I suspect the GPU is suspect because there are small blocks of pixels appearing where they aren't wanted. I'd like to re-install the OS as I've got copies of everything I think. Just to see if it's maybe a driver issue. Thing is I can't get the f12 options screen of the PC to let me boot from a CD in this EFI mode what's grub done. How can I boot from CD in this EFI mode? mick

When you power up the computer, there should be a hot key to enter the System Setup utility (or whatever it is called on your computer). Press it. Then find whatever screen(s) are used to enable boot device(s). You may need to create an entry for the optical drive and/or enable booting from the optical drive. David

You try other keys besides F12. You tap them repeatedly after turning on. You try them in combination with Escape. There are usually a number of features on different keys, like: F1 System Information F2 System Diagnostics F7 HP SpareKey F9 Boot Device Options F10 BIOS Setup F11 System Recovery Cheers, David.

If you have another Debian machine somewhere, use dd to write a netinst.iso to a USB stick and boot from that? Many old machines respond to DEL key tapped repeatedly on first booting up F1 / F5 / F7 are all possibles: F12 is usually for a one time boot You may need to set priority order for BIOS/MBR/Legacy and UEFI boot order separately. > > F1 System Information > F2 System Diagnostics > F7 HP SpareKey > F9 Boot Device Options > F10 BIOS Setup > F11 System Recovery > > Cheers, > David. > All best, as ever, Andy

BootOrder says that CD should be tried first. Do you have something like "Fast Boot" option in firmware settings (earlier called BIOS)? If so I suggest to disable it. Check that boot from CD is enabled there. If the timeout setting is respected by firmware, you may try to increase it to e.g. 10 seconds. Likely 1 second is not enough to spin up CD. I have no experience with Dell and I am not aware that some kind of idiosyncrasy that has to be taken into account.

Since this is a system folder, the operation must be conducted as "root". For example, if the ISO is located in the user's Downloads folder, the command would be: sudo mv ~/Downloads/<filename.iso> /boot/grml/ Update GRUB sudo update-grub (If I'm understanding everything correctly, this is the non-hacker way.)

Upon further research I realize that this is apparently not the case. I guess the key word is "rescue." How about Ventoy (mentioned here I think by Dan Ritter once) on a usb stick? But then I think I've forgotten already the problem we're trying to solve. --

Taken into account current size of netinst, I see not point in avoiding
