

I have flashplugin-nonfree installed, not gnash, which I have found
unsatisfactory.

Some of it did take a while to download.

Had you thought of actually installing Iceweasel from the repositories? You
might find it worked better, as well as updating better.

I nuked all the gnash and lightspark stuff, then reinstalled iceweasel.
Some of the flash interference is still there, but when I click on the
allow, every site but one worked.

I am still getting the request entity too big errors from cbsnews, but
the rest seems to be working generally better.

Testing IceWeasel 38.5.0 on a fresh install of debian-7.9.0-amd64-xfce,
I see a web page with lots of text and images. I do not see any error
messages.

I see a pop-up/ overlay for ~10 seconds, then I see the web page.

I see the web page.

Did you click on something to produce that error message?

I see the web page.

> There I found a flash, tried to play it,

Following the paragraph "Baghdadi added: ...", I see a grayed area with
the text "A plugin is needed to display this content". Clicking on it
has no effect.

If I browse to YouTube, and click on the top video "Coldplay - Birds
(Official video)", it plays. Testing two others, they work fine. Note
that I did not need to install browser-plugin-gnash, so YouTube is
likely detecting what IceWeasel supports OOTB and sending a suitable
video stream.

I think you've boogered your machine. Put in another system drive (or
USB stick), do a plain vanilla install of Wheezy with Xfce, take an
image, and then try IceWeasel.
