Hello,
I wrote to the clawws-mail mailing list some time ago about problems
like in the quoted text below:

They suggested that I ask on the list (debian), does anyone else get
this problem, especially with a non-claws-mail non-web-site email client?
Does debian-user do anything special to their emails?

Thanks, David

I read this list with Gnus via Gmane, and the message you quoted
displays correctly.

Not that I'm aware of.

Cheers,
      Sven

Looks like a locales/charset issue. I'm on claws, and that message
displays correctly for me. If I look at the message source, I see what
you quoted, so it looks as if your claws is displaying ASCII instead of
UTF-8.

I have 'Options->Character encoding' set to Automatic, maybe you have
7bit ASCII selected.

Hi,

these two headers tell what's going on:

> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"
> > Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

The character set is UTF-8 and the encoding tries to avoid
any byte value that is likely to be modified while the mail
is on its way.
See
  http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc1341/5_Content-Transfer-Encoding.html
  5.1 Quoted-Printable Content-Transfer-Encoding

It seems that your mail client (or the one you got a quote from)
did not convert the bytes back to UTF-8.
Just enter any of the "=XX=XX" sequences into Google.

"=C2=A0" is my old friend NBSP:
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-breaking_space
"Sa=C5=A1a_Jani=C5=A1ka" is "Sasa_Janiska" with haceks on the "s".

Your own mail is declared as
  Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
so that a correct mail client should not translate the "=C2=A0"
when displaying it.

Mine are sent as
  Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
but debian-user forwards them as
  Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

I hope it does the necessary conversions. Let's see now.
I send it as "8bit" to myself and to the list ...

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

Hi,

test results are in.

My own mail came as:
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
with the quoted mail address as
> "Sa=C5=A1a_Jani=C5=A1ka" is "Sasa_Janiska" with haceks on the "s".

The copy from debian-user@lists.debian.org came with
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
and the quoted mail address
> "Sa=3DC5=3DA1a_Jani=3DC5=3DA1ka" is "Sasa_Janiska" with haceks on the "s"=

I.e. the list mail server converted each "=" to "=3D", except
the last

My alpine mail client displays both as
"Sa=C5=A1a_Jani=C5=A1ka" is "Sasa_Janiska" with haceks on the "s".
I.e. it kept the "8bit" text as in the mailbox file and converted
the "=3D" in "quoted-printable" back to "=".

(This mail must look very confusing on a client which does not
convert "quoted-printable" back to 8 bit.
If so: convert equalsign+"3"+"D" to equalsign.)

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

I use claws-mail here in both Sid and Jessie. I do not get those
characters with them.
