Not sure what this is for a package, but in Debian you have
"flashplugin-nonfree" in contrib what downloads and installs the
flashplugin for Mozilla.

For Chromium there is "pepperflashplugin-nonfree".

deb-multimedia in your sources.list can give conflicts, better do not
use it.

You can update the flashplugins with these commands:
update-flashplugin-nonfree --install
update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree --install

Better make a daily cronjob to do this, because there are much problems
with flash. I have removed it from my machine.

With regards,

Neither of these works with British 4oD or Channel 5.

Great advice if you are using your computer as an ornament or for something
for which you don't need deb-multimedia. Less good if you have a purpose for
your computer and that purpose can only be fulfilled with deb-multimedia.

I was so desperate I was wondering why I didn't just buy Windows. ;-)
deb-multimedia is a small sacrifice compared to that.

But I still haven't got it going on the computer that is attached to the TV,
and I don't actually want it on my desktop. And it doesn't work on my
husband's desktop.

Lisi if you are asking? I can tell you 'flashplayer-mozilla' works
without the problems that 'flashplayer-nonfree' has, So if you are
having problems watching internet video you should give
flashplayer-mozilla a try.

Which problems has flashplayer-nonfree?

The only thing you need to do, is to update it. I use a crontab for
that. Something like this and it works for both Iceweasel and Cromium:

cd /etc/cron.d/
sudo wget http://vandervlis.nl/files/flash-update

This tries to update flash every day at 12:00.
No problem when no flashplugins are found.

With regards,

Channel 4oD and channel 5 refuse to play.

I'm so glad that you don't have problems. That doesn't help me, and others I
know, watch the programs I want to watch on my TV.

You have signed in successfully. Please describe what happens and what
you see on the screen when you try to watch a programme.

No problem with 4od here on two machines.

All three boxen are different.
One just plays. With flashplayer-mozilla.
One I see an eternally turning white circle.
One starts to play and then stops and refuses to go any further until I turn
adblock off. I have no adblock. I have even installed adblock so that I
could turn it off. When that didn't work I uninstalled it again.

On the Jessie machine, I installed Pipelight. I was wading through seeing
whether I could do anything about the dependencies that are suggested as
potential problems, when flashplayer-mozilla was suggested, so I tried it.

So that's three I know work. One of mine and two of yours. And I do in fact
know of one or two others. If you are saying that you have solved the
problem, consistently, and you are very good at solving problems, in view of
the number of people who struggle with this, it would be charitable to post
your solution somewhere on line.

I have no explanations for the first and third experiences but can
reproduce the second one if I don't do what is described below.

I've just did a completely new installation of flashplugin-nonfree on a
machine which had never seen it. Your eternally turning white circle is
what I get. My feeling is that this has something to do with protected
video on 4od.

  https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html

Installing hal, hal-info, libhal1 and libhal1-storage cures it for me
but you seem to have a more diverse set of issues.

For some reason which I cannot remember I got the debs from a Ubuntu
PPA. Maybe the Wheezy ones didn't work for me.

Bingo! Of course. That is exactly it. But since it sometimes works, I am
persevering in trying to get it working. Channel 4 say that it sometimes
works on Linux!! If I can find out *why* it sometimes works and sometimes
doesn't, I could be home and dry.

The second two are what almost everyone else I know gets. Jimmy's suggestion
and its working on my desktop was a revelation.

I am convinced the HAL packages are required for flash with 4od, if only
because the only machine I do not have them on doesn't play programmes.

I cannot see what flashplayer-mozilla brings to the party that is not
contained in flashplugin-nonfree. Both have libflashplayer, which is
the essential library needed, and both are up-to-date. After that, it
is window dressing.

Sorry - I should have said. I shall check for those. I definitely have HAL,
and shall check for the others.

I used to have HAL on lenny and squeeze. When I first upgraded wheezy
on my laptop, it wouldn't come back up when the lid was reopened.
Removing HAL (deprecated in favour of udev) fixed it. I can't see hal
in jessie but it is in sid. Is that because there's a fresh
incarnation, or is it just a survivalist?

Cheers,
David.

My understanding is that HAL has gone from Debian, never to return. The
sid package is for the unofficial m68k port only.

I just did a new installation of Wheezy, installed just HAL, and installed
flashplugin-nonfree. 4oD is working. Whether usably remains to be seen,
because it is running on a rather old and slow machine.

This week I am going to try this (install Wheezy, install HAL, install
flashplugin-nonfree) on my TV machine, and will again report back. Provided
that I can find a no-rugby day. I can't put the machine out of action on a
rugby day.

One of the things I noticed was that the flashplayer was present in
Wheezy and Stretch when Jessie became stable. For whatever reason,
Jessie Stable is missing the file. Pinning the player from Stretch
works, though.

Thanks, Jimmy. I tried it immediately, and it works without a problem on my
desktop. (Which isn't where I want it. Murphy's law.)

It doesn't work on my husband's desktop. I haven't yet done the
trouble-shooting.

And I really want it on my TV, but I have to edit the sources list.

I cannot recieve that here I expect, and I have no URL. So I cannot test
it, but I think you are wrong.

flashplugin-nonfree and pepperflashplugin-nonfree are installing the
original plugins from Adobe and Google.

For what do you need it? Everything is in Debian itself.

The only thing I know, is that it's useable for libdvdcss2.
But you can play most DVD's without libdvdcss2.

What kind of special things are you doing with your computer?

I am a sysadmin and I help many people with Debian computers.
Nobody needs deb-multimedia.

How can you possibly have a valid opinion when you can't test it? It is you
who are wrong. Everyone here, who can in theory get it, has problems on
Linux, which the channel acknowledges.

Even flashplayer-mozilla is still not working on my husband's desktop.

It's my job for the last 15 years.

Ah, so it has nothing to do with the choice between flashplayer-mozilla
and flashplugin-nonfree? That was my opinion about.

Yes, a channel can implement flash in such a bad way, that it's not
possible to look at it normally for Linux users.

E.g. here: http://www.ookjij.nl/
But this works: http://www.ookjij.nl/index_win.html

> Even flashplayer-mozilla is still not working on my husband's desktop.

flashplayer-mozilla will install the same flashplayer as
flashplugin-nonfree. But there is a big difference between the
flashplayer what't installed in Chromium. Chromium is better in flash.

For security reasons I don't use flash anymore on my work-computer.
What I see there, is that really many sites use HTML5 when there is no
flash available. I think this is because of tablet-computers. On tablets
is no flash available.

With regards,
Paul van der Vlis.
