Hi!
How can I test memory of the graphics card?
How can I test other features of the graphics card?
Is there free software for this purpose?

The menu texts in the "Blender" software are not readable. Sometimes
the system freezes while watching a video.

Serkan,

I am assuming that this Nvidia video card is in a laptop?

Is your GUI using Wayland? If it is, for testing purposes, I recommend switching back to X11.

You may have a hardware fault?

Hoping that you do not have a hardware fault, I would recommend installing Nvidia proprietary drivers.

I would install and then run nvidia-detect and install the nvidia drivers it recommends.
# apt install nvidia-detect
# nvidia-detect
# apt install [package recommended by nvidia-detect]

If these drivers causes issues you should be able to remove the nvidia drivers by
# apt purge nvidia*

This Debian Wiki explains Nvidia proprietary driver installation better than I can:
https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

For testing Nvidia drivers I like to use glmark2
# apt install glmark2

If your GUI is using Wayland, then also install glmark2-wayland
# apt install glmark2 glmark2-wayland

$ glmark2
or
$ glmark2-wayland      (for Wayland systems)

Hope this helps.

George.

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I get a message like this.

"Your card is only supported by the 340 legacy drivers series, which
is only available up to buster."

For such old hardware you're probably better off *not* using the
proprietary driver.

Or graphics intensive software like blender. Their homepage mentions
that OpenGL 4.3 is required[1], but the GeForce 8600M GS only supports
OpenGL 3.3.

Try this, as decribed here:

WARNING! Pay attention, to install nothing else as described here and the needed dependencies
called from this two packages.

# apt update
# apt install nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver firmware-misc-nonfree

Do NOT update any other packages, even if aptitude is suggesting it. Most people in the past
believe, they must upgrade other packages, too.
This is NOT necessaryand break your system!

I suggest to install these two packages and theire dependencies, and remove the entres from
sid and testing back to "stable".

You can then try to build the 340xx packages (I am using module-assistant for it). If it builds,
you are lucky, then it will work, too.

Please note: If you got an Intel cpu with inbuild GPU, then you might need "bumblebee" or
"primusrun" for it, to activate the external NVidia GPU and deactivate the Intel GPU.

Note: In rare cases, you can also use the 390xx driver, but the 86M from Nvidia should work
with the 340xx.

The problem is NOT the module itself, the problem is the compiling. If the compile works, the
driver will work!

The reason is, that since 340xx in debian, the compiler was changed somehow by the
devolpers, so mostly the build fails. I suppose, they fixed it in sid.

Good luck!

Hans

You have posted this recipe several times. Instead of adding WARNINGS,
read how to use apt pinning and update your guide.

An earlier example:

Have you trying to find more info related to firmware files mentioned in
error messages? They may be necessary, however in some cases drivers
tries to load firmware that is available through public channels. In
some cases firmware can not be included in .deb packages due to
licensing issues, but when desperately needed, can be extracted from
proprietary drivers downloaded from vendor sites.

My experience is that freezes due to graphics card drivers might happen
for any vendor. Specifically to nvidia, several years ago I switched
back and forth between nouveau and proprietary drivers, patching the
latter for up to date kernels, due to some artefact in both cases.

It seems the message, I am replying to, was rejected by the mailing list

Instead of dmesg I recommend "journalctl" as root, perhaps with "-b"
(and maybe more) option. Log entries from various applications may be
helpful.

Sven Joachim. Tue, 31 Dec 2024 20:09:09 +0100.

Lookup for these messages in the nouveau bug tracker and discussion
groups. You may try kernel and graphics stack packages from the Debian
backports repository. If issues have not fixed yet, alternatives may be:
- Buy another graphics card that is better supported by Linux drivers.
(Sorry, I can not suggest anything specific.)
- If the developers do not mind to improve support of your device and
your a ready to compile custom kernels, mesa, and some other packages
then you may file a bug.
