#266348 — I've an editable .pdf form I need to fill out

Message-ID<HYyIN-4vM5-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
I'm trying to get our states Attorney General to exert some influence
over a cell phone bill I don't owe. The AG has sent me a form letter PDF
with fill in the blanks for all the info.

Do we have an editor in our arsenal that can do that to a pdf?

Thanks all.

Cheers, Gene Heskett.

Atril Document Viewer works for me.

I have it installed, but while the display gui looks like an editor,
nothing happens when I type something or click on a checkbox. My
handwriting is pretty bad so I'd much rather be able to type my answers
to the many questions presented, typing into the supplied blank spaces.

Am I doing something and the edit functions are disabled?

If the fields are technically a form, evince can fill them out.
If not, you can use Libreoffice, but format might break.

I had it "annotate" my name on the appropriate page, left an icon there,
then printed that page as a test, printout was blank. No help from the
help button. Have we something that actually works?

> If not, you can use Libreoffice, but format might break.

That, sent to writer, redirected the pdf to draw and refused to go to
the next pages. Tried it twice, got draw twice, did find the correct
page, under a navigate pulldown but while it did take clicks like it was
marking some, the location marked was half a page from the click
location. I quite w/o saving.

Thanks.

Have you tried firefox built-in PDF viewer and okular?

To add a "handwritten" signature I used xournal.

If the PDF is editable (has the option to fill out the blanks), I use often chromium.

> Do we have an editor in our arsenal that can do that to a pdf?

I bought Master PDF Editor, but even the commercial Qoppa looks quiet interesting.

My experience is, I can use MasterPDF Editor on two machines (i.e. Desktop and Laptop), which is a requirement for me. Some times I need to reinstall the Debian Packages again, because it "forgets" its license or has issues with Qt5 - so I kept the original Debian Packages, as I didn't want to buy it again. I'm using Master PDF Editor on Debian now over various Debian versions, and over various machines since several years. Not renewing the lincese means only that I'm kept away from the latest features, but not from the original progam.

Best regards,
	Klaus.

My understanding of the nature of chromium, is that it retrieves all the
data that is input to chromium, and onsells it.

chroming is dangerous.

Did you notice, that I was talking about the reduced, crippled OpenSource browser: chromium, which is based on chrome. But I was not talking about the chrome itself.

AFAIK are these Google related parts removed in chromium; at least they were several years ago.

Best regards,
	Klaus.

Properietary parts are missing, which require a fee to ship, like Widevine.

In the past I couldn't watch Video on Demand with chromium, whereas chrome was capable. Currently I don't watch any more, can't say much about current situation.

Port 80 has been hijacked. You cannot send it to monitor your own web
page at http://localhost:80, but the result is a 403 because google
doesn't know WTH to do with localhost, yet it can call home with
everything.

sudo apt purge it, firefox-esr or the nightly snap (on armbian) still
works fine.

Cheers, Gene Heskett.

I just tried that. No hijacking: works fine.

It was also true here using the file:// prefix, trying look at the html
versions of the man pages in /usr/share/local/docs. Firefox-esr can use
that syntax just fine.

Where the difference be?

Cheers, Gene Heskett.

The difference, Gene, is in something YOU did. It works for everyone
else.

/usr/share may be unavailable inside snap or flatpack sandboxes, so it
is expected. Even /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf may
differ in the mount namespace created for chromium. It might be
necessary to use a tool like nsenter to inspect runtime environment of
the process.

nsenter? Never heard of it before, but I have the man page so I'll
certainly study it, thank you Max for making me aware of it.

Why would that cause a permissions (403) error?

I don't understand why a file:// prefix would test whether port 80 worked.
Port 80 is for http:// isn't it?

Which syntax, the one in your previous sentence or the one in your
previous post?

> Where the difference be?

Between what and what? You never seem to quote what you actually
put in the address bar together with what the outcome was.

Cheers,
David.
