Channel 4 doesn't work with HTML5. And I don't want it for a work computer.
It is therefore completely irrelevant to my presented problem.

It does not work with Chromium and Iceweasel and the latest flash-plugin
from here. I see the first frame of the video, but it does not stream.
No errors.

I think this means you cannot watch channel4 from outside the UK.

I've also tested it without flash, then you get a "flash upgrade
requiered" error.

Maybe you should try an older version of flash, if you want to see this
site. I've seen in the past that is sometimes a solution.
Simply replace the libflashplugin.so you are using with an older one.
But then you know your security is not OK.

You did not give the information "Channel 4 doesn't work with HTML5"
before. Without this information it was relevant. I don't like the way
you write.

I think I go away from this discussion. I am interested in the question
"deb-multimedia or not". Not really in "how to get channel4 working in
the UK".

That is what I have been saying all along, that you have kept contradicting.

Probably not. That is why I had not given the URL.

I have it working. Why would I touch it at all?

We agree on something! I don't like the way you write either.

Bad way of thinking. I think you will have problems again. Your
flashplugin does not become updates now, I guess. Iceweasel will refuse
to use it after some time.

Debian packages are system-wide solutions, not only for a specific user.
You are using now a solution in your homedirectory.

It will work when you update it, or let some script or program update
it. Maybe it can update itself, in your homedir it has write-permission.

It overrules system-wide solutions like flashplugin-nonfree or the
package from deb-multimedia.

With regards,
Paul van der Vlis.

yayyyy!
I got a working solution! :) Install Google Chrome.
Chromium doesn't support flash and many other stuff, while Google Chrome is
not available directly in debian repository.
Download Google Chrome from https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/
and then run the following commads

sudo apt-get install gconf-service libgconf-2-4 libnspr4 libnss3
libpango1.0-0 libappindicator1 libcurl3
sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

*solution from http://okomestudio.net/biboroku/?p=2583

There might be some ethical issues from the FSF and DFSG rules but at
present one might need to get his/her task done.
Happy Browsing!

Yes, it is great solution to the general problem. (If you are not a purist.)
Unfortunately it didn't solve my specific one.

Note that you could install pepperflashplugin-nonfree from the Debian
repositories. From the description:

"This package will download Chrome from Google, and unpack it to make
the included Pepper Flash Player available for use with Chromium."

I, too, have found that it is a great solution to the general problem,
but unfortunately it doesn't solve this specific one either.

But mind you, I tried it with Chrome in Windows7 with VirtualBox, but,
interestingly, I encountered exactly the same problem.
I'm beginning to wonder whether there could be something faulty at
Channel4's side.

This makes no sense. It is of no moment to me that you do not approve. We
have already established that. I am a pragmatist, you a purist.

If you use flashplayer-mozilla from deb-multimedia, then you get updates
automatically. Conflicts are avoided by pinning the deb-multimedia
repository.

I think this is complex to do right.

My experience: deb-multimedia in sources.list gives problems.
See: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/FAQ#Common_issues

When I need a package from deb-multimedia, I use wget and dpkg.

I saw that, thanks. I prefer to manage updates through APT. Each to his

I've been using Flash from deb-multimedia for years without issue (on
stable releases, I grant you). I use the following pinning:

Package: *
Pin: release o=Unofficial Multimedia Packages
Pin-Priority: 100

You prefer to get updates from a place, what gave many problems in the past.

I don't know what this is doing, do you?

I think you will have many packages on your system what are coming from
deb-multimedia. Maybe that's what you want, no idea.

I think the people from deb-multimedia are doing their best to make good
packages. But I think Debian is too complex to mix with a repo like
deb-multimedia with many packages. Maybe you don't have problems with
flash, but I think your system is not "rock solid" anymore.
And what does deb-multimedia bring you for that?

With regards,
Paul van der Vlis.

Yes. When a package is available in both debian and deb-multimedia, the
former is always preferred.

Not so. See above.

The system is no longer 'rock solid' as soon as you install any
third-party software, be it via flashplayer-mozilla or
flashplugin-nonfree or anything else.

Both packages use the same source from Adobe. Why specifically should
one be less solid than the other when it comes to watching flash video?

The point I was trying to make above neither is no more or less 'rock
solid' than the other.

I tried pepper-flash for chromium but it didn't work..neither did
deb-multimedia.
The only thing which worked was Google Chrome and it really works.

Not for everything. None of them works for everything. You just have to mix

For your situation with 4od you wouldn't want pepper flash.

I was pointing out the apparent contradiction in advising the Debian
archives over the deb-multimedia ones and not taking it yourself. It
was not really that important to mention. :)

It still disturbs me a little that Lisi's machine doesn't play 4od with
HAL and flashplugin-nonfree. At

  https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2015/09/msg00444.html

there is

All the ones you mention plus hal-trinity. But so has my husband's computer.
He has only the one libflashplayer.so, the mozilla one.

I, on the other hand, have three:
   /home/lisi/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
   /usr/lib/flashplayer-mozilla/libflashplayer.so
   /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

The second line is ok but the third line should show

  /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flash-mozilla.so

as a symlink to /etc/alternatives/flash-mozilla.so.

I think libflashplayer.so in $HOME takes precedence over the alternatives
system. 'ls -l' might indicate which package provides it.

I need to try some time on a fresh install, Brian. For now, I still can't
watch 4oD on my TV with an attached Jessie computer, so that comes next.

But I have never not had HAL (Trinity before 14 requires it) so I have my
doubts.
