Your Asus machine represents "all of your eggs in one basket". You need
more computers. A storage server would be a useful addition to your
network:

Wow! Gene is implementing one of my suggestions! I am flattered! :-)

Please post a photograph online somewhere when it is built. I am
curious to see your custom/ mod/ 3-D printed case.

Just the shelves are printed, you can get the case from amazon as a
stamped sheet metal thing for just  few bucks. It will look like h---
because the 7 port all usb_3 hub is longer that it is.  A 6" 24 volt fan
idling along on the bpi's 5 volts will cool it quietly. I'll probably
tie the hub to it with a zip tie or 2. Function is what counts. Pretty
is for describing girls.

A test just now:

Installing using the standard installer:

In order to get speech output, you have to specifically select

Install with speech installer which then uses espeak voice for the install

Installing using the expert text installer:

The step which would install a Braille keyboard is skipped unless a Braille
keyboard is found.

An install of XFCE *does* include Orca but it's not enabled unless you
explicitly enable Accessibility tools and enable speech and screen reader
support

I do not understand what Gene may have done at some point but I've just
stepped through a couple of installs and there's no *obvious* way to
get Orca producing speech indefinitely

Who knows how Gene did this except Gene himself.

All best, as ever,

Andy

I do not remember if I explicitly chose some installer menu to save

      /var/log/installer/hardware-summary

So Gene's install logs might shed some light on what actually happened.

I am interested in some equivalent of

      lsusb -vt
      ls /dev/tty*

executed from installer console or immediately after first reboot. I
suspect Gene may forget to disconnect some USB hub plugged into other
side of the box.

that is quite lengthy, 75+ kilobytes, what would I be looking for?

AIR the only thing plugged in at last install, was the button for a
logitek k360 keyboard and a 325 mouse, one button did both.

quite lengthy today, nearly 2 screens full and has 2 serial convertors,
one a fdti for heyu's cm-11a and a ch340 in my big brother color inkjet,
but they were all unplugged at install, only the  single button for
keyboard & mouse was plugged in.  That printer also has a cat5 input and
an ipv4 address, which is also hooked up but usb is hugely, obviously
much faster..  Part of the slow is that the last time I tcpdumped it,
the driver sent a bogus checksum the first 6 times before it sent a good
checksum. May have been fixed since as the driver has been refreshed
several times to keep up with cups changes since. Its getting old and
its huge, can use tabloid sized paper even, does stunning work on good
color paper.

ditto

Nothing is plugged into front, don't think the only front port usb is
even in the machine as it was the original speed stuff., so all usb i/o
is out of the rear and at least usb2. No, even the floppy slot is just a
full height hole in the front panel. The side isn't on the machine, the
i5 heat sink and fan are too tall, side won't fit.

There is also, because I have an old Sony digital Handi-Cam, a semi
hi-def hi8 camera, a firewire card, bought before apple killed it with
their exorbitant license demand. Replacements if it should fail are made
out of pure unobtainium today. I use kino to edit its output when I
shoot a wedding etc.  Could that be miss-interpreted as a serial device?

Merry Christmas everybody.

The hypothesis you agreed with (several times) is that the *installer*
enables assistive technologies when it sees ftdi or a similar device. So
the subject of my interest is state of hardware namely during install,
not today. I suspect you forgot to disconnect some cable that time.

>> ls /dev/tty*

Do you see anything related to ttyUSB or ftdi in /var/log/installer/syslog?

Was screen reader active during install or it revealed itself later?

I don't know if this is a kernel that you built for yourself: current version
should be somewhere closer to 6.1.0-28-amd64

As mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I think this was first mentioned
some five years ago - https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2019/05/msg01001.htmlat which point you are agreeing that this is a possibility and telling Curt

In the absence of a reinstall at any point, I might suggest that we
kill this topic once and for all and leave it as not able to be solved?

Have you actually ever reported a bug against debian-installer for this
behaviour though? I'm guessing they would first ask for the install log
that it writes into root's home directory.

If you have, can you tell us the bug number?

If you haven't, I think you should. Perhaps phrase it as "I don't
understand why assistive technologies are enabled on every install I do,
can you tell me please?"

Thanks,
Andy

The cloud scares me, too public. Some of what I have done is patentable
& I'd rather not share it.  Like an NTSC time code format linked to what
is now NTP.  Not patentable, but my fingerprints have been to the bottom
of the mohole, 37,000 ft deep in the pacific, I was the bench tech that
built the tv cameras on the Trieste that went down there in 1960.

Its been a long winding road to get this far, and one hell of a ride.
I'd do it all again.

Quoth the Wikipedia

"In August 2022, Code42 announced that it had sold the CrashPlan
side of its business to New York-based private equity firm Mill
Point Capital to focus exclusively on the cybersecurity market.
Mill Point Capital purchased CrashPlan for $250 million" [1]

I'd steer clear of anything run by a private equity. Much more so by
something where you'll realize too late it's become a hollow hull
(security, backups, etc). My hunch is they're just stripping assets,
as private equities do.

But, of course, in this world, everyone takes their risks :-)

Cheers

What happened to CrashPlan though? I have a vague memory of running it
for free, doing backups to a non-profit "cloud", in fact a computer
club's server. Wasn't called cloud back then...

But now CrashPlan is payware? And monthly payments too?
