Since you haven't tried to get Channel 4 at all, it hasn't been your job for
even five minutes.

That is what I had consistently been saying.

Yes, I know. If you look I specifically mentioned two specific channels.
They are trying to stop people blocking adverts. The third channel paid for
by advertisements is fine on Google Chrome. And if I can get my television
to run catch-up on those two channels by running flashplayer-mozilla, however
illogical that may seem to you, I shall do so, however experienced in other
matters you may be and however much you may disapprove.

I would willingly do something else, but the only other thing that has been
suggested (elsewhere) is Pipelight, and that too has proved problematic.

And won't play Channel 4.

Nonetheless, flashplayer-mozilla works on my desktop and flashplugin-nonfree
doesn't. FOR THIS SPECIFIC CHANNEL.

That is completely irrelevant to my presented problem.

Are we sure, as Paul says, it is the same flashplayer? The plugin from
Adobe, which is what flashplugin-nonfree installs:

  brian@desktop:~$ ls -l libflashplayer.so
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 brian brian 17459332 Aug 7 19:50 libflashplayer.so

The plugin from flashplayer-mozilla:

  brian@desktop:~$ ls -l libflashplayer.so
  -rw-r--r-- 1 brian brian 17432460 Aug 11 18:14 libflashplayer.so

The md5sums are different too. Now, why is that and does it matter?
The respective packages are based on the same source.

  http://www.adobe.com/uk/software/flash/about/

identifies both plugins as the same version.

I am not claiming the file size difference implies different behaviour.

I would move the flashplayer-mozilla plugin in /usr/lib/mozilla out of
the way and substitute the flashplugin-nonfree one. What does that get
us for 4od and the iplayer?

Intriguing. Are the HAL packages installed?

All the ones you mention plus hal-trinity. But so has my husband's computer.
He has only the one libflashplayer.so, the mozilla one.

I, on the other hand, have three:
/home/lisi/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib/flashplayer-mozilla/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Plus two actually on my computer in some old files belonging to a client.

Reported in iceweasel thus:
 <quote>
 File: libflashplayer.so,libflashplayer.so,libflashplayer.so

Path: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so,/usr/lib/flashplayer-mozilla/libflashplayer.so,/home/lisi/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
    Version: 11.2.202.350
    State: Enabled (STATE_VULNERABLE_UPDATE_AVAILABLE)
    Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202
</quote>
And then a table.

My husband has:
<quote>
File: libflashplayer.so
Path: /usr/lib/flashplayer-mozilla/libflashplayer.so
Version: 11.2.202.508
State: Enabled
Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202
</quote>

So it should be his that is working and mine that is not!
We both have Iceweasel 40.0.3-3~bpo70+1, though they manage to look very
different.

Earlier in this saga, Peter had both flashplugin-nonfree and
flashplayer-mozilla, but as it didn't work I aptitude purged both, then
installed flashplayer-mozilla.

The problem on my husband's computer is that it complains that adblocker
software is installed and working, so won't play. It isn't. I have allowed
pop-ups, allowed cookies, cleared the cache. I am stuck!

So they are different versions. "All" I have to find out is how to get my
husband the same version....

I'll look at that in the morning.

But I feel that we are - I am - progressing!

Why not just copy the file from his to yours. But first delete all
those other ones, on your system. I put all my plugins in
~/.mozilla/plugins , and tell firefox where to find them in
the ~/.bashrc file as
MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH="/home/charlie/.mozilla/plugins"

I deleted the libflashplayer.so already on my husband's computer, and copied
the ones on my computer across, including creating directories where
necessary. about:plugins in Iceweasel now displays exactly the same on the
two computers. We have exactly the same version of Iceweasel:
40.0.3-3~bpo70+1.

Channel 4 catchup programmes, which play on mine, will still not play on his.
It still says that an ad blocker is turned on, and I must turn it off. :-(

Something must be different, and I have just got to find out what. If/when I
crack it, I shall obviously share it.

Isn't it more about plugins or even some standalone program you have
running? A look at 'ps ax' is worth it. Running Iceweasel from a new,
different account might narrow it down.

I do that as a matter of course for security reasons. It does lead
to one wrinkle, though. Pulse audio won't let both users play sound
at the same time so one or other (flash on the browser, me running
xmms under my own account) stalls. I don't know if this could be
relevant to Lisi.

I've yet to investigate the snags in running pulse audio at a system
level rather than as a user.

Cheers,
David.

Ironically, on my computer, which is running Channel 4 fine, I have pop-ups
blocked, tracking blocked, some history blocked, but I am allowing cookies.

It isn't sound I am having problems with at this moment, David. ;-)

On the two boxen I am running the same version of Iceweasel, on the same
version of the same desktop, on the same version of the same OS, and it is
very different, with different settings available. I'll have try setting up
a new user and see what transpires.

Before a new user, I'd recommend trying just a new Firefox profile:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

You can use this to run multiple profiles for different purposes, and I
_think_ that when combined with -no-remote, you can also use it to run
multiple Firefox instances in parallel using different profiles. (I
can't swear to that at the moment, though.)

FWIW, on jessie, I have 2 distinct instances of iceweasel that can play
youtube videos concurrently (not that I'd want to do that).
pulseaudio settings are default.

And yes, a fresh iceweasel profile will clear out any legacy settings
that could be getting in your way.

Good luck!

Thank you, Jimmy, Brian, The Wanderer and Ralph. These last pointers were the
final answer. I have lift-off. Ad-blocker was running on my husband's
computer, even though it hadn't been on mine, I had just been unable to find
it. I still haven't been able to uninstall it, but I have successfully
disabled it.

I now have it running without a problem.

So that is the two Wheezy computers successfully dealt with. All I have to do
now is deal with the Jessie computer that is attached to the TV.

Again, that you all very much.

The correct place is:
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so
It's important to remove the other ones.

Your husband has the correct version for Iceweasel. You are using an old
version.

But it's better to use Chromium, it has version 18.0.0.209.

Paul, I am trying to do something specific that you are completely ignoring.
I am certainly not going to touch anything at all on the computer that is
working. And Chromium DOES NOR WORK WITH CHANNEL 4.
