Hi!

We've had issues for the last couple of days regarding installing Erling
via apt. I can run apt update with all of our other repos, but when I add
the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/erlang_solutions_repo.list , and the run
sudo apt update, I get this error:

I have triple checked ownership of files, tried to run apt-get clean, etc
etc, nothing works. The exact same setup (Ubuntu 20.04) worked on the 11th
of November.

Has something on your side changed since then?

Kind regards,

This looks very much like a packaging problem on erlang-solutions.com's side.
So I'd first check with them (reading between the lines, something seems to
try creating a symlink of a nameless file to a nameless place, but that's just
a guess).

As a second, you seem to be using Ubuntu's version of apt, so if you suspect
that, I'd recommend asking Ubuntu for that.

Cheers

As the OP's link explicitly referenced "debian" I used Synaptic's search
function. There were no packages with "Erling" in package name, but
several in description field.

I then tried to visit https://www.erlang-solutions.com/ .
I received the message:

Cloudfare's non-informative message was:

I'm guessing Erling is a typo for Erlang, an excellent concurrent, real time,
distributed functional programming language.

*MY* reference to "Erling" *IS* a typo. I did the tests with "Erlang".
I used copy-n-paste in tests 'cause I'm a licy tipist ;}

     apt list '~nerlang'

gives more than 100 package names.
<https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=bookworm&searchon=names&keywords=erlang>
adds a warning that not all packages are listed due to excessive number.

I do not use synaptic, so I have no idea if it is possible to break
search by changing its settings. I would start from inspection of apt
sources

     apt policy

Something I forgot to mention earlier, for anyone who does use
Synaptic. There is an additional search available, using Xapian. The
package is apt-xapian-index, I find it more useful than the built-in
search function.

For some reason which I never understood, the maintainers of erlang chose
several years ago to split-up their standard runtime libraries into many
separate installable packages. I thought it was not a good idea and I never
heard what their rationale was. Since then I build erlang from source
rather than use them.

You probably should direct your question to either an Ubuntu forum, or
through whatever support channel erlang-solutions.com suggests.

While Debian and Ubuntu are similar in some respects (for example by
using the same package management tools, modulo exact versions), it's
always better to ask people who are likely familiar with what you are
running.

I do hope you find an answer to your question, but debian-user is not
the correct place to ask questions about installation of third-party
packages on Ubuntu.

I found debian 12 has much difference than ubuntu.
for example, mysql in debian 12 is not a default apt package, but in
ubuntu 22 it is.
and, as my last thread shows, debian 12 has no plain text logs by
default.
also the snap way is different than ubuntu.

Just my limited experience.
Thanks.
